8. Chapter 8

As I enter the classroom, an incredibly clean smell assaults my nose. It's a mix of fresh paint, new carpet and Febreeze. I inhale deeply and walk to the middle of the room where a teacher's desk and leather sofa sit. I slip my bag off and drop it by the side of the sofa before spinning round and sinking into the leather.

I wait for a minute and take the sight in. Miss Kandy's desk is disorganized and messy with pens running free of their case and loose papers scattered here and there. Her computer hums lowly, hibernating in a deep slumber. The computer chair is pushed back, like she left the room in a hurry.

I glance around the rest of the room. To the right lies a wooden dresser, bowls of colourful sweets perched on top. On the back wall, behind the desk, a printer sits on a table along with what looks like a scanner. Beneath the table sits a shredder, silent waiting for something to sink it's razor-sharp teeth into. Bookcases line the left wall, the titles varying from 'All Children Are Special' to 'Zimi Zoulou's Guide to Teaching'. I sigh at some of the cheesy titles as the door opens behind me. I look over my shoulder and see Miss Kandy with her back on the door, like there was a large gust of wind trying to open the door.

"It's manic out there." Miss Kandy pants, pushing lightly away from the door. "Anyway, hello again Sally."

She makes her way round her desk and sits on the computer chair. Quickly, Miss Kandy taps her keyboard and then looks me in the eye.

"So, Sally. Just to confirm, you're powers are?"

"Telepathy and telekinesis." I state.

"Okay, since it's the first lesson, I think we should get to know each other before jumping straight into the learning." She suggests. I nod in response, willing to go along with anything. "How about we say a little bit about ourselves and then I can evaluate your current skills. You go first."

"Uh, okay. My name's Sally Stone and I'm 14 years old. I have 2 younger brothers and a younger sister. Jackson and Max are twins and are 11 while my little sister, Carlie is 3. I love them all, Max would probably be my favourite. My best friend is Jade May and our two other friends are Charlie Walker and Oliver Trent. My favourite film is Shrek and Harry Potter and my favourite Disney film is Lilo & Stitch."

"Me too! I love Lilo & Stitch!" Miss Kandy squeals. I smile awkwardly. "Right, my turn. My name is Alicia Kandy and I'm 28 years old. I have one sister named Kailey who is 21 this year. I've been engaged for 3 years to my lovely boyfriend, Greyson Michaels. I don't have any kids but I'm hoping to have some in the future. I'm new at teaching and when I'm not tutoring you, I'll be teaching Languages. I am fluent in Spanish, French, German, Welsh, Gaelic and many others."

"Wow, that's a lot of languages." Miss Kandy laughs and nods.

"Yup but I love learning and speaking different languages. It's also my power. Pretty useless but comes in handy for my job."

I nod, realizing that her power is that, no matter the language, she can understand whatever anyone says. "That's cool."

"Sometimes," She mutters, thinking I can't hear her. "Anyway, let's test your powers now. How about you start by lifting that sofa?" I nod quickly and hop up from the sofa. I stand to the side and focus on the cracked leather. With my mind, I slowly lift the sofa up. It hovers just above the height of the desk. Miss Kandy nods and praises me before telling me to put it down. I do so and sit back down.

"Okay, Telekinesis, check." Miss Kandy ticks something in a notebook. After another quick scribble, she looks back to me. "Now for Telepathy. This is going to be easy. All I want you to do is to read my mind, okay?" I nod quickly to her, signalling that I understand.

I squint slightly as I focus on Miss Kandy. Words soon echo quietly into my head.

Sally, if you can hear this, wave to me with your left hand.

I pause for a second, figuring out which hand is my left one. When I remember, I raise it and wave to Miss Kandy who is only across the desk from me.

"Good." Miss Kandy gets up and walks out the door. I sit, slightly stunned and confused until I hear Miss Kandy.

Can you still hear me Sally?

"Yes." I say, slightly louder through the door.

"Great. 1 minute." Footsteps walking away sound.

What about now?

The voice is crackled like when you're on the phone with someone who's going through a tunnel.

I get up and open the door. Miss Kandy is standing at the end of the hall.

"Yes, I could hear you but it was slightly crackled." Miss Kandy nods, rejoining me inside the room.

She scribbles some notes down and ticks something before she thinks,

I wonder if she can project her thoughts into others' minds?

"I dunno, I've never tried."

Miss Kandy looks confused before realizing that I heard her thoughts. "Okay, try speaking to me through your mind." I nod to her, thinking about what to say.

Hi Miss Kandy.

"Hello Sally." She automatically replies, without realizing that my lips were still. "You did it! You can project your thoughts into others, that is a very handy skill as well as your others of course."

Miss Kandy starts writing notes on my tutoring and I, for a lack of anything better to do, watch her. After a minute, she seems to sense my gaze.

"You alright, Sally?"

"Yup, just a bit bored." I admit, feeling a slight colour tint my cheeks.

"You may take your phone or iPod out if you want. But no texting anyone in the school." I nod and pull my iPod and phone from my bag. I slip the earphones in and start playing a playlist of all my favourite singers and bands: One Direction, Little Mix, Lordi, LMFAO, Lily Allen, Taylor Swift, Avril Lavigne and Miley Cryus. I admit that it's an odd selection but I love all their music.

'I'm Sexy And I Know It' by LMFAO plays and I hum along, tapping my phone screen, awakening it from it's slumber.

It's a bit loud, isn't it?

A voice says. I glance up and spot Miss Kandy looking at me. When she notices my gaze, she looks down, like she forgot I read minds.

"Sorry, do you want me to turn it down?"

"Oh, no. It's just that won't your ears hurt with that volume?"

I shake my head before responding. "I'm used to it."

"Alright, don't blame me if you go deaf, then." Miss Kandy goes back to her work as I look back to my phone. 9 new texts. All from my best friends, or ex-best friends.

I tap on Lily's messages, reading them first:

Message 1:

Hey Sally! Wat u up 2? Been ages since I seen u! Havin fun at ur posh skool?

Message 2:

Sal! You bettr reply coz gues wat! Mark Ronan asked me out! Do u remember him?

Message 3:

Wow, Sal, Ur busier than I thought at that new skool of urs. U never reply.

I feel a slight twinge of guilt sweep through me. I should've checked my phone sooner. She probably thinks I'm ignoring her when I'm actually busy doing school stuff or hanging out with Charlie, Jade and Oliver. I exit Lily's messages and tap on Sasha's:

Message 1:

Message 2:

Too l8! Alredy piked with the help of Lil and Mols. Hope u can endure 3 hrs of........... w8 4 it!

Message 3:

I subconsciously smile and exit to check Molly's messages as well:

Message 1:

Message 2:

Message 3:

OMG! U have! U've replaced us! U sed we'd always b frends! And now look. 2 years l8r & u've forgoten me! & the others! I can't believe u!

My heart stops as I read the last message. My breath catches in my lungs and I quickly type the reply, without a second thought.

To: Molly.

No! Molly! I haven't forgotten u! I've just been really busy at school! We barely get a break and a chance to use our phones. There's not the best signal either. But I promise you Mols, I haven't forgotten you!

I press 'send' and felt slightly bad for lying about the signal. Truth is that there's amazing signal here. But I need her to forgive me, she's been my best friend forever. I don't want to lose her. Even if I never see her anymore, I can't bear the thought of her hating me! I gotta get her to trust me again.
