19. Jealousy

Liam proposed to Danielle the very night the boys returned to the UK and she said yes! Of course she said yes! Liam and Danielle loved each other to pieces and they were headed to a happily ever after. But they had to go over a few bumps in the road first, which shockingly had my name written all over them. I didn’t mean to cause them any trouble, honest, but things happen, you know. Here’s what happened when Liam and Danielle invited everyone for dinner a few nights after the proposal.

The restaurant was crowded but Liam and Danielle had reserved one of the best tables in it. It was a round table and it was easier to talk with everyone. I was sitting between Harry and Liam, Danielle was sitting next to her fiancé, and Louis, Eleanor, Niall and Zayn were sitting opposite us. Perrie wasn’t feeling very well because of pregnancy sickness and didn’t come.

After we ordered, Harry put his one hand at the back of my chair and his other on my belly, which was a small bump now as I was three months pregnant. He nuzzled into my hair, burying his head into my neck. When he melted his soft lips into my neck, caressing my belly, I closed my eyes, running my hand through his curls. Liam cleared his throat and I was dragged back into reality. I opened my eyes and noticed that almost every person in the restaurant was staring at us. A few of them were even taking pictures.

‘Harry,’ I breathed, panicking, but he didn’t pull away. Instead, he ran his tongue up to my ear, kissing my earlobe. ‘Harry!’ I cried, curling my fingers into his hair.

Harry chuckled. ‘What, beautiful? What’s wrong?’ he teased, stroking his thumb on my bellybutton.

‘Everybody’s looking at us,’ I whispered.

‘I don’t care,’ Harry murmured into my ear.

‘But I do,’ I said strictly. Harry sighed, pulling away. He sat back on his chair, frowning and pouting, because, I had just rained on his parade. I shook my head. He was such a baby sometimes.

Eleanor hit Louis on the shoulder, taking everyone’s attention.

‘What was that for?’ Louis complained, rubbing his shoulder.

‘How come you never do things like that to me in public?’ Eleanor demanded.

‘Because we’re in public,’ Louis replied irritably, emphasizing the last two words. Eleanor huffed, folded her arms and looked the other way.

Harry touched the back of my neck, gently squeezing it a little bit, and I smiled at him, but when Liam put his hand on my knee, I turned to him. His caramel eyes locked with mine. ‘I heard that today was your first ultrasound. How was it?’ he asked, smiling sweetly.

I smiled big, getting all excited. ‘Do you want to see some pictures?’

Liam chuckled. ‘Sure.’ I noticed Danielle staring at her fiancé’s hand, which was still settled on my knee. She looked worried but I ignored her and showed Liam the sonogram pictures I had on my phone. The moment Liam saw the little unborn baby, his eyes softened and he looked at it with so much adoration.

‘Isn’t he perfect?’ I asked, putting my hand over his. Danielle saw and shifted in her seat.

‘He?’ Liam asked, looking into my eyes.

I nodded and Harry wrapped his arms around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder. ‘It’s a boy, mate,’ he said with a cheeky grin.

‘Congratulations, Haz,’ Liam said before he let out a heavy sigh, locking his eyes to my face. Both Harry and Danielle noticed. Harry cleared his throat, pulling me away, and Danielle asked Liam to help her with something.

During dinner, Liam and I talked about practically everything, songs, lyrics, films and love. Then, he told me a few of his favorite jokes, which he had told me before, but I let him say them again anyway, while I studied his face, smiling. Ironically, we even talked about his upcoming wedding. Harry was awfully quiet throughout my little bonding session with Liam, while Danielle attempted to grab her fiancé’s attention a few times but failed. Everyone at the table noticed that Liam and I had been talking all night long, pretty much ignoring Harry and Danielle, and they braced themselves for a possible fight. But that didn’t happen. After dessert, we all said goodnight to each other and headed home.

The minute we returned to the flat, Harry said, ‘If you weren’t pregnant, I would spank you for your behavior tonight.’

I froze in place. I had my back to him and we hadn’t turned on the lights yet. I took my heels off and pledged ignorance. ‘What was wrong with my behavior tonight?’ I asked.

Harry sighed and came up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist. He pressed himself against my back, pulling my hair to one side. ‘I know how stubborn you are, so, I’m patient with you,’ he said, grazing his lips along my neck and shoulder. ‘But don’t you think you might have hurt Danielle’s feelings by monopolizing Liam tonight?’

Well, good, I thought. ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about. Liam and I were only talking,’ I replied innocently.

Harry set both of his big hands on my belly and said, breathing into my ear, ‘I think you’ve proven your point loud and clear tonight, beautiful. Danielle’s not the only girl Liam cares about. But he’s getting married in a few months and I know you care about him a little too much to ruin this for him. So, don’t show your claws again.’

‘How about after the wedding?’ I asked. ‘Can I show my claws then?’

Harry chuckled before he turned serious. ‘I don’t like it that you’re more overprotective of him than you are of me.’

I turned round and put my hands on his neck, drawing our faces close together. Harry put his hands on either side of my hips, pressed his forehead against mine and closed his eyes. ‘Every time a girl ogles you,’ I began, playing with the ringlets at the back of his neck. ‘I feel like scratching her across the face but if any girl is stupid enough to get too close to you be prepared to pull me out of a catfight.’

‘That’s better,’ Harry murmured with a little grin and with eyes still closed. There was a knock on the door and Harry gave me a peck on the mouth before he went to open. It was past midnight, so, I wondered who it could be, but when Liam and Danielle came in, arguing, I felt kind of sick. I kind of knew I was the cause of that and I guess it was confrontation o’clock now. I swallowed with difficulty when Harry shot me a little glare, shaking his head. Liam looked frustrated and Danielle had tears in her eyes.

‘Bess,’ Liam called loudly and I jolted. All three pair of eyes stared at me and I felt like a deer in the headlights.

‘Yes?’ I said sheepishly.

Please tell Dani that there’s nothing going on between you and me anymore, that we’re only good friends now,’ Liam practically begged and I winced. Yup, I was the cause of all this, positively sure of it now. I looked at Danielle, who was looking at me with tears rolling down her cheeks and was waiting for me to tell her that her fairytale would have its happy ending.

‘There’s nothing going on between me and Liam. We’re only good friends,’ I repeated Liam’s words, nervously fidgeting with my fingers. I felt horrible for what I had done now.

Danielle’s face brightened in seconds. She wiped away her tears before she walked towards me and grabbed my shoulders. ‘Thank you,’ she said sincerely, adding, ‘I’d love it if you were one of my bridesmaids!’

I blinked. ‘You want me to be one of your bridesmaids after what I did tonight?’ I asked surprised.

Danielle shrugged. ‘You were jealous, I get it. I was jealous, too.’

‘Oh,’ I replied, starting to realize that maybe just maybe I had misjudged her. Then, I said, a little too excited, ‘I’d love to be one of your bridesmaids!’ When Danielle squealed and hugged me, my eyes met Liam’s. He was smiling at me from behind his fiancée. And so order was restored to the world.

After they left, Harry caught me by surprise when he picked me up. His one arm was behind my back and his other was under my thighs. ‘You did good, beautiful,’ he said, kissing my forehead, carrying me to the bedroom. I pouted and quickly folded my arms around his neck, burying my head into it, so, Harry wouldn't see. If I did so well, I thought, then, why was I still feeling kind of sad that Liam was getting married to another girl?
