an ode to all the lonely hearts

1. an ode to all the lonely hearts

wake up. don’t groan and go back to sleep. your body has woken you for a reason.

get up. open your window.

i don’t care if it’s raining, open it wide.

smell the air. gasp in sleepy shock as you feel it hit your face. you can almost taste the freshness of the dew.

listen to the birds. their song never tires. just stop for a minute and listen.

go downstairs and put the kettle on. make some coffee. or tea, if that’s your preference. don’t wait for it to brew.

go outside. put a dressing gown and slippers on if you have to. but go outside. see it, feel it, smell it.

is it cold? wet? is the sun out? can you feel the dew crackling under your feet?

you’re outside, in health and you’re alive. the world is for your taking. what more could you wish for?

go back inside, into the warmth. drink your coffee. or tea.

remember how real the world is. sometimes we are so preoccupied with our lives inside our homes, we forget to look at the big picture, we forget how trivial our problems are.

when you get a chance, or feel like you need to, go outside. maybe just for a moment, or maybe longer. camp outside all night if you have to. but do it, when you need to feel alive. it’s there for your taking. all there. all you have to do is reach out for it.

now go back inside, go back to bed if you wish. or get dressed, do something. you have the whole day ahead of you; make the most of it.
