23. Liam’s Wedding 2 - I Will Love You Forever

Next morning, was Liam’s wedding. Argh! I mean, pfft, whatever, I didn’t care. It was nine in the morning, but I was already in my hot pink bridesmaid dress with its matching hot pink high heels. My hair was in a breaded updo. I was applying lipstick in front of the mirror when Harry walked out of the bathroom with a towel hanging around his hips and running his hands through his wet hair. I swallowed with difficulty, staring at him through the mirror. I never got enough of him. Never.

Harry hugged me from behind, bowed his head and breathed against my neck. ‘You look like a hot marshmallow,’ he whispered, kissing me behind the ear. ‘You look good enough to eat,’ he said, gently biting my neck, and my legs turned to jelly. I had spent two whole hours getting ready, but I would let him take me to bed in a heartbeat. But there were a few knocks on the door before Louis and Niall walked in our hotel room.

‘Morning,’ Louis said with a smile and putting his hands in his trousers’ pockets. Niall was eating a croissant and his mouth was way too full to speak, so, he sent us a nod instead. The two boys were already in their best men suits.

‘Bad timing,’ Harry told them, adding with a grin, ‘Get out and come back in fifteen minutes.’

Louis rolled his eyes, while Niall choked when he tried to laugh.

‘That’s really romantic, baby,’ I told Harry ironically. ‘But you have to get ready.’

Harry let out a heavy sigh. ‘Fine,’ he mumbled, half irritably, half dully, letting me go. Harry put on the grey trousers, grey socks, black shoes and white shirt. Then, I moved closer and buttoned up his shirt, while he buckled his grey belt, staring at my face. After he put on the grey vest and rolled the sleeves of his shirt up to his elbows, he was ready.

‘Come on, mate,’ Louis said. ‘Liam wants us to go check something at the church.’

Harry nodded, but kissed my forehead, cheek and mouth, before he followed Louis and Liam out of the room. I shook my head, smiling, before I added a few finishing touches to my makeup and left the room, too. One of the most important duties of a bridesmaid is to provide plenty of emotional support to the bride, so, I headed to Danielle’s room, but Zayn met me halfway.

‘Morning, Bess,’ Zayn said. He looked and sounded worried. He was wearing his best man suit, too.

‘Morning, Zayn,’ I replied, smiling.

Zayn cleared his throat, lowered his voice and told me, ‘The groom wants to see you.’ I swallowed with difficulty and stayed silent. In all honesty, I wanted to see Liam only after he’d be a married guy and not a second before. Zayn went on, ‘Liam says he remembers what he did last night and he feels really guilty. He wants to talk to you.’

‘Did he tell you what he did?’ I asked.

Zayn shook his head. ‘Nope. His lips are sealed.’ I sighed and he said, ‘Come on, let’s go.’ We walked side by side and in silence toward Niall’s hotel room. Liam had gone there to get ready. When we reached it, Zayn touched the doorknob, but before he opened, he looked at me and said, ‘You two better not do anything that can’t be fixed.’ He had warned me for everybody’s sake and I nodded. Then, I went inside.

Liam was sitting on the end of the bed with his legs apart, his elbows on his knees and his head forward. He was tapping one foot nervously on the floor and was staring at an insignificant spot on the carpet, but when I walked inside, he lifted his eyes up, fixing them on me. He got up, I moved closer, and he breathed fast. He was wearing his grey groom suit and he looked really really good.

‘What is it, Liam? What’s wrong?’ I asked, pinning my arms to my sides, restraining myself from putting my hands on his stomach. I couldn’t see him upset like that. I wanted to touch him and relieve him somehow.

‘I kissed you last night, didn’t I?’ Liam asked in full frustration and when I nodded, he ran his hands through his short brown hair, cursing himself under his breath.

‘You wrote me a note, too,’ I told him.

‘I wrote you a note?’ Liam asked, confused. I nodded, opened my clutch bag and handed it to him. He took it, read it quickly and then, he fixed his caramel eyes on me again. ‘You carry this with you?’ he asked, reading into it more than he should.

‘I don’t want Harry to find it,’ I replied.

‘Yeah, yeah, you’re right,’ Liam said, rubbing his forehead. ‘I’m so sorry, Bessie. I really am. I told the boys not to let me drink last night, but they thought I was kidding.’

‘It’s fine. I understand. You were drunk,’ I said, shrugging. Liam shook his head, disappointed at himself, and turned his note into a paper ball, but before he threw it away, I stopped him. ‘Don’t!’ I cried, folding my fingers around his wrist.

Liam stared at me. His big brown eyes softened and his voice softened, too, when he asked, ‘You want to keep it?’

‘It reminds me of you, of what we used to have,’ I replied, shrugging again.

‘I love Danielle,’ Liam told me, handing me the note back.

‘And I love Harry to pieces,’ I told him, putting the note safely back in my clutch bag. ‘I always have and I always will.’

‘But I will love you forever, love,’ Liam said, sighing.

‘I will love you forever, too, cuddly bear,’ I replied, smiling. Then, we hugged, molding our bodies together. We didn’t kiss, we shouldn’t, but we hugged for a good while, until Zayn knocked on the door, opening it.

‘Bess, Danielle and all the other bridesmaids are looking for you,’ Zayn told me.

‘Okay,’ I nodded, getting out of Liam’s arms. I looked at my cuddly bear and sighed, smiling. ‘I’ll see you out there, then,’ I told him, walking away.

‘Wow. I can’t believe I’m getting married,’ Liam said, half excited, half nervous.

‘Yes, you are,’ I told him over my shoulder, leaving the room.

After the ceremony, we all gathered at the outdoor reception venue. Liam and Danielle cut their wedding cake, they had their first dance as a married couple and then, Harry, Louis, Niall and Zayn made their toasts.

And then, Harry led me to the dance floor. We put our arms around each other and we slow danced, swaying to Truly, Madly, Deeply. I buried my face into Harry’s warm neck, while he sang softly over my head, breathing into my hair, ‘Am I asleep, am I awake, or, somewhere in between, I can’t believe that you’re here and lying next to me, or, did I dream that we were perfectly entwined, like branches on a tree, or, twigs caught on a vine…’

When I pulled back to look at him, Harry smiled sweetly at me. ‘Do you think that our love will last forever?’ I asked and was maybe a little too emotional while I did.

‘Of course, beautiful,’ Harry told me, simply, yet sincerely, and then, he leaned in. He pressed his full, soft lips against mine, kissing me gently and slowly for a moment, before he deepened the kiss, turning even more passionate. By the time we pulled away from each other, the song had ended and Little Things was playing.

‘How do you imagine us in fifteen years from now?’ I asked when we continued slow dancing.

Harry shrugged, but then, he stuck his lower lip out, furrowed his brow and got lost in thought for a moment. I studied his handsome face, smiling. Then, he set his piercing green eyes in mine and said, ‘I think we should renew our vows in fifteen years.’ I nodded and got his neck, bringing his face closer to mine. As Harry and I locked lips again, all the boys danced with their dates around us. Liam was dancing with Danielle, Louis with Eleanor, Zayn with Perrie, while Niall was dancing both with Emma and Sophie. Liam’s wedding turned out to be a wonderful day after all.
