Jump In The Deep End

"Amber, nothing will be different between us." Louis said as we stood in line for his audition.

I smiled back hesitantly. "You're sure?" I asked him. "You won't forget about me when you're famous?"

"I could never forget about you. I promise." He said, flashing a grin at me.

Amber Michaels is just a normal girl. Her best friend, however, is NOT just a normal guy. He's Louis Tomlinson, from the infamous boyband, One Direction.

They have been best friends for years, and have gone through so much together. Through Louis' auditions for the X-Factor, to his recent break-up with longtime girlfriend, Eleanor, they talked every day. But, they had one problem:

The other four members of the band knew nothing about her. This makes it difficult for them to talk every day. Somehow, they manage.

One day, however, the boys discover their secret, and insist that Amber goes on vacation with them for the summer, and madness breaks loose.

4. Complications and Propositions

*Amber POV*

"Sooo..." I said during the long, awkward ride in Harry's car.

"Sooo..." Louis mimicked me.

I cracked a smile. "Shut up."

Harry was driving and Liam was sitting shotgun next to him. Louis and I were in the back seat, and the radio was on quietly. "Chasing the Sun" by the Wanted was playing, and I loved that song.

Harry was humming along absentmindedly, and Liam turned up the volume.

Louis started singing the song in a horrid voice, and I reached over to smack his arm.

"My ears are bleeding, Lou!" I told him.

He leaned closer and started singing louder and worse than before. "You sound worse than Rebecca Black right now!" I yelled over him, and he scowled, but continued singing in a slightly less horrid voice.

The song ended, and I asked Louis, "Do Niall and Zayn know I'm coming?"

"Nope!" He told me, sounding chipper. "But they're about to find out!" We pulled into a parking lot, and Harry and Liam muttered, "Shit."

There were at least two dozen paparazzi surrounding the front door. Harry backed out of the parking lot and parked his car down the street. Liam had sunglasses on, and Harry and Louis had beanies on. I, of course, had Louis' 'fabulous' wig. He was right. It was itchy.

We walked down an alley, and the guys knew exactly where they were going.

"This happen often?" I asked Louis quietly.

"Yep." He replied as we walked.

We turned and went through a hole at the side of the fence. We were standing at a black door, which I presumed was the back door to the building.

Liam pulled out a small silver key, and unlocked the door. There was a handicapped lift that said, 'Out of service' on the door. The guys ignored the sign and pressed the button. We stepped in once the doors opened, and waited as Louis pressed the last button, for floor 36.

We exited the lift, and walked down the narrow hallway to a door that said '36-2'. Liam unlocked the door and we stepped inside.

I marveled at the size of the flat, with it's big living room that connected to a large kitchen area. There were eight doors around the sides of the room, four on the wall to the left of the front door, three on the far wall, and one on the wall beside the kitchen.

There was a blonde boy sitting at the large granite island in the kitchen, and he looked over. I laughed, because he had a sandwich half in his mouth, half in his hands. He quickly finished his bite and came over to greet us. I took off the wig and handed it to Louis, who put it on over his beanie. I rolled my eyes.

"Lou!" He said.

He looked over at me and smiled. "I'm Niall!" He said cheerfully.

I grinned back. "I'm Amber."

He turned around. "Zayn! We've got company!"

A few seconds later, a tall, dark haired boy came out of one of the rooms. He walked over to me and smiled shyly. "I'm Zayn."

"Amber." I told him.

"So what brings you here, Amber?" Niall asked.

"Erm," I said. "It's kind of a long story." I told him.

He laughed. "We got time!"

"Well," Louis started. He explained the story to Niall and Zayn, and they stared at me with the same wide eyed shock that Liam and Harry had earlier. I smiled, and Niall narrowed his blue eyes.

"How do we know this story is for real?" He asked everyone.

Liam, Harry, and Zayn all looked at each other and shrugged. "We don't." Liam said. "We just have to believe it."

Louis grinned, and pulled out his wallet. "I can prove it to yo-" I cut him off.

"No! Lou, I thought you stopped carrying around that picture!" I yelled at him.

He smiled wickedly. "Why would I ever do that?" He asked.

I glared at him. "Put. It. Away. Now."

"What picture?" Harry asked.

"Hold her back!" Louis said to no one in particular. Zayn put his arms around me and held me so I couldn't move.

"Sorry," Zayn said next to me. "But we're all curious."

Louis pulled out the picture, and I hung my head. That was the absolute worst picture of me and him ever taken. His mom had snapped it at his 12th birthday party, and I was nine.

Zayn let me go. The boys all (except for Harry) burst out in hysterical laughter at the sight of my hair. When I was little, my hair used to be so terrible. It was impossible to brush, and was everywhere. It was particularly bad in the picture Louis was showing them.

Harry walked over to me. He slung his arm around me. "I feel your pain." He told me, pulling out a picture of him. "This was four years ago." He told me. In the picture, he was smiling at the camera, his dimples showing. His hair was a curly, tangled mess, and was literally everywhere.

I grinned at him. "It's good to know someone does." I told him.

Liam walked over. "You aren't harassing the poor girl, now are you, Haz?"

"Nah." Harry grinned. "I showed her the picture of me a few years ago."

Liam's eyes widened. "The one..."

"Yep." Harry chuckled. "I know what she went through."

Liam laughed. "Well, at least neither of you have hair like that anymore."

"Thank god for that." Louis said, coming over and ruffling both of our hair. Harry and I scowled at him.

"Don't touch the curls." Harry and I said at the same time.

The other lads all laughed. "Oh, my god!" Niall said in between laughs. "They're... so.... alike!"

Louis stopped laughing and walked over to sit on the couch. Niall went back to the kitchen, and the other boys trailed behind him. I followed Louis to the couch and sat beside him. He looked grumpy.

"What crawled in your trousers this morning?" I asked him, playfully butting my head against his shoulder.

"Nothing." He lied.

"Liar. You suck at lying." I told him.

"I do not!" He protested. "I'm a good liar!"

I looked at him. "No."

"Yes." He argued playfully.

"Nuh-uh." I shook my head.

"I am too!" He told me, getting up and sitting on me.

"Lou! Get off, fatty!" I yelled at him.

"Make me, loser!" He joked.

I shoved him off of me, onto the floor. He pouted like a three year old. "You're no fun."

I dove off the sofa, sitting on him. "I am loads of fun, and you know it!"

He laughed. "Sometimes."

I whacked his head. "Stupid. I'm always fun."

Someone cleared their throat, and we turned to see Harry standing in the doorway, one eyebrow raised questioningly.

Louis and I looked at each other and burst out laughing. "Your face, Hazzabear!" Louis exclaimed.

Harry rolled his eyes, smiled, and went back to the kitchen.

I pushed Louis down and lie on top of him, my back on his face.

"Mmmmhurrmppphhh?" He said.

"Huh?" I asked him.

He shoved me off him, onto the floor beside him. "I asked, are you hungry?"

"Yes." I said with a serious face.

He smiled, and got up. He held out a hand to me. "C'mon, Berry! Let's go get some food!"

I glared, and he ignored it, leading me to the kitchen.

When we walked in, everyone was gathered around the island talking in low voices. They stopped as soon as they saw Louis and I walk in.

I rolled my eyes. "Right, because that doesn't make it any more suspicious at all."

Louis laughed, and ignored the other boys.

*Liam POV*

"So what do you guys think?" I asked after Louis and Amber left the kitchen.

"I think, they are completely in love, and don't even notice it." Harry said, and we all agreed.

"D'you think they've slept together?" Niall asked, and we all hit him. "Ow!" He said, scowling.

"Don't scowl, Nialler." I told him. "It makes you look ugly."

"Lots of things make him look ugly." Zayn said, grinning.

"Zayn, I will shave your head." Niall said, giving him a death glare. Zayn's eyes widened and he held up his hands.

"Alright, I'm done." He said.

"But do you think they have?" Harry asked, his brows knitting together in confusion. He looked like he hoped not. I was more than a little bit confused by his reaction

"Dunno." I said. "Are you gonna be the one to ask?" I said, tired of talking about it.

"Nope." He said, and shut up.

"But seriously." Zayn said. "They're totally head over heels for each other."

Niall snickered. "You sound like a cheesy romance novel."

"Shut up!" I said. "They're going to hear you."

Harry interjected. "They already know we're talking about them."

"Yeah, but they don't know what we're saying!" I protest.

"Yes, we do!" Came a chorus from the living room.

"Fuck." I put my head on the table as Niall snickered and walked to the fridge to get food.

*Louis POV*

Amber and I sat on the couch, trying not to crack up at the things they were saying. "They totally do not get the whole 'just friends' thing." I whispered.

"Definitely not." She agreed.

The lads walked into the room, and I knew they meant business. I tried to be serious, and Harry cracked a smile at my attempt.

Harry sat next to me on the sofa, and Zayn sat next to him. Niall and Liam took the chairs near the couch.

"So." Liam started. "The lads and I talked."

"We know." I giggled. "We heard."

"We whispered this part." Harry said beside me.

"We decided that it would be a good idea to ask Amber to come on vacation with us. After all, we are taking the whole summer off and travelling to different beaches around the world."

My eyes widened, and I knew Amber wouldn't like that idea, because of the paps.

I looked over at her, and her eyes were wide, her lips pressed tightly in a line.

"I would really like to, but..." She trailed off.

"Paparazzi." I finished for her, and she nodded.

Liam continued. "We have a whole bunch of beaches booked for certain weeks all summer." He explained to her. "There's no way any paparazzi would be able to get to you. I asked Paul, and-"

"When did you talk to Paul about this?" I asked.

"This was a few days ago. Anyway, he assured me that there would be security everywhere, plus the locations are very private and would not be revealed to fans."

She smiled slightly. "Well, it would be nice to get away from home for a while..."

A huge grin lit up my face. "Are you coming with us?"

She grinned back. "Why not?"
