Chapter 4

[edited 31/8/15]

After that, talk of the school, major breakdown I had in the library, embarrassment overwhelmed me when students and teachers kept staring at me with stunned faces. From the library, during the lunch break and all through the walk to my last lesson everyone had made me the talk of school with whispers, sniggers and mutters about what happened where ever I turned. I decided that it was best to ditch last lesson quickly and shoot out of the school exit like my life depended on it. Once I was out of the school gates, I walked down the deserted road feeling more at ease and calmer now that I was no longer in the presence of people. Soon enough I was standing outside my grand home, the gates were tall and intimidating. I pushed the gates open and ran down the pathway with my gleaming golden key in hand which led me into the keyhole of my comfort zone. As soon as I opened the front door, mother came rushing out from the kitchen and stood close right up to my face whispered to me.

"Honey, we've got some visitors coming over from next door, they're our new neighbors" the sentence alone made me groan tiresome sighs. There was a never 'how was your day?' or 'how are you?' from her, just news after news. Mother was always busy with her successful interior decorating company but that meant that she never had enough time to actually sit down and have any proper sit down kind of family time with me or my brother.

"What do you want me to do?" I asked her blatantly.

"What makes you think I want you to do anything?" she said as innocently as she possibly could but I knew she was lying. I knew her long enough to know when she was lying, or annoyed, frustrated, angry even sad which she rarely is. She has everything she would want, expect one thing, a daughter who abided her every rules.

"Spit it out mother" I rolled my eyes in annoyance if she wasn't going to tell me then I would simply leave. There's no point saying you don't want me to do anything when you really you do but just don't really want to tell me. It’s a bad habit of hers.

"Well... I just want you to clean yourself up a bit. You know, be a little more presentable. I've left you a nice dress in your room and my make-up artist will be there shortly" I looked at her wide with shock. Just a little bit cleaned up was what she said but it seemed like I was going to have a full makeover. I didn't want to waste time arguing instead I ran up the stairs almost breaking my bedroom door handle to see what abomination lay on my bed for me to wear. There sitting ever so nicely on my king-sized bed, a simple lace green coloured dress that looked too exposing and uncomfortable but had a underlining of silk to cover my chest to the knees.

"I AM NOT WEARING THAT!" I shouted out at the top of my lungs and right on queue mother and her make-up artist stood outside the door.

"Honey, come on now, you'll look wonderful and sophisticated and it's only for a few hours. First impressions always counts" she clapped her hands together and then introduced me to her make-up artist who was called Juan, he didn't exactly have the best English but it was bearable. I reluctantly took my clothes off and put on a black bathrobe and sat in the chair where I let 'Juan' do my make-up. It was like an hour since I was last standing and my bottom had grown impatiently numb, I began to fidget in the seat until Juan pushed his palms down onto my shoulders.

"Fantastico chica, you look beautiful!" he kissed both my cheeks and swivelled the chair around for me to see my face. This is where the cliche moment happens but there’s no denying it, it happens every time. I looked into the mirror and there reflecting back at me was a girl who I couldn’t recognise very well. Every feature on my face which I never would’ve noticed much before were now more defined and prominent, my hair was swept up into a effortless little bun just below the crown of my head and all that was needed to complete the look was the expensive D&G dress.

I pushed Juan out of my room and shut the door. Once I was certain the door was securely locked, I slipped off my bathrobe and put on the dress. I moved myself in front of the mirror to see that the dress was perfectly fitted and hugged snug in all the right places. I saw a figure that didn’t look too bad when I wore clothes that were the right size for me. A little tap on the door less than two minutes since I pushed Juan out of my room, I knew mother was growing impatient and anxious and probably excited more than anything that she forced her daughter to wear something very out of her comfort zone. I applaud you mother. There in front of me stood my mother's eyes wide with shock as she covered her mouth and stood still for a few minutes.

"Oh Lanna, you look stunning" she smiled at me then grabbed me by both shoulders; engulfing me into a huge warm hug. I slowly released her and looked at her with my eyes narrowed. Yep, of course she’ll say that she’s supposed to but seriously did I really have to go to all this trouble just to look ‘presentable’ for neighbours which I will not even bother to encounter again after this day.

"Mother, we've got visitors remember so I guess we should go... Like now" I said smugly because when I last saw her I couldn't be bothered to see them but now I am feeling slightly more confident. That’s probably because I’m not myself in any way so I guess I’ll enjoy it for the time being, it’s not like they’ll remember me when I revert back to how I normally dress and act.

"We'll then; we better make a move on." I gave her a small smile and we both walked down the stairs, my heart quickening with every step I took down though I don’t understand why I should be so nervous. We slowly made our way into the living room and as soon as I walked in my smile instantly vanished. There in my living room, sitting on my couch was the one person which I never wanted to see again. Ever.

"Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Payne, this is my oldest and only daughter Lanna Mon Claire." while mother introduced to his parents I could do one thing only and that was stare at the guy in my living room, his brown eyes gleaming as he stared back at me. It’s because of him that I acted they way that I did out of the ordinary, it’s because of him that I am now the talk of the school and it’s because of him that I can’t control myself. I was normal before he came to the school.

"Hello Lanna, my name is Clarissa; this here is my son Liam. My daughter's not here right now but she would've loved to meet you" as soon as Mrs Payne acknowledged my presence, my eyes snapped down onto the floor and I broke the stare that we both held.

"I think we should leave the two young adults to get to know each other and become friends" my mother said letting out an over excited squeal and took his parents into the kitchen leaving me alone with him. I took a seat in one of the chair opposite from him the temperature around my cheeks started to rise and my hands started to get clammy. I kept fiddling with the hem of my dress and then began to start fiddling with other things mainly because I had no idea what to do. The silence was so unbearable until a mutter from the opposite direction broke it.

"Lanna" he said with an alluring voice, the way my name fell from his lips just overpowered me with an unfamiliar feeling, a feeling of want. I looked up nervously and faced him, I watched as he leaned forward in his chair looking directly at me without any kind of disgust, hate or anything of that nature. It made me feel excitedly jumpy inside but I felt like everything that was happening was wrong, dangerously wrong.

"Liam" I said back, it was all I could say. I wasn't going to just sit there, do nothing and have him stare at me. So, I got up to leave but something caught my foot which made me tumble forward and before I could even try to stop myself hitting the hard floor in an instant two strong arms grabbed my waist and turned me around. In that moment I was swept off my feet and sucked into a complete trance as I started into those enchanting brown eyes.
