5. Goodbye District 12

Gale and I were ushered into small rooms to await our friends and family, who wanted to say goodbye. I just couldn't get my head around it. This is probably the last time I will ever see my parents, Laila, Darius and all of my friends.

"Right Cassidy, because a lot of people want to see you we're not letting everyone in. You'll have about ten people, Ok?" He asks, it's not really a question, I don't get a choice in the matter.

I nod, knowing I can't say no to a peacekeeper. They can make your life hell if they feel like it. Better not get on the wrong side. The first visitors are my friends. I say tearful goodbyes to them all. My best friend Rose hugs me so much that when the time is up a peacekeeper has to come and get her.

The last visitors mean the mother, Laila, Darius and my father. We cuddle together, knowing this will be our last time, that we will be together. It wasn't like this when Peeta left. We thought he could win, so the goodbyes were rushed, we could never have predicted...

"Whatever you do, stay alive" Darius whispers. I giggle, and he strokes my hair. Darius is the best brother. He taught me how to hunt, how to help the family and he taught me how to stay strong without Peeta. Lets hope he can teach Laila the same. I hug him, and then move onto Laila.

"Now sweetie, you have to keep going, even though I'm not here. You can do it, I know you can." She smiles and I kneel down and hug her.

My father pushes in "Do I get to say goodbye?" without pausing I stand up and we hold hands. "My little solider, finally going into battle. Remember what I taught you Cass. Try to win, we'll all be waiting for you"

I admire his faith in me.

"Now, now, I have to say goodbye too." My mother pushes him out the way.

"Although this is all very hard, you must keep going Cass. It's not a game anymore. There are real people involved, this isn't a little battle like you used to play with your father in the woods, this is real, people will die!" at this point, shes struggling to hold back her tears. "You go out there and win Cass. Win for Peeta."

She's just said the words that I dreaded, people WILL die and there's nothing I can do. But I will try, I will try to win for my family. They deserve it. I need to honor my family. But none of my family addressed the fact, that I probably will die. Then where will the family honor be?
