The Raggedy Man

It's the year of 2026 and Lily Luna Potter is in her final year of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Lily is eighteen and is ready to decide on what she wants to do in life after her amazing time at Hogwarts. However, a raggedy man in a blue police box arrives and her life is turned upside-down. The wizarding world is in danger and instead of focusing on her future, Lily needs to focus on keeping alive.

2. The Time Machine

I continued to stare at the strange man. How did he get into Hogwarts? Hogwarts was the safest place I knew, there were all sorts of enchantments to stop people entering.

"I'm The Doctor!", he grinned, thrusting a hand out for me to shake it. I stayed glued to the floor with my arms stuck to my sides and The Doctor laughed awkwardly, pulling his hand away. I thought to myself, what kind of name is that? It can't be his real name surely. The Doctor then bent down and gathered more snow into his palm. He stood up, lifted his hand to his mouth and licked some of the snow off. "Definitely real snow," he muttered.

"Well of course it is, what did you expect?!", I spluttered, the first time I had talked to this man who clearly had some mental issues.

"Hawaii, actually", The Doctor admitted mournfully. "Anyway, where am I and what year is it?".

"Hogwarts obviously, 2026", I replied confused. "How could you not know that?!". The Doctor disregarded my question and ran out of the Dark Forest, out into the open. He spotted the castle and laughed in disbelief. He looked back at me and clapped his hands together.

"Brilliant!", The Doctor roared with laughter. "You'd think after all the things I've seen, nothing would surprise me but I was wrong! Actual Hogwarts? It's real?!". I nodded slowly. What the hell did he mean by real? Of course it was! The Doctor was clearly insane. He resumed to laugh like a maniac, his eyes wide with awe. He began to lay down in the snow and make snow angels, grinning widely. Yes, he was definitely mad.

After about five minutes of this, I finally got my speech back and demanded to know who he really was. He answered that he was The Doctor. Just The Doctor. Not a doctor. I asked him how he got here, he answered in his TARDIS. I looked at him blankly.

"What? That thing?", I said, pointing at the blue police box. The Doctor gasped, looking deeply offended. He rushed towards the box and stroked the blue wood. "She's not a thing! She's beautiful and she's my time machine!". I didn't think time machines even existed, the closest was a Time Turner, a device which you had to turn so many times to go back in time. Those weren't even available anymore. Every wizard knew fully well that bad things happened to wizards who meddle with time.

At that moment, my barn owl, Oswin, glided down from the sky. She landed on my shoulder, a letter pinched between her beak. A letter from home! I took the letter from her and scratched her neck lovingly. She hooted softly.

"You have an owl!", The Doctor grinned. This set him off chuckling with disbelief again, marching around the place and taking in his surroundings. I ignored him and started to read my letter.

    Dear Lily,

We're all missing you lots! It's a little sad to think you won't be coming home for Christmas but you should enjoy your last Christmas at Hogwarts. Albus is doing great and you'll be pleased to hear he recently was offered a job to work in the wand shop in Diagon Alley. James still hasn't got a job yet but he's started talking now about working with dragons in Romania like Uncle Ron's brother, Charlie, did. We would miss him a lot if he decided to but at least he'd be doing something he enjoyed. Sorry this letter is so short but things are a little busy at the moment, trying to sort out last minute Christmas presents! If you send Oswin back we'll write to you Christmas Day along with your presents.

    Love from, Mum and Dad.

I smiled to myself. I was so pleased that Albus had been offered a job, especially one like working in Diagon Alley. I would envy James if he did go to Romania, I pondered, how exciting would that be? Maybe I could consider doing that too? My family was a very close family, so I had always got on well with Albus and James. I remember my first week at Hogwarts; they'd always make sure I got to lesson on time even if it meant they were late for theirs. It was great having my brothers at Hogwarts to enjoy the experience together.

I guessed that was something I missed, having a part of my family with me. I would be upset not to be with my family in the festive season but I was glad I could still send them letters. I had to admit I would miss Christmas at home, where Aunt Hermione conjured little blue lights and placed them in jars, scattering them around the house giving a calming glow. I would miss my family's game of Exploding Snap and trying to find the most disgusting Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Bean.

I sighed and The Doctor whipped round, walking over to me, looking concerned. "I know something that will cheer you up!", he smiled. He grabbed my arm and pulled me towards the TARDIS, into the Dark Forest.

"I'm not allowed in there! It's forbidden, I'll be expelled!", I yelled, trying to stay back. The Doctor neglected my wish to resist going in there, opened the TARDIS door and pushed me softly in there.

My mouth fell open. It was truely magnificent. Steps led up to the middle where there was a circular dashboard covered with all sorts of buttons and screens, a towering clear tube rising up to the ceiling. The tube was giving off a strange blue light. Pillars twisted upwards like tree branches and long black wires hung from the ceiling. It was noticeably larger than from the outside, there was no way all of this could fit inside a police box without some sort of magic.

"It's bigger on the inside!", I exclaimed. "Is it magic?".

"Something like that", The Doctor shrugged. "Isn't she lovely?".

   "She really is".
