10. How not to impress the game makers

I stayed silent the whole evening. I thought. Surely I would be punished in the arena, but I have not heard anything. Effie gave me a stern talking to.

"Its not just you they'll punish, they might take it out on your stylist or Katniss or mee" she shrieked rushing like a headless chicken from the room.

Gale has stayed quiet, I don't think he understands how strongly I feel about this. Its like something in my heart keeps telling me they have no right to do this, who are they to decide if someone lives or dies. Its disgusting to think that they can watch us in the arena and not care. Their only care in the world will be if their favourite dies or they lose a bet. They couldn't care less about us.

I have more important things to worry about now though. Just a few days from now I will be entering the arena. I don't have time to make more mistakes. But I have a bit more time to redeem myself. Every year the tributes go and perform their skills to the game makers privately. So I am planning something that will make them think they were wrong. I'm not just a weak girl who volunteered because she didn't want her sister to die. I want to make them think that I volunteered to win this thing, no matter what they decide to throw at us. I do want to show them I am more than just a piece in their games.

Katniss said no allies but I have formed a good relationship with Winnow and Laurel. They seem quite nice. Not like the others, who will kill to win. They are just innocent girls who's odds weren't in their favor at the reaping. I understand. None of this was meant to happen, it just happened.

The time came to impress the gamemakers and my mind went blank, I forgot all training. Gale was more than prepared. i hadn't prepared properly and now I am sitting at the door ready to go in.

"Cass" Gale whispered "know what you're doing?"

"Nope, I'll have to just shoot some arrows and hope they'll be impressed"

"Well you can't fail with this" He smiled and pinned a mockingjay pin to my top. "Shoot straight" he said with a twinkle in his eye. "I know you can do this"

I threw my arms around him, he was one of the few tributes who didn't care about winning. I felt like I was safe as long as I stayed with him. We are interrupted by a computerized voice.

"Cassidy Mellark" It said robotically.

I walked forward shaking from head to toe. I threw a grin at Gale and then walked in.

They had set up a large room with equipment set up all around. I searched for the arrows and found them. A beautiful bow, perfectly molded to my hand. The feathers as sharp as a well an arrow. I took a deep breath in and stared at the stage full of game makers. They seemed to be busy talking, so I started to take practice shots.

"Cassidy Mellark" a voice said. It was Indigo Erwin. I could feel his icy stare even though my eyes were aimed at the target. "Starting without us I see" he smiled a villainous smile.

"I was just practicing" I say innocently

"Well you should have done that earlier" he replys.

I don't answer, I let my arrow do the talking. I aim it at his head, and shoot
