2. Really.

8th of December 2012, Washington DC

I couldn't believe what he was saying. All the years I’ve worked at the CIA, I never thought I would be assigned such a huge job. But wait a minute. If Barkley wanted me to save Santa Claus that meant… “You want me to go to Canada?” I asked, horrified. “Yes, Paul. I’m sorry it had to be you, but it seemed fit. You are to leave tomorrow morning at 8:30 am and you are allowed to bring one companion along with you. But choose wisely, Paul. This is a hard task, and you need somebody you can trust.” I already knew who I would bring, if he was up for it. I stood up to leave, but Barkley had forgotten one little detail. “Mr. Barkley?” “Yes, Paul?” “Where am I supposed to find Santa Claus in Canada? It’s huge!”  I asked. “You’ll get a chip so we can tell you all the details and information we pick up along the way. Oh, and don’t forget, this is a very secret mission. If the American citizens realize Santa is gone, their hearts will be broken, as will the Christmas spirit. The only one you may tell is your companion. Good luck, Paul.” He nodded once, and I turned to leave.    After I had had time to process all of this, I thought about my companion of choice. It was obviously going to be Jack Riley. He had been my best friend since I started working here. He showed me how to shred unwanted papers, file them and how to make coffee in the cafeteria. Even though my department is supposed to be intelligent, nobody can figure out how to use that coffee machine.      Once I found Jack, I explained everything Mr. Barkley had told me. His response was a huge grin, and the following words: “You know I got your back bro!” he said as he lifted his hand, waiting for a high-five. “So tomorrow we descend,” I said as the weight of the responsibility started to fill my consciences.
