Fragile *Complete*

When Alex set out to find her long lost brother, she never guessed he'd be famous. But can she get him to remember her, that tiny blank in his childhood memory? Or will his life prove too much of a distraction?

12. Memories

Zayn's POV

She looked around the room at all of us, clearly confused. "You don't remember any of us," Liam asked after he regained his composure.

"No." She looked over at Louis and he quickly scrambled out of her bed, falling over in the process, his arms flailing. "Oh my gosh! Are you okay," she shouted, not understanding. We all laughed. He MEANT to do that, trying to ease the tension, just like him too. "No sorry," she said, turning back to Liam. "Although, YOU look REALLY familiar," she said, looking at Louis.

"What DO you remember, Love," Louis asked, standing up and sitting on the far edge of her bed.

"Well, um," she looked around the room and her eyes landed on something. "I remember that." She pointed at an old crack in the wall. "I remember walking back to my room after Tommy didn't remember me and sitting on my bed and staring at THAT crack, and everything after that is a blur." Alex buried her face in her hands.

Louis walked over and sat down next her, rubbing her back. "It's alright, you'll remember," he cooed. "We're your friends. I'm Louis," he said , placing his hand in his chest. "That's Zayn, that's Liam, that's Harry, and that's Niall." He gestures to each of us as he introduced us to her.

I leaned over to Liam and whispered, "Who's Tommy? I thought Louis was her brother?"

"I guess it was her nickname for him," her replied, but it sounded more like a question.

"Who's Tommy?" Niall looked just as confused as I felt.

"My brother. That's my nickname for him," he explained. So Liam was right.

A nurse came in a few minutes later. "Hello Dear, how are you today?"

"Um, fine I guess." Alex sounded unsure.

"She doesn't remember anything," Harry calmly told the nurse.

"I remember SOME stuff," Alex defended. "I remember everything up until," she looked at Liam.

"Fifteen years ago," he finished for her.

"Alright, I'm going to do a few tests to see if we can't figure out what's wrong." She called a few other nurses and they wheeled her out of her room for an CAT Scan. I laid my head back on the wall to wait.

"Zayn. Zayn, c'mon, wake up." I opened my eyes. Harry was standing over me. I looked around the room to see that the boys were gone before returning my gaze to Harry. "You fell asleep man. C'mon, everybody's in Alex's room." I stood up and followed Harry to Alex's room. The nurse was standing next to her, apparently waiting for us. Alex watched us walk in, never taking her eyes off of one of us five guys.

"Well," the nurse started, "there's nothing wrong with Alex's brain. We believe that it has shut itself off from any painful or traumatic memories, which seem to have begun fifteen years ago, hence her memory only going up to that point." What? What was so bad that Alex had decided to forget everything?

"Will she ever remember," asked Louis. I could tell how worried he was.

"The only way she'll remember is if she decides to. Once her brain has fully accepted everything that has happened to her. If it is too traumatic, there is a chance she will forever repress those memories." The nurse had an apologetic expression on her face. I couldn't take much more of this. She had to remember. She just had to!

"Is there anything we can do to jog her memory," I asked, trying to keep my voice calm.

"Just take her home and treat her normally; as if nothing has happened. Surround her with familiarity an hope for the best. You can take her home whenever she's ready." She walked out, leaving us alone.

"Well," Louis turned to face Alex, "would you like to come home?"

"S-sure, I guess."

"Here, we'll be back in a couple of minutes." Liam handed Alex her clothes and lead the way out.

When we were out in the waiting room, we all faced each other. All that is, except Louis. "Louis." I put my hand on his shoulder and tried to turn him around. I tried again. "Louis, what's wrong?"

He turned around and we saw tears streaming down his face. "She can't have forgotten. I-I, I think, ugh, nevermind." He shook his head and slumped down in one of the chairs.

"What is it, Lou," asked Niall, sitting down and patting his shoulder.

"I think she's my sister." He groaned again and put his head in his hand.

The boys and I looked at each other. He remembers?
