6. The Journey Begins

The train sped through Panem at 300 mph. Gale and I stare at each other waiting for someone to make the first move. But we don't have to. Katniss walks into our cabin and sits next to Gale, they exchange a kiss and hold each others hand. I can't say I am particularly pleased about having Katniss as our mentor. Especially as we have unsolved matters between us.

"Pretty unfortunate for you to get picked! Especially, well as um, Peeta um was lost in the 74th games" Katniss says frowning at me. I can tell she can't stand me.

"And, who's fault was that?" I reply, unable to hold my tongue.

"Hey, it wasn't my fault, I wanted to save him, it's, well, Cato was, Ugh" She shouts.

"Maybe if you'd killed Cato when you had the chance, maybe Peeta would still be alive" I can't control my anger now, I've been waiting to say this for years.

"And that would leave him where? At home, to mourn the loss of his sister?"

"At least he would be at home with someone he actually loved, do you seriously think he loved you?"

I can't take it anymore. I pounce, pulling her hair and she fights back, pinning me to the floor. I had no idea how strong she was. She pulls me up and pushes me against the wall.
"I loved him!" she screams "And he loved me! It wasn't my fault"

Tears roll down my cheeks as I think about it all. Peacekeepers enter and pull Katniss away, but the pressure is all too much. I fall to the floor.

When I wake up, I'm in my cabin, in my bed, lying under the warm duvet. I sit up. Walk towards the door and wiggle the handle. Its locked! They've locked me in. I scream and hammer on the door. After 10 minutes I roll into a ball and cry.

I hear the click of the lock. Gale walks in, he puts his arms around me.

"Look, don't worry about her. She really did love your brother" he says helping me onto the bed.

I nod and stare at the floor.

"She loved him more than she will ever loved me, and I can't blame her, Peeta was wonderful!"

I smile recalling fond memories of Peeta, in the woods with me and my Dad, helping at the bakery and the times when he would say "Now, now Cass, keep your chin up, worse things happen in the Games"

Gale leaves and I sleep. Thinking yes, now I understand, I know worse things do happen in the games, and I haven't even got into the arena yet!
