21. Valentine’s Day 2 - The Promise

After Harry and Niall left the flat, I called Liam.

He answered immediately. ‘Hey, love, what’s up?’ he said and I could hear his smile over the phone.

‘I’m going to ask you something and I want you to be honest with me,’ I told him, wiping my blocked nose with the back of my hand. Emma was sitting beside me on the sofa, eating a cupcake. She had stuffed it in her mouth and had gotten her face all pink from the icing.

Bess, are you crying?’ Liam asked. He had turned all serious now.

‘No,’ I lied, sniffing. The truth was that I had been crying for a good half an hour and my nose had gotten so blocked that I could barely breathe through it. I honestly believed that Harry was cheating on me.

Why are you crying, love?’ Liam asked in the softest tone, his voice caressing me through the phone.

I parted my lips to speak, but I heard Danielle asking him in the background, ‘Who are you talking to, baby?’

Nobody, babe,’ Liam lied to her and my puffy eyes widened. Hmm, so, he called me ‘love’ all the time, but he called his fiancée ‘babe’. I knew I shouldn’t feel happy about this, but I did.

‘You shouldn’t lie to your fiancée, Liam,’ I told him, half scolding, half teasing.

Liam chuckled before he lowered his voice. ‘Is something wrong, Bessie? Did Harry do anything to hurt you? Do you want me to come over and punch him for you?’

Somehow, through all my tears, Liam had managed to make me giggle a little. I took a big breath, let it out as a deep sigh and confessed, ‘I think Harry’s cheating on me.’

At that, Liam burst out laughing and my mouth fell open. Well, that was rude of him. He laughed for a while before he finally got serious and said, ‘No, he’s not.’

‘How do you know?’ I asked, annoyed with his whole attitude.

Love, if Harry was cheating, I would know, and you would know, too, because, I would have already broken his nose.’

Liam went on, ‘I made a promise to Harry the day before he married you. I promised him I would stop chasing after you, but I told him that if he ever cheated on you, I’d break his nose.’

‘Why am I only hearing about this now?’ I asked, blinking in surprise.

We didn’t want to upset you,’ Liam replied. But I’m telling you all this now to make you understand that Harry’s not cheating. And if he ever does, I’ll make him regret it. I promise. He took you away from me and he has to deal with the consequences now.’

‘Liam, I …’ I began but hushed. I didn’t know what to say. If I said, thank you, it wouldn’t be enough, and if I said, I love you, it could be catastrophic, for all of us. So, I stayed silent.

Liam sighed before he told me, ‘It’s okay, Bessie, you don’t have to say anything.’

Then, I heard Danielle calling him, ‘Dinner’s ready, baby.’

And at that, in the split of a second, my protective, cuddly bear Liam, which I loved so much and had missed, turned into my just good friend Liam. He said, ‘I have to go now. Talk to you later, yeah?’ And then, he hung up. Just like that. I sighed, looking at the phone, repressing my emotions. I got lost in thought, so, when my phone vibrated in my hands, I jolted. It was Harry calling.

‘Hello?’ I answered coldly because I still didn’t know what he was hiding from me.

I’ve forgotten my notebook the one with all my lyrics in it at the flat,’ Harry said on the other end of the line. ‘Bring it over to the record label, beautiful. Please? Oh, and take Emma to your mom, just in case there are paparazzi outside the building.’

I rolled my eyes. ‘Fine,’ I replied curtly, hanging up. ‘What are you up to, Harry Styles?’ I asked myself before I got up and went to get ready.

Hugging myself, I walked down the corridor towards the guys’ rehearsal room. Harry had told me to meet him there. As it was after 9 pm and also Valentine’s Day, the place was spookily dark and empty.

‘Harry?’ I called in a shaky voice after I opened the door. The room was pitch-black.

‘Turn on the lights, beautiful,’ Harry told me in his deep, raspy voice from somewhere deeper in the room and I swallowed hard. What was with all the mystery tonight?

When I turned on the lights, I gasped. Every inch of the ceiling was covered by blood red, heart shaped helium balloons and their long white strings hang over our heads. Harry was sitting on a stool in the middle of the room with Niall’s guitar on his lap and with a sweet half smile on his face. Behind him, there was a table for two. The tablecloth was the exact same color as the helium balloons, blood red, and dinner and wine were set on it. Tears gathered in my eyes at the sight of everything he had done for me.

‘Did you really think I didn’t want to spend Valentine’s Day with you?’ Harry asked with that cheeky half smile still playing on his lips. I nodded and the tears fell from my eyes. ‘Come over here, love,’ Harry cooed, begging, ‘And please don’t cry. I hate to see you cry.’ I went to him and he made me stand right in front of him. ‘I’ve written a song for you,’ he said, touching my cheek. He wiped my tears away with his thumb. He went on, ‘And Niall taught me how to play it on his guitar. Do you want to hear it?’

I nodded again, because, at that moment, a lump burned in the back of my throat and I couldn’t form any words at all. Harry began singing his song for me and I went behind him, wrapped my arms around his stomach and rubbed my nose against his neck, inhaling his cologne deeply. He chuckled but went on singing. When the song was over, Harry looked over his shoulder at me. ‘Did you like it?’ he asked, anxious and nervous.

‘It was beautiful,’ I replied and Harry let out a sigh of relief. He got up, put Niall’s guitar aside, stood opposite me and put his hands on either side of my stomach, pulling me closer. ‘I can’t believe you went through all this trouble for me,’ I said, looking at him from under my eyebrows.

Harry pulled his eyebrows into a frown. ‘Are you kidding me?’ he asked. He looked surprised that I had said that. He went on, ‘You deserve all of it and a lot more.’

I pressed my forehead against his chest, feeling pretty guilty right now. ‘I can’t believe I thought you were cheating,’ I confessed sheepishly. Harry grabbed my face, lifting my head up to him.

‘You thought I was cheating!?’ he asked in disbelief. He was all upset now. ‘Why?’ he asked, doing his best to control his temper.

‘You were acting a little strange lately, so, um, you know…’ I trailed.

‘So, naturally, being you, you assumed that I was cheating. Thanks for the vote of trust, beautiful,’ Harry said, disappointed.

‘How can I make it up to you?’ I asked, nuzzling his neck. I felt too guilty to face him.

‘Oh, I have something in mind,’ Harry murmured over my head, twirling a lock of my hair in his long fingers. I looked up at him. An impish grin was plastered on his face. ‘But let’s have dinner first,’ he said, serious. ‘I want you to eat before we do anything else.’ At those words of his, I blushed and he chuckled, leaning in. When he pressed his lips against mine, kissing me tenderly, my heart raced and I knew then that Harry would never cheat on me.
