3. The Hardest Part

"No, no, no" I tell myself. "They must have made a mistake, it can't happen like it did with Katniss. That tore her life apart.

Laila pulls away from me, and I look at her face, more frightened than ever. She starts to walk up.

"Laila Mellark" Effie repeats scanning the audience for her. It can't happen like this I think, not after we just lost Peeta.

What would Katniss do. I look around for her. Her eyes catch mine. She gives me the look that says you have to, go on.

I do the only thing that I can think of doing, the only way out for Laila

"I volounteer as tribute!" I yell. All eyes are on me

"I believe district 12 has yet another volounteer, up you come dear" she gestures for me to come up. I take a few steps but Laila catches hold of my arm

"Cassidy, no, you can't do this" she cries, her eyes filling with tears. A crowd of peacekeepers surround us. One pulls her away. My sisterly instinct kicks in.

"Leave her alone" he backs away, but others come foward and take hold of both of Laila's arms and the others take hold of mine. They are pulling us apart, and there is nothing I can do. They take Laila into the crowd and I lose sight of them.

"Please, I need to see her." I cry desperately.

"You'll have plenty of time later" the peacekeeper says

"Don't worry, it'll be ok" I call to Laila, but in my head I know that nothing will be ok again.
