I was here! Madison square garden! I still couldn´t believe my parents had paid this trip for me! Best present ever! I was going to see ED SHEERAN!!! My second biggest idol after one direction. And not just see him! But at Madison square garden!!! And…FRONT ROW!!! I was so about to die…I was dressed in a strapless black dress and a pair of white converse. Heels wasn´t really my thing…I think I looked pretty ok. I didn´t wore much make-up. Just a bit of mascara and lip gloss.

I was going to the concert alone. One week ago I didn’t even have tickets…I had failed to get any when they were released since they were sold out so fast. I have to admit I kind of gave up. But then my birthday came! And yeah…You can probably guess the rest… My dad got me tickets. He knew someone from work who knew Ed! And he helped my dad getting first row tickets!!! I´m not going to tell you about my reaction because that would take too much time and also you don´t need to hear the details about my crazy fangirling…So I took a plane to New York four days after my birthday and here I was…I had taken a cab from the hotel which was on times square.

The clock was now 6.30pm. The concert started at 8pm and the doors to the arena opened at 7pm. I was ready!!!

As the doors opened all the people waiting outside the arena ran to get in. I walked slowly though, since it wouldn´t be that fun to stand and do nothing for an hour…

The arena was giant! I thought it would be big, but not THIS big!!!  Now it felt even more unreal that my dad managed to get front row tickets…Like, it was so many people here to watch Ed!!!

I found my place at the front. It was great! Even better than I thought. I stood right before the stage. Maybe Ed would notice me?  The security stood ready in front of me.

Just as I noticed this I heard a voice coming from the speakers.

-Ed is coming!!!

-OMG!!!

-This is so crazy!!!

Judging from the voices behind me Ed was on his way.

-10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0!!!

As I heard the last number being screamed out I could see Ed coming from the side. I heard a beating, like from a heart, coming from the speakers all over the arena. Ed had brought an acoustic guitar with him. Wow! This would be absolutely perfect!

-Hello…

Screams came from everywhere. I could barely hear myself thinking. The crowd didn´t really get calmer when you could hear the first chords of “Give me love”. But when Ed started singing people got quiet. This guy really sang like an angel. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOjdXSrtUxA )

I didn´t really hear more of the lyrics. I found myself just relaxing more and more…

-No, I just wanna hold ya…!

This was like a dream. I never realised how much this song meant to me. Not until now. I kept on listening. When the song was over I felt a bit sad…The crowd went crazy! Applauds could be heard from every little corner of the arena. It wasn´t only me who connected to this song…

-Hello everyone! I´m Ed!

The crowd screamed.

-My job for the next hour and a half is to entertain you…

I couldn´t hear more of what he said. But he must´ve said something that we should repeat since everyone started screaming the same thing…

-Can you guys be my gospel choir tonight? I´m up alone on the stage. You guys need to be my gospel choir! Let´s see if you can sing. Sing with me: ooooooooooooooooh…

-OOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!!

-Sounds great. You will be my gospel choir for the evening. I want everyone to be involved! Let´s split up in the middle. Just remember your places. The front here…

He pointed at the side where I stood…

-…the middle and the back; you are the lower harmony. And you on the front here, middle and the back…

He ran over the stage and pointed at the other side of the arena.

-…you sing the higher harmony. You sing whatever I teach you too sing. No one stops! OK?

-OK!!!!!

-Lower harmony repeat after me…

And so it kept on going…Ed sang first and we repeated. It actually sounded great. Now we all sang to give me love. With Ed in the lead.

-Hands in the air!!!

Everybody put their hands in the air and Ed finished the song by making a heart with his.

-How ya´ll doing today?!

*screams*

He then told us a story about the last time he was here. At MSG. It was kind of funny and everybody seemed to get more energy.

-So…Thank you everyone for getting tickets. And thanks for coming! Over the night there´s going to be different songs. Songs where I want you to scream and shout and songs where we can just chill out. And songs that are kind of in the middle. If you don´t know the words to all the songs just make something up! As long as you sing I’m happy. Something I need from you is volume. Sing in volume! Time for a bit of warm up! Say…

Everybody repeated what Ed just sang. This was so much fun! What we didn´t expect was that this “warm up” really was a kind of beginning to “drunk”… (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2fOum_KWQU )

Once again everybody went crazy. Ed sang really fast in this song which sounded great live!

-I wanna be drunk when I wake up, on the right side of the wrong bed…

There was a green light behind him. It added a bit of “action” to the song.

-Maybe i´ll get, SCREAM IT OUT, drunk again…

This was one of my favorite songs by Ed. I didn´t want it to end, but of course it had too…

He started to play the next song right away; Homeless… (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmbUVuXlv2I ) I didn´t listen that often to this song which made it interesting to hear it live. I listened and felt how I started moving to the music at my place.

-Gospel choir! You ready? Repeat after me! It´s not a homeless life for me…

He started singing U.N.I. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivqqkaGRGp0 ) He sang so fast. It was impressing.

-That´s why you and I ended over U.N.I, and I said that´s fine…

I enjoyed the song. It sounded cool live with its fast verse and slower chorus. The crowd seemed to have really fun. And so did I. He told us to sing and we did!

After he ended this song he started singing “grade 8” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDf3kWgbOmE ). This was another of my favorites.

-You´re strumming on my heart strings like you were a grade 8…

 Suddenly Ed started singing something I’ve never heard before. He just made up a text in the moment. He was so talented! And as fast as he started he stopped and started singing the chorus again. Like it never happened! Weird…But I loved it!!!

Suddenly he looked at me. And started singing another chorus. Ed sang to me!!! Me!!! OMG!!! This was a dream coming true!!! He then finished the song still looking at me. I was going to faint.

His voice and the lyrics=perfect mix!!! And then the acoustic guitar…I’m not even going to talk about it…

WOW!!! That was the best song so far!

He played a bit on the guitar. Probably to find the right sound.

-Ok, now I only need one thing…For you to scream in the right places. So I’m gonna show you… Screaming whoah…

He “sang-screamed” and we repeated. I loved how he made every one part of the concert! He started singing “the city” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fXWjuwlpEo ). And us in the audience screamed at the right places, just like he told us…The song went on great. I think Ed enjoyed having us singing with him. When the song ended he got another guitar.

He then started tuning the guitar. When he was done tuning he turned toward the audience again.

-Can I tell you guys a story? It´s kind of a long and pointless story, but it makes this song fit in a bit more. You could say it´s a kinda intro to the song…So I’m gonna stand here, like a stand-up comedian, and tell you a story…

He stood at the front of the stage. Right above me…

-I come from a small farming town in England and we have one festival near us which we all go to. It´s called latitude festival. And yeah…I’ve been going there since I was about fifteen.  And now I’m gonna explain to you, the typical festival for us. We met at some mates house with some beer and then we all went to this festival. Music don´t start until Friday so…We then sit with our beers in a circle with a fire in the middle. And we drink! We start at seven and keep on going til about three. That´s how it works…

Second day, Friday, when the music starts we wake up at about eight or nine o´clock either to very hot sunshine or rain. We start drinking again, maybe make some breakfast. And then we write a list of people we want to see performing…Like I want to see this band at this time on this stage. And the friends go like; we want to see this and this and this, cool…So we go to the main arena and then go off to see the first band. You say to your friends, right I’m going of this way to see that and that and that…And I’ll meet you back here in about an hour to see the next band. My friends often go off to see a band that was particularly good for being small indie kids trying to be hip. I used to go there and then I kind of walked back and met them and then lose them since I’ve been drinking quite a bit. It´s about 6 o´clock in the evening and I’m trying to find them and instead find some band at the main stage. Fast forward to ten o´clock in the morning; I´m watching a band I’ve never heard off singing a song that I’ve never played…I’m standing with strangers and singing words I´m making up. And I’m telling every single stranger that I love them. I´m hugging everyone! The point of this story is that I want you all to take the person next to you, could be a friend could be a stranger, and hug them! Tell them you love them!

 

Everybody grabbed the person next to them and hugged them. Myself hugged a quite attractive man my own age. I told him I loved him and he did the same. It felt good. It was cool!

-And now, keep your arm around that person tightly…and make a slow swaying motion. And I’m gonna sing my festival tune…

Eds voice filled the arena, everyone swaying with the music…

I was just relaxing in the strangers arms…this WAS beautiful…

-Imagine: It´s three o´clock in the morning and you drunk a little bit more…you´re in a state of complete euphoria and you kind of lost interest in the band on stage…you turn to your partner. Don´t look at me or the stage, just look at your partner! In the eyes! Make eye contact! And sing this with passion, into their eyes…

Complete euphoria…

As the song stopped it was like waking up from a calm and nice sleep…

-Thank you! Now it feels like it´s a little bit more love in here…Now…This is probably going to be the most quiet song for the evening…

He then started singing kiss me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXL8BEPl-Nw ). It was quiet. The only thing that could be heard was Eds voice.

-Right! I have some good news and some bad news. Bad news is this is my final song. Good news is that like every other music act in the world I’m gonna wait outside the stage and if you want to hear more you make some noise. And also; if you don´t know the words to this song you are at the wrong gig.

He then started singing Lego house… (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhfePE5PIv8 ). Since it was “the last song” I just enjoyed it. Everybody, including me, was singing with him.

When he was done he ran off stage and everybody started screaming like crazy. Of course.

And in came Ed once more. This time he started singing the A-team (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KlOodL9Gw4&feature=related ), his number one single…

-White lips, pale face, breathing in snowflakes…

I loved this song. It was the one that made me start listening to Eds music. In the last chorus he told us to take our phones out and hold them in the air. I looked back and it looked like a heaven full of stars…

When he was done singing “A-team” he talked for a bit before announcing he was going to sing “chasing cars” by snow patrol. Since it was one of my favorite songs I smiled.

-We´ll do it all…everything…on our own…

I was swaying with the music…and I wasn´t the only one! Screams could be heard from everywhere…

-You´ve been amazing! Thank you for coming! And thank you for singing!

He then finished off the gig with “you need me, I don´t need you” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXvzzTICvJs ). The atmosphere was awesome! Everybody seemed so happy!

-Thank you!

He went off the stage. It was a bit like waking up…Everybody started leaving the arena, including me. I was just about to go away when I felt someone laying their hand on my shoulder.

-I´m sorry…would you like to meet sometime?

It was the hot guy I’d been hugging during “this”!

-Ehm…yeah…sure…

-So…should I take your number or something?

-Sounds great, I said smiling.

-Ok then, he said while picking up his phone.

I told him my number and I got his. We also decided to meet the day after. I walked out from the arena with a big smile on my lips. This was the best day in my life so far! And this trip was the best trip ever! And it was only going to get better I thought while waiting for a cab back to the hotel…
