My life has been filled with promises, promises that couldn't be kept.
Being abused caused me to stay mute..
But can he change that?

29. Come home with us, me.

Niall's POV

"You said you were going to go. Where to exactly?" I asked hastily. Jai played with her feet even though her eyes were on me. "I was going to go home. Where else?" I clenched my fists then let them go, "You can't go back there. I won't let you." I said looking back to the boys for back up. "Niall has a point. You can't go back there." Liam said, shoving his hands into his pocket. Jai bit her lip ever so softly I just wanted to, just wanted too. I couldn't, I looked away from her face. "Come back home," I faced her. We were really close. I could've just closed the distance between us, grabbed her gentle face and kissed her soft, moist lips. "With us. To our home." She ran a hand through her hair, "Brent's condition is serious. I'll go back with you but I'm coming back tomorrow." Her smile, not that it was big but it was perfect for her face, faded and it was just in a tight straight line. "I'll bring you back tomorrow, I promise. It's late come on." I slid my arm around her shoulder and kissed her head. She giggled; I shivered, smiled and ignored the goosebumps forming on my arm. Every time she talks or even looks at me it makes me go crazy. "What was that for?" She asked as we followed the boys outside. "What was what for?" I asked back trying to avoid her question. "Don't do that. You know what i'm talking about." I smirked down at her, "I just missed you so much. That's what."

I tossed and turned every which way. I couldn't find a comfortable spot to be able to sleep in. With Jailene in the other room it took all of my force to not get up and climb into her bed with her. I sighed and looked up at the ceiling. "Brent!" I shot up at the sound of Jailene screaming. I shuffled on my feet and ran to her room. I yanked open the door and saw that she was sitting up, head in her hands, choking on her sobs. "Jai," I said in one full breath, "What's wrong?" I made my way to her bed and rubbed her back. "N-niall..." Her eyes wet as she looked up at me. I sat down on her bed bringing her to me, wrapping my arms around her as she leaned into me. "It's my fault." She stopped and tried to clear her voice so I could understand. "He's hurt because of me." I shook my head and sat back against the bed frame, "No, it's not. Don't say that. It's not your fault." She adjusted herself, laying her head and hand on my chest. "Why would he do that to him?" she was referring to Brent and her father. I had a theory that maybe was true, maybe wasn't. Brent popped out of nowhere one day, at our doorstep and took away Jai from us, her father had to find out where she was somehow. But I didn't want to tell her that. She's crying over his condition and as much as I'd like to tell her truth, I can't, I won't. Soon after she fell asleep. I never did answer her question, maybe it wasn't meant to be answered. I ran a hand through her hair. I wanted this, but not like this, not with this reason. She missed Brent and I missed her. I wasn't Brent but I will show her that I'm way better than him.

I opened my eyes because I was feeling gazed at. I yawned and stretched and I hit the bed frame. "Good morning Niall." I looked up at Liam. "Yeah, good morning." I sat up and someone shifted as I did so. I looked down at Jai, "Shit." I said as I looked up at Liam again. I had spent the night with Jailene in my arms. I wanted to smile, heck I was already smiling, but Liam's mind can wonder. I laid her on her bed as I got up, pulled the blanket over her and motioned for us to leave her room. Once we were outside and down the stairs Liam let loose. "What were you doing in her room? With your hands all over her?" I bit my lip as I grinned, "Don't be jealous now." "I'm not," He snapped back, then lightened the mood with a smile, "I was just curious. She seemed to have no idea that you were there." She was asleep, how can he tell? "Why were you in there too?" I basically asked his same question, only worded differently. "I went to go check up on you. When I noticed that you weren't in your room I went to Jailene's thinking you guys were talking or something. But I see you cuddling her and asleep so." he shrugged and I laughed a bit, it was a cruel laugh but I couldn't control it. "It's not what you think," I began, "She screamed in the middle of the night. I went to comfort her and I guess we both fell asleep." There was an awkward silence. I knew what he wanted to ask but maybe he was waiting for me to say it because when I didn't he said, "You saw what everyone else saw, Niall. She was kissing him. So call me crazy but I think Brent and Jailene have a thing?" Those words were like a slap in the face. I didn't want to think about them together. Not after I had my arms around her while she slept soundly. "I know. I know," I said sighing as I put my arm on my neck, "But it's a fair game. I'm not going to stop trying."

Jailene's POV

I pushed open the doors of the hospital and smiled at the lady at the front desk, "Brent Collins?" She asked and I nodded. "That's one fine looking boyfriend you got there." She told me as we made our way through the hallways. I smiled at her, "Thank you." I could feel my face get hot. "He was moved to a more comfortable room requests of his mother." I looked in the rooms and most of them were empty. We got to the end of the hallway, my heart was beating a mile a minute. "He's still unconscious but maybe you can help his condition." I looked in the room and saw Brent. I bit my lip and then smiled at Lilla who was asleep in the chair next to his bed. I looked around for Benry and Mike but I didn't see them. "If you need anything," she turned to walk away, "You know where to find me." She smiled and left. I walked in and focused my gaze on Brent for a minute. I wanted to be alone with him so I might as well give Lilla a break. I patted her shoulder, "Lilla?" I whispered. She shifted and looked up at me, "Oh Jailene!" She got up, "You're here!" I smiled back at her, "Of course I promised I would be. Where's the kids?" I asked. "Oh Jordan picked them up last night when he came to check up on Brent." Her voice was soft. I haven't seen Jordan in years, I wonder how he is. "How is Mr.Collins?" I asked as I picked up Benry's and Mike's cars from the floor. "You know he always scolds you for calling him Mr.Collins!" She laughed as she said it, "Jordan's fine. Work has him all crazy. But he's taking a break because of well." She jerked her head towards Brent, who hasn't moved since I came. I sighed, "I really wish he wasn't in a coma." It came out a whisper barely audible. I sat down on the edge of the bed. "Jailene, do you mind if I ask you something?" I shook my head, "No, it's fine." Lilla bit her lip and stared at me, "When Brent first met you it was all about the girl in the park. He-" she stopped and caressed his hair, "would beg for us to take him to the park, saying 'She's going to leave if we don't hurry!' " I laughed at the thought of him saying that to them. "Years after years we would see you everyday with him and when we didn't he always had a story about you." I sighed as tears brimmed in my eyes. Why did this have to happen to him? "Then all of a sudden he just stopped. We would ask about you and all you can see was the hurt in his eyes. We all thought you two got into a fight that lasted 3 or 4 years because his smile was suddenly different." I looked at Brent's soft expression, "He started talking about you again." That must be recently. She paused as if trying to gather up the courage to continue on. "What happened in that time when you guys didn't talk?" I could feel her gaze on me. I could hear my heart pumping in my ears. I trusted Lilla, I always have. She and my mother always got along. I swallowed hard as a lump gathered in my throat, "I didn't go to school anymore after..." I trailed off and Lilla nodded, indicating that she knew what I was talking about. "I stayed at home all the time. I never left. I just lost all contact with him." I wasn't going to tell her that Brent had ignored me all of middle school and our first year of high school. She didn't need to know that. She nodded, "Do you mind if I go? I have to make dinner for the kids. I'll be back to take the night shift?" I smiled and nodded as I slipped my hand into Brent's. Lilla grabbed her bag and made her way to the door, stopping abruptly, "Oh Jailene?" I jerked my head up and looked at her, "If you need anything, anywhere to stay, or just someone to talk to. I'm here for you sweetie, okay?" Her smile was sincere almost like my mothers, "Thank you."

"Do you know you," I laughed as Brent was doing push ups on the gym floor. "Have the stamina of a girl." I pressed on as I stared at him practice for soccer. "Your stamina or an actual girl?" He asked back in huffs. "Oh very funny." I rolled my eyes playfully. He grunted as he lay flat on the ground, "I know I'm very funny. Thank you for your words of encouragement." I laughed as I put on my shoes, which he untied again. "Hey!" I yelled as I swat his hand away, "Let me put on my shoes!" He smirked, "Let me think about it," he put a finger to his chin, "No." He slipped off my shoe and threw it across the field. I glared at him and crossed my arms, "You're going to go get that." I snapped at him, trying to sound mean. "No need for it." He pulled out a box that was wrapped horribly, "Mum wanted to wrap it but I didn't let her. It looked so much better in my head." He bit his lip. My eyes widened as he laid the box in my hands. "Happy birthday Jailene." I thought he had forgotten about it, but this was his plan. "But you still have to get me my shoe back." I pointed to where it landed. "I'll get it later! Can you open the box now? I'm pretty sure you'll like it." I did as he said and opened it. Just as I was about to open the box to reveal what was inside, I couldn't. There was about 20 pieces of tape on each side of the rectangular box, "Was this much tape really necessary?" I asked keeping my focus on trying to rip the tape away. I glanced at Brent, who wasn't there anymore. I looked up and saw him walking towards my shoe. I smiled and continued trying to pry open the thing. "Still not done?" Brent's voice filled my head as his hand hovered over mine helping me open the damn thing. I gasped when we finally did open it,"Brent they're." I smiled at him, "Amazing!" I stood up and threw myself to him. He caught me and embraced me, "Like I said, Happy birthday!" I turned 13 that year. It was the year that everything changed for me.
