2. Chapter 2

I hear the shuffle of duvets and then the thumps of bare feet on the polished wooden floor. Jade's up. She pads over to my bed and yanks my duvet off. I fake annoyance and curl into a ball, yelling at her that 'I'm tired' and 'I don't wanna go to lessons!' but she knows me too well.

The mattress beside me dips, signifying that Jade's climbed onto my bed next to me. I feel Jade's hands sliding into my armpits, tickling me. I squeal and scream as I come out of my ball and flop about on the mattress like a fish in a star shape. I use all the air in my lungs to laugh and soon run out. I choke as I try to slap Jade's hands away.

"Stop it! I can't breathe!" I yell at her. She promptly stops and hops from my bed.

"Then get up. We have two days left before the school's gonna be overrun by kids." She tells me, skipping to the dressing table which sits in a corner by the en suite door. "We gotta make the most of the calm, peace and quiet."

"I was making the most of the peace and quiet til you started tickling me!" I retort, dragging my feet off the bed and pushing myself up. When I hear her silence, I glance over at her. She's concentrating on applying her make-up. She always does this. I sigh and walk to the bathroom.

I turn on the shower and hold a hand beneath the running water, testing the heat. As the water gets hot enough, I lock the door and strip before slipping into the flow of water. I let the water run over me, soaking my hair and body. I squelch out some shampoo and conditioner and wash my hair, making it silky smooth and shiny. I turn the shower off before I slip past the glass divider and am met with a rush of frozen air which causes me to hug myself for warmth. I grab a fluffy towel and dry most of my body and tie my hair up into a turban. With that, I slip into my cozy robe an unlock the door.

As I leave the bathroom, I'm met with an annoyed looking Jade.

"What?" I ask her, heading to my wardrobe which sits on the wall, directly opposite my bed.

"Do you have any idea how long you take!" She asks, heading into the bathroom, locking the door in the process.

I shrug before pulling open my wardrobe and scanning the mass of clothes. I always take all my clothes to school as there's no uniform. Well, a uniform would be hard if you had people changing shape at random points in time, which occasionally happened at Mystique Academy. I pull out my favourite pair of skinny jeans, a plain black tank top and a crimson Hollister hoody. Knowing that Jade will be in the bathroom for a couple more minutes, I change into my chosen outfit. I barely think about my shoes as I pull on my usual pair of black Converse.

I perch on the edge of the Dressing Table stool and brush my pair back into a high ponytail. I look into the mirror before looking at the right side of the table, where my make-up sits. All I have is one make-up bag which contains; Black mascara, Clear mascara, a palette of eye shadows, a few eye liners, a powdery foundation (Which I use to hide the purple under my eyes when I don't get enough sleep) and various lip balms and glosses. I pull the zip back and lift out my clear mascara, applying it quickly. I add a light eye shadow and outline my eyes with eye liner. For my lips, I put on some lip balm and then cover it with a light pink gloss to give it a nice shimmer.

"You ready?" A voice asks. I turn and see Jade leaning against the bathroom door frame, staring at me. I nod and hop up, grabbing my bag as I go.

I meet Jade at the door and we head into the hallway. My bag swings on my shoulder with the weight as we walk down to the hall to find our other friends. Our best friends usually arrive a couple days before school, to miss the pushing, shoving and annoying routine of settling in while everyone else is. We chat and talk as we walk towards the central area of the mansion.

"Oliver! Charlie!" Jade exclaims before running towards our friends who are sitting on a sofa talking.

"Hey Jade. Hey Sally." Charlie says, waving at us. I smile my 'Hello' and follow Jade at a walking pace.

"Hey Charlie." I say, giving him a quick hug while Jade hugs Oliver. "Hey Ollie." I say as me and Jade switch boys.

"Hey Sal, Hey Jade." Oliver says, as he pulls back from the hug.

"How were your Summers?" I ask both boys as we walk towards the main staircase, a large grand set of polished, white wood with matching banisters that are lined with gold.

"Great. My parents took me to Australia. I basically spent the whole Summer either scuba diving or in one of the many pools." Oliver explains. It makes sense, considering his power. He has the power to control water, more commonly known here as a WaterBender. Element Benders are one of the more common powers that you find here.

"Ace! What about you Charlie?" Jade says, as we reach the landing at the top of the stairs.

"Good, I guess." He says, staring at the ground.

"What did you do?" I ask, lifting his head.

"I kinda, accidently set my Great Aunt's wig ablaze." He says. I shake my head, sighing.

"Really? Your Great Aunt's wig?" I ask. This is a usual occurrence for Charlie. He's a FireBender, so he can control fire but he can also make things heat up. But if he makes something heat up too much, he can create fire. So setting light to his Great Aunt's wig isn't that bad. Last year, he set light to the curtains in the Theatre and half the school burned down. Luckily with all the people with powers around here, the school was fixed in no time.

"Well, it was her own fault. She tried to kiss me!" He defends himself. Another thing about FireBenders is that they can't always control their powers as fire is unpredictable and untameable so only experienced Benders can control it properly.

I sigh again as we head towards the lift which lies on the other side of the landing. We walk around the large circle hole in the floor, it's like a balcony, making the ground floor seen. Jade presses the lift button and the doors open straight away. We all file in and then comes the hard part; Choosing where to go and what to do. Oliver says we should go swimming, but me and Jade did that yesterday. Charlie says we should go see a film, but there's no new films and we've seen all of them. I suggest we just go to the new arcade room, me and Jade checked it out a few days ago and knew we had to go back. But Jade says no to all these ideas.

Out of the four of us, Jade is most like the leader. She isn't always, but usually she decides what we do, mainly because we all know that she'll pick something that we'll all enjoy.

Jade presses the 5th floor button and the lift slowly rises. I lean against the corner of the small room and stare at the floor of the opposite corner. After a minute or two, I look around the lift. It's small, with golden cream wallpaper lining the bottom half of the walls while glistening mirrors covered the top half. The cream coloured carpet looked fresh and clean, like it always did before school.

"So, where are we actually going?" Oliver asks as he resumes his standing position. I shrug and look to Jade who taps the side of her nose.

"Secrets, secrets. They're not to tell. Secrets, secrets. You can take them to hell." Jade recites in rhyme. It was a phrase I had learnt when I was little and when I came here and met my friends, I taught it to them. I smile at Jade.

The lift journey soon ends and we file out. Jade strides ahead while me and the boys follow behind like puppy dogs. I know the hallways we walk through well but I have never taken the path we now go.

We walk for a few minutes til we reach an old door. The wood chips and the silver handle is dull, shine-less and cracked. Oliver, Charlie and I all stare at the door while Jade happily approaches and grabs the handle. With a slight turn and a great push, the door opens revealing a dark tunnel, from which the smell of dust and damp creeps out.

"Come on." Jade says, slowly creeping into the darkness. We follow after her, slower than her. Less sure. Less confident.

"Urhh... Jade?" Charlie asks as we walk forward, blind by the dark, dank room.

"Yes?" Comes a reply from somewhere far ahead of us.

"Why are we here? And where are we going?" Charlie asks. There's a pause but we keep walking, listening close to each other's footsteps to make sure we don't lose anyone. Soon we hear Jade stop.

"We're here." Her voice says before there's a click! and an old light bulb flickers to life. We look around. We're standing by the door of a large room, none of us had seen before. Boxes lay scattered about the floor, making towers to the slanting ceiling and covered in a thick layer of dust. Other unusual objects sit around the room. Old floor lamps, an ancient sewing machine, trunks locked with large heavy padlocks, towers of books rise from the creaky, wooden floor boards, the painted colours peeling away from the covers. Me, Charlie and Oliver look at Jade, whose smile is bigger than ever.

"Welcome to the Mystique Academy hidden attic!"
