Identity Unknown

"Being back here made me see how much it can get to you; the training, all of the lessons, even just the environment we are in. We aren't the same as everyone else. And everyone else can never know.'

(This chapter is from Zach's perspective)

"You can't save her, Zach" he said, sounding almost sad.

"Well then I'll die trying," I insisted, but he leapt up from his leathery chair, pinning my arm behind my back.

"They'll kill you!" he spat in my ear.

"She's my sister!" I screamed, lashing out at him with all my might. He stumbled, arms flailing, hitting the polished wooden floor with a satisfied thud.

I waited for him to clamber up, but he was awfully still.

"Andrew?" I whispered. No reply.

This time I really had finished him off.

Well, that was the plan. I had been ordered to kill Agent Andrew Stevens. Almost two years ago I had had my first attempt, but he escaped. The second time, I was sure I had been successful. But apparently not, and now I was the bad guy. I was just following orders, but the CIA didn't see it that way. As a punishment, they wanted me to turn in Charlie, but I refused, offering instead to give them an alternative spy. Young, british and lethal. Bex Baxter.

Of course, they accepted. They had records of the Baxter's and knew I was giving them a suitable price. And so, I arranged for Rosa to come to the Rochester Estate, to take Bex to the CIA.

I knew that Charlie and Cammie and the others would soon figure it out, but not before Bex was in a jail cell, and I was free.

I didn't tell Joe, couldn't - he thought I was still on his side. I was, sure, but I had formed other allies in his absence. Did he expect me to sit back and wait for him?

Some would say I'm a double agent. Sure, that's the technical term, but I think it's too bold. I haven't done anything especially bad, and I was just trying to protect Charlie. It was at the cost of Bex, but I had to. Bex was smart and funny and gorgeous, but I knew she could fend for herself. And now I would go against the CIA and help her friends get her out.

For once, I felt like I had the upper hand. I was playing a dangerous game, but I felt like I understood the rules and was capable of winning. I could be on everyone's side, effectively, manipulative but helpful. I could make sure that, this time, everyone got out alive.

That's what I thought, until I heard that the CIA had set a trap. And that one spy hadn't made it out in time.
