8. Rock Me

Kate’s POV

I woke up on that beautiful Monday morning and looked at the bed under mine.  Tess was asleep, her eyes peacefully shut like an angel that was resting on clouds.  I was so afraid of waking her up.  I climbed down and brushed my hair.  I didn’t bother to change because I was already in ripped jeans and a torn t-shirt.  Tess woke up afterwards herself, looking as beautiful as ever as she changed into another stylish outfit.  I almost felt bad when we walked through the halls past her ex-boyfriends who’d look at her in awe, thinking, “Why did I ever let her go?”  Tess walked out with her back up straight and her shoulders parallel to each other.  She could be a model in the future. There was a lot of things I could see in her future.  Harry waved sweetly to her and she waved back, but her expression was blank. She had a rough night, hearing Haylor’s breakup.  She went on about how Harry nearly destroyed Taylor’s heart.  She didn’t even feel like walking out today, but she had to.  She spoke sweetly to the members in her group, even the stubborn girls who envied us.  Hazel was also very obedient today, her hair was slick back in a tight ponytail with only her bangs hanging.  Her lips were bit into a straight white line and she barely spoke.  The world was different today.  I didn’t like it at all.  Even the cool ocean breeze didn’t soothe me.  Tess seemed as though someone destroyed her happy side, Hazel seemed like someone killed her sister, and Irene was quiet, dangerously quiet.  The activities went by slowly today.  It was so gloomy, that even my teammates weren’t smiling.  It was like a storm cloud hit us.  The campfire was also low, the waves barely crashing on the rocks.  Everyone was in a bad mood today.  Tess headed back to the cabin and I sat alone on the pier, dangling my feet into the ocean.  I heard footsteps behind me and a shadowy figure sat next to me.  His voice was very deep, “What are you doing out here?”  I answered, “I’m relaxing and thinking.”  He asked, “About what?”  I turned to see who it was, “Tess.”  I could see his curls sticking out and I knew it was Harry.  He replied, “There’s something to think about.  Beautiful, amazing, sensitive-” I interrupted, “Easily heart-broken.”  There was a moment of silence between us.  “What do you mean?”  I answered sternly, “She just doesn’t want to talk to you after what you did to Taylor.  She cares about other’s feelings much more than her own.  And she thinks you might treat her the same way.”  I felt like I was trying to argue with him.  He defended, “Taylor is different.  Tess is amazing. She’s kind, she understands much more.  You don’t understand, Taylor was using me as a back-up boyfriend.  It doesn’t feel nice to be used.” I softened, “I know. I’ve been there. But I’m not the one who doesn’t understand. It’s Tess.”  He sighed and dangled his feet next to mine, “You know, you’re a good friend.”  I looked at the sparkling water, “I know I am.  But what are you?  Tess thinks of herself as a summer fling. Tell me that isn’t true.”  He didn’t answer. “TELL ME.”  He nodded, “It isn’t. I know this is love. I just know it. And I’m going to show her that we will last.”  I took off my shirt and jeans and put them next to my shoes.  (Don’t worry I was wearing a bikini underneath) Harry yelled, “Don’t-” Before he could finish, I plunged into the water and his words were muffled to me.  The water was still and the seaweed on the bottom was just floating, not swaying.  A school of fish swam by me and I swam to the top for some air. I shook my head, shooting water everywhere.  Harry laughed and rubbed his arms, “It’s pretty cold, should we head back?” I shook my head again, “One more dip.”  I dived into the water a picked up a shell at the sandy floor. I swam back up and pulled myself back onto the pier.  I turned to Harry, who was trying to scoot away from my wet body. I handed him the shell and wrapped myself with a towel.  I put on my shoes and grabbed my clothes.  Harry wrapped his arm around me, rubbing my shoulder.  Both of us got hot chocolate and headed back to the cabin.  Niall walked out of the cabin, “Hey, mate. I just-” His eyes widened when he saw Harry’s arm around me. I quickly shook it off, “Niall, it’s not what you think.”  He turned around and walked calmly to his cabin.  He was furious. I just can’t. First, my best friend, now, the guy I’m supposedly in love with.  This is such a sickening world.  I ran back into my cabin and shut the door before Harry tried to make things better by talking.  I slammed the door and leaned against it.  I slowly lowered and I was on the floor, crying.

Tess’ POV

My eyes were shut when I heard the slam of the door and the tears of my dear friend.  I rubbed my eyes and climbed out of bed to see what had happened.  I looked at her and she looked so different.  There were black circles around her eyes, her eyes were red, and she was crying blood.  Wait.  SHE WAS CRYING BLOOD!!!!  She looked up, “What’s wrong with your face, Tess? What are you looking at.”  My face was frozen, probably horrific.  She looked down at her hands, “Why are my hands red?!?” She started crying again.  I screamed at the top of my lungs.  All the lights in all the cabins flickering on.  The boys next door rushed to see what had happened.  Niall was the most helpful.  He actually DID something.  The other guys stood there in horror.  He picked her up with a worried look on his face.  He cradled her in his arms and she cried into his shirt.  He didn’t even mind the blood staining his shirt. He kissed her cheek and told her everything was alright.  She calmed and when she went to the nurse, she had to take pills.  When she came back in the morning with Niall, I was relieved.  One, she was with someone who cared about her. Two, she was safe. Three, she’s back to normal.  Niall was still carrying her because she said she was a bit drowsy still.  The nurse gave her a bag of pills she had to take for the rest of the month.  She would lie in bed and complain about all the things she couldn’t do.  And I would just smile because that was just like Kate and that meant I had my best friend back.
