10. Chapter 10

I stand on my toes and try to look over everyone's head to see if I can spot Jade. After multiple failed attempts, I go to Miss Kandy.

"Miss Kandy?" I gain her attention.

"Yes?"

"I feel lonely, can speak with my friend, Jade?" She nods. "Well, I would but I don't know where she is. Can I use my powers?"

"Sure." She smiles and goes back to checking people off her list. I smile and skip over to the grassy area, near where the group of first years stand. Carefully, I bend down and grip the grass. I pull it up, lifting a large patch of grass. I place it on the concrete and sit down on it. The first years stare at me and a few giggle at me but I brush them off, ignoring them.

I raise my arms out to the sides, keeping my palms facing he grass and dirt I'm sitting on. I close my eyes and concentrate. Soon, I feel the ground disappear from under my feet. I open my eyes and see that I'm floating. As I float higher and higher, I glance at the first years. The boy that I completely owned earlier is in shock.

I look around and spot Jade chatting with a few other girls that I recognise from last year. I lower myself down, keeping an eye on Jade until I'm only slightly taller than everyone else, making myself less noticeable from far off.

Hey Jadie!

Jade looks all around. She seems confused.

Where the hell are you?! You have to be able to see the person to send messages, don't you?

Yeah, I do just now. But I can see you. Look.

I raise myself up a bit, as Jade looks around more. She eventually spots me and waves. I wave back at her.

So, what's up?

Miss Kandy says that the alarm went off cause of Mr Hollien.

What else is new? Think it's a bad fire? We're usually back inside by now.

I look around. It's true. Usually, when there's a fire alarm, we're back inside in about five minutes but we've been outside for about fifteen minutes now. Weird..

Possibly. But it's nothing that can't be fixed, right?

Yeah. Wait, looks like we're going in now. See ya in Maths.

I float down and stand up. I put the grass back and hope no one will notice. I smile at the first years and skip into the the crowd of students wanting to get inside, where it's warm.

I walk down the halls, people surrounding me. Then the boy from earlier squishes his way through til he's standing next to me.

"What do you want, Squirt?" I ask him, keeping my eyes ahead.

"Who you calling Squirt, loser?" He replies.

"If you're going to talk to me, do it when you've grown up and can think of better comebacks." I tell him bluntly. He's about to speak but thankfully, my classroom appears and I disappear through the door before he can.

"Hi Mr Cooper." I say, noticing that he's the only one in the room.

"Hello Sally. Remember your detention."

"Sure, as soon as you tell me when it is, I'll be there." I slide into my seat and lean back, waiting for the others to arrive.

"This lunch time. Let's get it over with sooner rather than later."

"Fine." A mass of students walk in and sit in their seats. Jade joins me and sits next to me.

As the last student walks in, Mr Cooper closes the door. "Right, back to work. I don't want to see any of you during your free time finishing this work."

We all start working again, me on a new sheet that Mr Cooper must have out on my desk while he was alone in the classroom.

Five minutes later, the classroom blinds close and the light go out, leaving the room in complete darkness. I have an idea of what this is and my guess is correct when a bright, large sphere fades in to the room. At the front of the class, the sphere floats, bobbing very lightly, almost unnoticeable.

Madame Harresson's face appears in the sphere as she begins to speak.

"Good day students and teachers. I'm afraid we have some bad news." She looks down, almost like she's hurt or as if the words she needs to say are too difficult to speak. "As you may or may not know, one of Mr Hollien's experiments went wrong and now we're left with half of our school building, unusable. We would be able to fix it but unfortunately, we are having a few financial troubles which means that we can either pay to fix the damage or we can keep the school running.

"But if we don't fix the damage, the school and everyone in it is at a health and safety risk. So either way, we cannot keep the school open which means that this will be the last year of Mystique Academy. I am truly sorry to all students. Old and new. But exams and lessons will still be going ahead so do not think that as this is the last year, you can all bunk off and do what you like. Just try to make the most of the time we have here. That is all."

The sphere disappears and the class is silent. No one speaks. No dares to. I zone out, thinking and trying to process what I just heard.

The whole school's silent.

Someone thinks. I look around for the owner of the thought and soon decide that it's Lizzie Brown, a girl with straight brown hair and olive coloured eyes. Her power is super hearing. Not the coolest but it's still handy.

But none of this matters as the school is closing. Meaning that we're all losing the one place where we can be ourselves without worrying about being caught and dissected.
