Heal Me

We'd run away from home, my little sister and I. We were helpless. Until he came along with his dark, bushy eyebrows and windswept hair. His name was Liam.

14. Christmas Eve

It was December 24th. Christmas Eve. Liam and I had finished shopping for Lydia’s Christmas presents earlier that day and by the looks of the sea of bags on the hotel room floor she was being properly spoiled this year. It was nice to give her a Christmas that she would remember for the positives and not negatives. Lydia was coming out of her shell so much nowadays and would chatter away to Liam for hours if I let her. It was good to see her happy. Free.

Lydia was settled down for bed in her brand new pyjamas patterned with angels and snowflakes, clutching the teddy bear that Liam has bought for her when we first met that fateful day. Liam and I were sitting with hot chocolate and marshmallows, cuddled up on the couch and watching ‘The Grinch’, which was Lyd’s new favourite movie. It has suddenly dawned on me that this was the movie I had seen countless families watching the day that we ran away. It was amazing how small the world was! I could hear Lydia’s soft little voice singing from the other room, the tiny voice was repeating the chorus of ‘Where Are You Christmas’ over and over again. It was so comforting.

“Belle?” said Liam’s voice tentatively.

“What’s up?” I replied, turning from the TV to look at him properly.

“I was saving this to give to you tomorrow but I don’t think that I can wait. If you don’t like it then it’s fine, I can take it back.” Liam gabbled in a rush, pushing a black box tied with red silk ribbon.

Carefully I peeled back the ribbon, reached up and tying my hair up with it before opening the box. Shaking slightly as I lifted the lid of the box I looked at Liam, perplexed. Looking back down to the box I saw a fine silver cord of necklace and dangling from it was the most beautiful silver locket engraved with a delicate rose. Gasping I scooped it up and over my head, letting it settle on my neck as the locket fell just below my chest.

“It’s beautiful.” I murmured quietly, grinning at Liam, not knowing what else to say.

“I got a matching one for Lydia, but she can open hers tomorrow! Look inside.”

I slid my nail underneath the side of the locket, as it opened with a click. Inside there were two sides, one with a picture of Lydia and one with a picture of myself, Liam and Lydia. I couldn’t stop smiling.

“I love it. Thank you” I whispered as my eyes filled with tears and I cuddled closer into Liam’s chest.

After twenty minutes or so of watching ‘The Grinch’ and cuddling with Liam we both decided that it was time to go to bed as no doubt tomorrow would be a long day filled with excitement.

As I opened the door to my bedroom in the hotel suite I turned to face Liam and found that he was staring at me.

“Thank you...” I gushed before cutting off as I turned towards the open door of the bedroom.

I froze.
