18. When you need someone

I spend the night as far away from Gale as possible.

I want to love Gale, but he's so frustrating. I do feel guilty though for saying all those things, but I'm not going back. He needs to know that I was serious. I meant what I said. Katniss has never loved him as much as Peeta.

I walk through a path of trees, kicking the leaves up in the air. I feel betrayed. There are only 10 of us left now. I suspect three were killed by the careers earlier this morning. The canon boom had woken me up earlier that morning.

I feel like I can't go on anymore.

"Hurry this up will you" I shout

I hope they can hear me. Almost on cue I hear the boom of a canon. I can only hope it's not Gale. He means the world to me, despite everything.

I feel for my braid in my hair. It reminds me of home. The bakery, my parents, Laila, Darius. I can almost see their faces, and it's just that that keeps me going. I won't let them down. They need to know I died fighting. I remember Darius words "stay alive!"

Then I see Gale's face in my mind. I have to be with him. I run back in the direction of the tree. When I reach it I start to climb, but I can't see him. The branch where we sat, is now empty, no sign of life. I drop down.

I yell his name.

I drop to the floor, crying. Why did I let him go? I curl up in a ball, silently crying.

Suddenly I feel a hand on my shoulder. I force myself to look up.

But it's not him.
