The Flute Player (1)

"Your test results have come back," the doctor said as soon as the door closed. I nervously looked at him, fidgiting.
"And?" My voice was barely audible. I watched him closely as he went behind his desk and to his files. I couldn't see anything in his eyes, his body language didn't suggest anything. I wanted him to hurry. I had a concert to perform in tonight, and I couldn't be late. One Direction was counting on me to play my flute with them.
"I'm sorry, Leah, but the results aren't good." The doctors eyes were sympathetic, and went on to explain the details. I didn't listen. From that moment on, I knew that the dream I was living would come to an end.

25. You Can Do It!

Harry’s Point of View

Leah had a firm grip on me, and I helplessly watched on as she started to shake and soak my shirt with her tears. Hopefully this wouldn’t cause too much speculation. She was terrified. I tried to comfort her and give her a choice.

“Leah! Leah! Leah!” The majority of the crowd pleaded her to come on. There were several very rude girls though; yelling out that she was chicken and she didn’t deserve it. I hoped Leah couldn’t hear it.

“We can just leave it,” I told Leah, while rubbing her back in an attempt to sooth her. She suddenly looked up, straight into my eyes and wiped her tears with the back of her hand. I looked straight into her eyes. Seeing only hurt and despair and anxiety. What had we done?

I turned around to see Louis trying to mouth to me. ‘Can she do it?’ He asked.

“Listen, Leah, you should decide now,” I urged her. I really wanted her to go on and show off her talent to the rest of the world. But had we done it too early?

Leah didn’t speak for a few moments. I looked at her face. Black makeup smudged her cheeks, her eyes were red and puffy. Her hair was a destroyed mess. I still felt her shake in my arms.

“Yes, Harry… I’ll go on,” she whispered.

“Good… go freshen up and then we’ll sing another song or two until you’re ready.” I let of her and started to head back to the stage, examining my shirt.

“Wait,” Leah reached for my arm. I stopped. “I don’t need to freshen up… I’ll go on as I look now, even if I do look horrible.” She nervously smiled.

“Okay.” I offered her my hand to hold as we walked to the center of the stage. The crowd started to applaud and hoot and cheer for her, telling her she could do it. The boys had broken from their circle and went back to their respective instruments, and Niall, Louis, Zayn and Liam came up to me and Leah.

“You can do it,” Niall urged and hugged Leah. Each of the boys gave her a hug.

“May I present to you, the newest and bravest member, Leah!” I shouted into my microphone and the crowd got louder.

“Okay… we’ll play Moments first,” Niall whispered in Leah’s ear and led her to where her flute was. I couldn’t tell what he was saying, but I could kind of tell that he was telling her to wait before playing. To wait for a signal.

“In this song, we want you to all get out your phones, flashlights, glow sticks… whatever you have that lights up,” Louis spoke to the crowd. “And then wave them slowly.” He held up his arms to demonstrate.

“Now… we’ll start when everyone’s a bit calmer,” Liam spoke. The crowd was still shouting and screaming for our attention, and in encouragement to Leah. A chorus of people telling each other to shut it rang throughout and ‘shhhhhhhh’ was repeated more than once.

“Okay… whenever you’re ready, Leah,” Niall told her and waved. I saw her as she closed her eyes, took a deep breath and place the flute to her lips. I waved my arms in huge arches to show the crowd what to do, and they followed. It was almost dead silent except for the shuffling of feet and whispers. Suddenly, the beautiful sound of Leah’s flute filled the space at the introduction. Liam started to sing. There were gasps and shouts saying how pretty it sounded.

By the end of the song, I didn’t think there were many dry eyes. Mine, for one, were tearing up. It was the most beautiful and perfect performance of Moments we had ever given. The fans were clapping and hooting their approval.

“Woow… that was perfect!” Niall spoke into his microphone. “Thankyou to everyone! And a special thanks to Leah!”
