The Flute Player (1)

"Your test results have come back," the doctor said as soon as the door closed. I nervously looked at him, fidgiting.
"And?" My voice was barely audible. I watched him closely as he went behind his desk and to his files. I couldn't see anything in his eyes, his body language didn't suggest anything. I wanted him to hurry. I had a concert to perform in tonight, and I couldn't be late. One Direction was counting on me to play my flute with them.
"I'm sorry, Leah, but the results aren't good." The doctors eyes were sympathetic, and went on to explain the details. I didn't listen. From that moment on, I knew that the dream I was living would come to an end.

22. Practice

Leah’s Point of View

“Okay… try not to let us distract you,” Niall instructed. “We will follow your speed, your pace. The whole band will.” I nervously nodded my head. We had gone through this many times, and sometimes it was just the matter of getting enough air into my flute, but it was mostly speeding up.

“One… two… three…” Zayn counted in. I had a bit of an introduction so I started. My fingers trembled as they hit the keys; my breath stumbled across the hole and into my flute. The sound filled up the empty stadium. I closed my eyes, trying to make my sound as big as possible.

“Shut the door…” Liam started to sing, but I hardly realized as I played along from memory. I let my flute fill the whole place with a loud, beautiful noise, it sounded perfect. I felt my body swaying to the music, and even a tear slid down my cheek.

As soon as I ran out of air on my last note, I opened my eyes to see Danielle, Eleanor, Perrie and Amber all standing at the back. I couldn’t see their faces, but I knew they were happy with the result as their claps echoed throughout.

“That was great!” Harry came up and gave me a hug. He was excited.

“I had a few tears in my eyes,” Amber admitted as she came to the stage. She went up the steps and gave me a hug. “I’m Amber Horan, Niall’s wife. You must be Leah.” She smiled.

“Yes, yes I am Leah.” I smiled and scanned the room of smiles. Eleanor, Danielle and Perrie came to introduce themselves, and I hugged each one of them.

“You know, Louis wasn’t kidding when he said you were talented!” Eleanor praised. I blushed even harder.

“Do you boys have anything else to practice?” Danielle asked.

“Well… how fast can you learn, Leah?” Zayn hesitantly said.

“Depends,” I answered. My heart started beating a bit faster. What did they want me to play?

“Can you play Little Things with us,  as well?” Harry asked. I sucked in my breath and then smiled. How did they know?

“I already have a bit of it up here,” I smiled and tapped my brain.

“Would you mind playing it tonight?” Harry asked. He seemed kind of nervous. I was too. What if I messed up? But it wasn’t like I could say no the biggest boy band ever.

“Okay, play us what you know so far,” Perrie instructed. She stood at the end of the stage. I nodded, closed my eyes and started to play. I fumbled over the first few notes, but as I continued to play the notes seemed to come easily, and before I knew it, I had completed the whole song.

“That is… woow,” Danielle replied. “That was soo pretty!”

“Thanks, Danielle.” I smiled. The boys all said it was excellent too, so I blushed. It wasn’t every day you get that kind of feedback from famous people.

“Why don’t we try singing it with you?” Harry offered.

“Sure.” We were counted in, and I started at the exact same time the singing started. This one went a lot smoother, and it soon ended.

“Awww, thanks!” Amber smiled and went to give Niall a kiss on the lips.

“Hey! None of that in public,” Liam scolded and everyone laughed.

“The concert starts in a few hours,” Eleanor stated. “Want to come shopping with us, Leah? We promise we’ll get you back in time.” She pleaded with Louis with her eyes.

“I’d love to!”
