The Bracelet of Lambazini

1. Hushabye Mountain

Chapter 1-

Hushabye Mountain

One night, about twilight, five black riders upon five black horses ride into the small town of Azzrah. They are tall, but one is shorter than the others. The riders wear long, black, tattered robes and their hands are covered in armour. The riders also wear swords at their side. Their horses have blood and dust on their hooves. They bear no tack, and are panting. Altogether they look like they have been riding hard for a very long time. The riders go straight to the mayor’s house, who also happens to be my father.

I am home when they walk in the house. The riders fling open the door, like they are saying we are better than you and we know it. My mum comes out of the kitchen. When she sees the mysterious riders, she goes into my father’s study, leaving me with my little sister Leise and the five in front of me.

After a short time father comes out with mum, both look worried. “Storm, darling, go take Leise to her room and put her to bed.” Mum says looking at me. I nod and pick her up off of the floor. When we get to our room Leise says in a whiney voice, “But Storm, I am not tired. The moon has barely risen.” I look out the window and see she is right.

I sigh knowing Leise’s games. She will want me to do something in return for going to bed without a fuss. She is the smartest six year-old I know. Looking absent-mindedly out of the window I ask, “What do you want me to do?” She tries to wave a hand in front of my face, she is too small but I get the point. “Ok, get into bed then tell me.” She does so, and then says, “Sing.” I smile, she loves hearing people sing, but hates doing it herself. I myself don’t mind singing, but I rarely do it for anyone except for Leise.

I sit down on her bed, being careful not to sit on her tiny legs. I look at Leise, she looks at me. Suddenly I know what to sing. The perfect song, that will make her go to sleep, and one I know well. I begin…

“A gentle breeze from Hushabye Mountain,

Softly blows over lullaby bay.

It fills the sails of boats that are waiting-

Waiting to sail your worries away.

It isn’t far to Hushabye Mountain,

And your boat waits down by the quay

The winds of night so softly are sighing-

Soon they will fly your troubles to sea.

So close your eyes on Hushabye Mountain

Wave goodbye to the cares of the day

And watch your boat from Hushabye Mountain

Sail far away from lullaby bay.”

I finish still looking out of the window. When I look down at Leise she is asleep, with a slight smile on her face.  I get up slowly and carefully, as not to wake her. I close the door quietly and as I walk into the living room a shock meets my eyes.

The song, Hushabye Mountain, is from the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
