9. Chapter 9

*Dedicated to Duckies who gave me a few ideas for this chapter*

English drags by slowly as I sit between two girls that I met last year; Penny and Nicole. They're twin sisters who have similar powers. Penny is a Noise Mimicker and Nicole is a Visual Mimicker. Basically, anything they see or hear, they can reproduce almost perfectly. Penny can be really annoying but also extremely handy when it comes to pranks.

Last year, a boy in the year above convinced her to mimic the fire bell at one in the morning. Everyone evacuated the school and then the boy and his friends filled the main area with foam. It was so funny. Shame the boys were then excluded for half the year. Penny was just given a detention for three months.

When break rolls around, I meet up with Jade and Charlie in the garden between the main mansion and the sports one. I happily greet them as I sit down on the edge of the bench beside Jade.

"Where's Ollie then?" I ask them, kicking a small pebble across the gravel path from where I'm sat.

"I think he's got his detention with Miss Kandy." Charlie explains. I nod in understanding and we spend the rest of break chatting - mostly making fun and jokes about Oliver.

When the end bell rings, I link arms with Jade and together we skip to Maths. We settle down in seats at the back of the room and wait for our teacher, Mr Cooper. We begin a conversation about upcoming events such as the Mystique Ball when our teacher enters the room.

"Hello students." Mr Cooper greets as he sets his laptop bag by the bottom of his desk and places a stack of worksheets on top of the wood. "Today, we're going to study... Trigonometry!" The class lets out a groan in sync. "Hey!" Mr Cooper snaps. "We have to learn it."

Mr Cooper points to the pile of worksheets and clicks his fingers. The sheets dematerialize from the desk and appear on the desk in front of us. I stare down at the mass of triangles, numbers and letters. I groan loudly in my head before grabbing my pencil and leaning over my desk to lean on my free hand.

"Right, I want you to complete all the questions on the sheet in the next thirty minutes, okay? Ready? Go!" Mr Cooper sits in his computer chair and pulls his laptop out. I look down at the questions in front of my and begin writing, scratching away at the paper.

After 20 minutes, I'm finished. All the questions have an answer that I'm pretty sure is right. I raise my hand to gain Mr Cooper's attention. His gaze never leaves the screen of his laptop. Technically, in class we're not supposed to use our powers but I don't really care.

Hi Mr Cooper. It's me, Sally. I'm finished my work. What will I do now? Oh and you can reply by thinking if you want.

Mr Cooper looks up and straight at me.

Sally, that's a detention.

A smug look sits on his face and I shrug.

Still doesn't give me something to do, does it?

Mr Cooper sighs and rises to his feet. He walks towards me and reaches down for my paper when the fire bell rings loud and clear like a Siren singing to sailors on their ships.

"Right, You all know the drill. Outside and find your Private Tutors." Mr Cooper reports to us. I stand up and grab my bag, everyone else does the same. I look to Jade and by the look on her face, I know she's thinking something.

Hey Sally. Remember what happened last time their was a fire?

I nod to her as we exit the classroom. By now, all the classroom's occupants are slowly filing out, leaving the premises.

The last time there was a fire was last year, during the last term before the holidays. We were hanging out in our dorm room, waiting for Oliver and Charlie who were planning on sneaking into our room. As they climbed onto the window ledge, the alarm went off and it gave them such a shock that they fell from off the ledge. On the way down, Oliver's trousers got caught on a bit of piping and when he was pulled to a halt in the air, he grabbed Charlie. So they were both dangled from a pipe outside Jade and mine's window while everyone was exiting the building. And in an unfortunate circumstance, the whole school gathered at that side of the school so everyone saw them hanging from the pipe. Jade and myself had run off, shutting our window and abandoning our friends.

We acted shocked that they were there and claimed that we had no clue they were planning on climbing through the window. They got 5 months detention for it. But that isn't the funniest thing. Oliver's trousers aren't the strongest material so they ripped right down the middle and basically just fell off his legs. So he was left standing in his boxers and t-shirt in front of the whole school with a disorientated Charlie.

The. Funniest. Sight. Ever!

We still like to remind Oliver of that moment and every time we do, his cheeks heat up and go so red that would put Charlie's fire to shame.

I wave goodbye to Jade and wander over to where Miss Kandy and a bunch of other students stand.

"Hello again, Miss Kandy." I greet as I approach.

"Oh, hello Sally."

"Is everything okay in the school? What caused the alarm to go off?"

"A science experiment gone wrong, I think." Miss Kandy pulls out her tablet and taps the screen a few times. "Yep. Mr Hollien's experiment blew up."

"Oh, well that's typical." I say, rolling my eyes. Mr Hollien, the school's science teacher, is infamous for blowing things up and setting things on fire.

"Is it?" Miss Kandy inquires, being new she doesn't understand some of the works of the school.

"Yep. Mr Hollien blows up almost every experiment he does. He's caused more alarms and visits from the fire department than any of the students of the past 50 years or so." I explain. I know this because I once had to do a talk on one of the teachers in the school and I chose Mr Hollien because I thought it'd be fun to have an excuse to see him blowing stuff up.

"Wow. Why do they keep him as a teacher, then?"

"Cause he's the only science teacher we have."

Miss Kandy nods in understanding before double checking she has all her students. I walk to a group of first years and smile at them politely.

"Hey guys. How you finding the school?" I ask, trying to be nice.

"Get lost, loser!" A boy with sandy brown hair and green eyes snaps at me.

"Cause your a loser and no one wants to be seen with a loser!" He tells me as if it were obvious.

"So why are all these people hanging around you?"

The crowd around us 'Ohhhh!' and he glares at them, annoyed.

"Cause I ain't a loser, that's why!"

"Well, obviously you are since you feel the need to insult a complete stranger who was only trying to be nice and polite."

"You're stupid!"

"Wow, are you eight years old? Cause that insult's weak... just like you. It's a perfect match." I smile happily.

He looks stumped. He wracks his brain for an insult and I hear every single one he thinks of.

"Careful, don't hurt yourself thinking with that tiny brain of yours." I tell him. "And just so you know, if you're going to insult or bully anyone here, find out their power first cause I just read everything in your tiny little head." I smirk and turn on my heel.
