21. Chapter twenty-one: the night of the runaways and the rescue of moonshine:

Both Rummy and Rose were very silent while getting stuff ready for that night when Rummy perked up saying, “Just think Rose, this might be just what we needed, to bring Fox down, we could be heroes.”

“Or we will die and fail then there will be no evidence that Fox did all this.” Rose reviewed.

“Just trying to be positive.” Rummy said.

Then they heard the front door slam shut. “This is it.” Rummy thought as she ran to the meeting room where the kids meet for the final assault and ran past Hook and Dog who were asleep. The kids looked ready, so Rummy and Rose lead the kids to the back door, which was really a hole in the wall that was big enough for all of the kids can get through. Then she remembered Moonshine. She ran to Fox’s lair and grabbed an ax and felt a hand on her shoulder. She turned around and saw Rose looking serious.

“What are you doing?” Rose said looking at the ax.

“I’m going to get Moonshine out.” Rummy said.

“Why? She’s hurt and she will slow us down.” Rose negotiated.

“But she’s a friend, an ally, we can’t just leave her here, Moonshine came up with this plan, the whole thing, we’ve got to let her out.” Rummy pleaded.

“Your right, but if you get caught I’m not going to help you. And meet us at the meeting point.” Rose huffed and ran to join the big group of kids.

Rummy came to the stairs as she flung the door open and came down the steps quickly not knowing how much time she has left. As she was towards the end of the steps she can hear Hook screaming warnings in the background. Rummy turned around and started to come up the steps but stopped herself and turned around and told herself that this was for the good of Rose and she could take care of herself. She finally came to Moonshine’s cold cell.

“Who’s there, are you here to kill me because that no good Fox said…” Moonshine started to yell but Rummy cut her off.

“Moonshine, it’s me, I’m getting you out of here.” Rummy said.

“Rummy I’m hurt and all I would do is just slow you down and you and I know that’s the truth.” Moonshine said.

“And that’s no excuse to let you die here” Rummy said as she lifted the ax and struck the cuffs that was on Moonshine’s wrists and broke the cuffs.

“This way” Rummy said as she led Moonshine, limping though a little tunnel, up the steps and out the door into the open air. As she came to the door she heard Dog call in the background.

“The prisoner, Get them.” Dog called and Rummy turned for a second.

“But Dog, the other kids, leave them?” Hook said sounding a siren for the rest of the kids to get ready for a big attack.

As the girls came to the steps to their room Moonshine turned the corner and went up the steps, slowly at first but she gained speed.

“What are you doing?” Rummy called as she stopped herself by swinging around a post at the foot of the steps

“I have to get something.” Moonshine said as she turned to their room and came back quickly with a bracelet with light and dark pink beads and white in the middle with big dark and light brown beads of what resembled different shades of the moon, it was made out of gray pipe cleaner and she slipped it on her wrist.

     “What’s that?” Rummy asked.

“It’s, it’s my favorite bracelet.” Moonshine tried to explain but it wasn’t enough for Rummy.

“Favorite? I’ve never seen you wear it before.” Rummy questioned.

“You had never seen me wear it before because when I first came here Fox didn’t want to see anything to do with our families. He wanted us to forget them. So I hid my bracelet amongst my things so Fox would think I had forgotten my past and went on with the future, with him.”  Moonshine explained with rage building inside her. “Besides, it is the last thing I have that my parents can recognize me.

Then Rummy felt a cold hand on her shoulder.
