Love At First Sight

Rachel was a normal 16 year old girl, her life was perfect. She had everything she could have possibly asked for; a boyfriend, a best friend, and and awesome dad. Then everything changed with the blink of an eye when an incident that happened 2 years ago come back to haunt her.

11. The Call

“Be nice, he hasn’t done a thing to you.” I warn Niall as he pulls out of the driveway. We debated all last night about what we were going to do when I got to Aiden’s house; he wouldn’t settle on anything. So I suggested that I would text him when Aiden and I decided to go do something, he wasn’t happy about that either. Or any of this really.

“Aren’t I always?” he suppresses a grin. At least he’s lightened up a little.

“Yes, I think it’s your Irish charm.” I say laughing as I kiss his cheek.

“Hey, no distractions!” his smile reaches his eyes and his white teeth flash.

“What? This is distracting?” I lean over and stare at him with our faces inches apart. When his breath becomes jagged I press my lips to the corner of his mouth. I look ahead of us and I see a traffic light on yellow. When we get closer it becomes red and the car comes to a halt. I look back at Niall to find his on me.

“We’re going to wreck if you keep that up.”

“And why is that?” I asked making the distance between us smaller.

“Because I don’t have enough self-control to keep from kissing you back.” His smile fades and his eyes darken; something I never thought was possible. Before I could register another thought he pushed through the wall between us and smashes his lips to mine in haste. He has never kissed me this way before, not even in the kitchen last night; that was a different kind of kiss. This kiss is indescribable and completely overwhelming to the point where I can’t think strait anymore. The only thing that I am aware of are his hand on either side of my face, trailing down my body sending electrical currents through me that I have never felt before.

“Now you’re distracting me” I smile against his lips and I feel him mimic me.

I hear a faint noise in the distance but pay no mind to it. I only realize it was a honk that continuously comes from the vehicles behind us when Niall sighs and pulls away. How long have we been sitting here? “I am fairly certain you distracted me from driving, I just reacted.” I try to ignore him but it’s impossible to hold my grin.

Niall parks the car on the curb in front of Aiden’s house. He turns off the car and unbuckles his seatbelt. I frown at him and he knows what I’m thinking.  “I promise to behave.” He tries to force a smile but he can’t fool me. He opens his door, walks around the car, and opens my door.

“Thank you” I press my lips to his and grab his hand to pull him up the sidewalk. I ring the doorbell and moments later Aiden is standing before us.

I keep waiting for someone to break the silence but it doesn’t happen, looks like I’ll have to do it. “Well.” I don’t really know where I’m going with this. “Uh.. Niall you don’t want to be late for rehearsal.” I say loosening my grip, which only makes his tighter.

“I want to say something first” his voice is low and he stares directly in Aiden’s eyes. “If I find out that you touched her in any-“

“Niall you know we’re just friends. And you know I have no intensions to do anything like that.” I wrench my hand from his grip, putting my hand on his cheek so he’ll look at me. Even though Aiden is right there, I press our mouths together.

“I know, I just worry.” He says when he pulls away, smiling a bit. “I’ll see you later.” and with that he’s gone. I watch his car pull away before I turn around.

“I’m really sorry about that.”  I apologize. “I told him to be nice several times.”

“Don’t worry about it. I don’t blame him for being upset.”

“Really? Why?” I asked curiously.

“Well, if I had someone like you I’d want to keep her too.” He lefts one shoulder. I don’t know what to say to that so I just fake a smile and avert my gaze. Eventually the silence becomes unbearable and I have to say something.

“So you want me to go get a glue stick so we can glue our feet here permanently?” I asked sarcastically, laughing along with him.

“Yeah sure, I’ll wait here.” He laughs while opening the door and motioning his hand for me to enter. “After you.”

I walk through the door into a coat room. It’s a narrow room but it makes up for what it doesn’t have in length. To my right there is a coat rack that lines half way down the center of the wall with a shelf underneath it for shoes. On the left wall there is a simple shelf with a few gloves on the top and keys hanging from hooks. And in the back of the room is a stair case leading up to a higher level in the house. Over all it’s a very plain, yet nice little room. “So, what are we doing today?” I ask.

“There’s a fair in town and we can just hang out here and go later tonight if that’s okay with you.” He suggests while rubbing the back of his neck, unsure of himself.

“Yeah that sounds like fun.” He gives a smile of relief and removes his hand from his neck.

“Why don’t I show you around then.” He walks to the end of the hall and opens a door on the left that I didn’t notice before.

We walk into a room with a big television sitting on top of a table in to front of the room while a couch sits on the opposite end with a coffee table in front of it. A medium sized window sits on the right wall filling the room with sunlight.  Underneath the TV are three game consoles; a PS3, an Xbox, and a Wii. “This is the living room; it’s where we spend our family time. Which usually just consists of play games.” He points his index finger towards the consoles.

“I can see that, what games to you have?”

“Here, take a look.” He walks over to the table the TV is sitting on and point to 2 shelves underneath full of different games.

“Wow, you have more games than I’ve ever seen together.” I laugh, I don’t even have this many games. I skim across the many titles when one catches my eye. “You have Rage?”

“Yeah it’s a pretty great game, do you like it?”

“I absolutely love it!” he laughs at me and I join in. “Why are laughing at me?” I say suppressing a smile.

“Because I’ve never met a girl this much into video games.” He shakes his head still smiling.

“Well you can’t say that anymore. And there’s nothing wrong with liking games.” I poke his chest with my index. “Because you obviously like them too.” I motion my over the mountain of games. He laughs and his smile reaches his eyes, making them sparkle.

“There’s a difference between liking them and being good at them. I doubt you can beat my mad skills.” He jokes.

“Oh really? Pick any game and you’re on.” I challenge.

“Are you sure, you might embarrass yourself.”

“You’re just scared that there’s a chance that you might lose.”

“Oh you’re definitely on. MW3 sound good to you?” he asks waving the game in my face.

“Be prepared to lose to a girl.” I laugh and grab a remote while he inserts the game into the consol. I sit on the couch and Aiden occupies the seat next to me.

“Choose your weapon wisely.” I smiles still looking at the television. I equip my class with a python, flash bangs, C4’s, and an M14 and add a red dot. Aiden adds a dual python, frags, C4’s, and a sniper rifle. “Your M14 is gonna look like a toy gun when I snipe your ass.”

“Cocky much?”

“Only when I know I’m going to win. How long do you want the match to be?”

“Surprise me.” He nods and sets the time for unlimited and arranges the points.

In the first few minutes we both just wander around getting used to the map, I round a corner and see a pair of feet behind a vehicle. I throw a flash to stun him out from behind the car, when he’s in my sights I kill him in 5 fast shots. “What was that about my M14 again?” I try to stifle my laugh.

“Don’t get so used to it, I’ll get you in a minute.”

“If that’s what you have to tell yourself,” I mock him.

By the end of the game my score was higher than his. “”I told you I would win.”

“Yeah, yeah; I let you win because I didn’t want to hurt your feelings.” He lifts his hand and pats the top of my head twice. “Wanna have some lunch and then head to the fair?” he asks taking the game out of the Xbox.

“Yeah sure,” I hand him my remote.

When he picks everything up, we headed into his kitchen. The room was a pretty big size for a kitchen; the back wall was made up of one big glass frame where the shone in, illuminating the room. A few feet from the window there was a medium sized, cherry wood, table with chairs to match. In the center of the room was a counter with a sink and dishwasher on the left and stools on the right. Behind the stools there was another counter that stretched half way down the wall with a microwave and some family pictures on top. At the end of the counter was a tall cabinet that matched the table while there was yet another counter on the opposite wall with a stove and fridge at the end.

“Take out okay with you?” he asks walking over to the phone.

“Yeah sure,” I shrugged.

When we got for our food we sat on the stools and talked for what seemed like hours. There wasn’t a certain topic we stuck to and there was never an awkward silence, that’s the main thing that I like about him; he’s always himself no matter what. We joked and laughed at each other when we spilled food on ourselves until it was time to go. “Ready to head the carnival?”

“Yeah, let me go grab my jacket.” I said walking out of the room. When I came back I heard him talking to someone on the phone, he sounded annoyed. I didn’t really know what to do because I didn’t want to eavesdrop but I didn’t want to go in there and interrupt. I decided to just go wait in the other room when I heard my name.

“Rachel? Yeah we’re going to the carnival, I-“he was cut off by whomever he was speaking to. “I know, I know. I got it- you are? See you there then.” He quickly hung up and tried to compose himself, what was that about?

I walk into the room, making as much noise as possible to let him know where I am, trying to pretend I didn’t just over hear his phone call. “Shall we?” he smirked holding his out like a gentleman.

“We shall.” I grinned.
