That One Mistake

I actually wrote this a while back. Just thought I'd post it to see what people thought and maybe I'll continue, depending. Hope you enjoy it (:

I had everything- the looks, the grades, the friends, the boy, everything. But one insecure thought and... It's all gone in the blink of an eye. I've got to get it all back, but how? Hmm. Let's go over what happened one more time...

1. Let's Explain

FML. Everything was going perfect, but then I saw what had really been going on. And now it kills me to see him. I have to fix it somehow. Let’s go over what happened.

I was walking with my friend Heavenly to go talk to Jared about his friend Tyler. What happened was, Tyler asked out Heavenly again, and she wanted to say yes, but she’s against middle school dating. So once again, she told him no. So, being the jerk he is, he got mad at her. That’s why she and Jared were talking, so he could get Tyler’s head on straight.

Just to add to the detail, we go to Vaca Peña Middle School, Vacaville, California. Outside of our school, we walk up behind Jared and Dom, another one of Jared’s friends. Heavenly calls, “Jared!” They both turn to look at us then stop walking. We catch up and she says, “I need to talk to you about Tyler.”

Jared looks at me and Dom and says, “You guys should leave.” Even though I already knew what was going on, I walked with Dom around the corner of the gym to sit and wait.

I’m a very shy person when I’m with someone I don’t know too well, or a guy. I get extremely nervous. It’s even worse when I’m stuck alone with the guy I like, just like right now. We walked in silence and my heart beat slowly sped up. I wanted to ask him ‘How can you not hear that?’ but then he’d just think I was weird. I turned to look at him and was surprised to see him looking nervous.

“Hey, are you okay?” I asked him.

     “Yeah… I just… can I ask you a question?”

There was a long silence then he took a deep breath and said “Do you want to go out with me?” For a second all I could do was stare at him. I had liked him for how long? Like Heavenly, I’m against middle school dating. But I had decided that if the perfect guy ever asked me out, I’d say yes. He was cute, sweet, semi-popular, didn't cuss too much, and knew what he wanted to do with his life.

I eventually realized he was waiting for an answer. “Really?” was all I said. He nodded. “Why?”

He was obviously caught off guard. “Well you’re… pretty, nice, smart…” his words slowly faded. “So…?” I could tell the suspense was killing him.

“Definitely,” I said with a smile. “So…” I said, getting more comfortable and scooting closer. “Why do you really want to go out with me?”

The atmosphere around us had changed. Before I knew it we were talking like friends who hadn’t seen each other in years. All of a sudden I was right next to him, my shoulder to his. We sat there flirting for what seemed like hours, but in reality were only minutes. Then something about him changed. He got peculiar, talking like he had his foot in his mouth. Without thinking I sat on his lap and shushed him. Before I could count to three, we were kissing.

My arms were around his neck, his around my waist. We sat there alone for who knows how long. The next thing I hear is:

We push away from each other with guilt in our eyes as Heavenly and Jared look down on us. I can feel my face turning bright red as I saw their shock-stricken faces. “Heavenly, we should go,” I say as I stand up, grab my bag and start walking away. She looks at the two guys and runs after me.

“You’re staying with me tonight.” She hands me her phone so I can call and make sure it’s okay with my parents. Behind us, Jared is doing the same with Dom.

We walk in silence from the time we rush to my house to pack a bag, and say nothing until we run into her room and jump on her bed. I’ve always loved her bedroom, with its light purple walls, matching comforter with swirls and fuzzy round pillows. We stare for a second before she explodes.

“What was going on back there?!” She yells.

“Well….” I’m not sure of what to say. Her face reads impatience as I say nothing. “So we got there and he asked me out. Then…” I got into the story, avoiding flirtatious details that would make her laugh.

“OH. MY. GOSH!” She has totally flipped out. “I cannot believe you!  I thought you were against dating?” She questioned me.

“You know I said I would only date unless he’s my perfect guy. And gosh… Is he ever!”

“So what are you going to do?” she asked me.

“I guess we’re going to go out as planned. See what happens from there.”
