The Raggedy Man

It's the year of 2026 and Lily Luna Potter is in her final year of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Lily is eighteen and is ready to decide on what she wants to do in life after her amazing time at Hogwarts. However, a raggedy man in a blue police box arrives and her life is turned upside-down. The wizarding world is in danger and instead of focusing on her future, Lily needs to focus on keeping alive.

15. The Lake

I opened my eyes to see that I was standing at the foot of a lake. The winter sun reflected off the surface of the lake and the soft wind made ripples and waves in the water. The times I had been there, the lake had been like a mirror, still and smooth. The summer weather that I had experienced by this very lake was sweltering with no breeze at all.

Although the wind was soft, it was harsh and cold against my face. Without knowing what I was doing, I kicked off my shoes and socks, feeling the blades of grass beneath my feet. I fell back onto the grass, my red hair fanning out around my head. I pulled my scarlet Quidditch cloak closer around my body to keep warm.

I had happened to think of this place because it was where my family and I came one summer when I was very young. I remembered Albus, James and Dad having a competition on who could skim a pebble the furthest across the lake. I was sat with Mum on a picnic blanket, making daisy chains. The daisy chains were too fiddly for me and I got upset, throwing my unfinished chain to one side. Mum didn't get cross but laughed, and placed a perfect crown of daisies on my head. This cheered me up and I skipped off to join my brothers in skimming pebbles. Dad left us to sit by Mum and they giggled like teenagers as he fed her strawberries, stroking her long fiery hair.

I recall thinking as a child that this was the most beautiful place in the world, and the place that I felt most happy, where my family felt most happy. Although, we never came back to that lake, no matter how much I pestered my parents. It was on a holiday, and they wanted to spend the rest of the holiday doing other things like going to the beach. We never came on holiday near to the lake again, and up until the point where my life could have been snatched away by the angels, I had forgotten about it.

Now, there were no daisies and the grass wasn't as green as before. I walked to the water's edge, the ice cold water grasping my feet. I scoured the ground for a flat pebble, and when finding one, skimmed it across the lake. My pebbles would only hit the water about three times before sinking to the bottom of the lake, never to be seen. I was as bad as skimming as when I was there before, Albus and James managing seven skims.

I realised that I should apparate back into Hogsmeade now, before The Doctor and Professor McGonagall became worried. I found it hard to leave the calming place, where I wanted to just skim pebbles all day and lay in the grass. Maybe one day The Doctor could take me here, I thought. I was sure he wouldn't mind taking me on a trip just once, when I was older. I could come here to forget about everything, feel tranquil and relaxed.

I took one last look at the lake and then apparated. Apparation wasn't the most comfortable way of travelling, feeling like you were going to be crushed into a pulp by the amount of pressure hammering into your body. I had become used to it after many times of practising with it, but I would still pass if I was offered to ride on my broom.

In an instant, I was back at Hogsmeade. Just looking at the snow around me made me feel colder and I wished I was in the common room, basking in the warmth of the fire like a cat. The village was starting to come to life now, the owners of the shops on their way to have a quick Butterbeer before a long day of work.

For some reason I could not move from that spot. What if my plan hadn't worked? Maybe it was a total disaster and a waste of time, and the angels were still free to roam Hogsmeade and Hogwarts. These thoughts made me rooted to the ground, an invisible force of worry and guilt keeping me there. I didn't want to disappoint anyone. I tried to force my feet to walk but it was no use.

Tears began to sting my eyes but I bit my lip to stop them spilling out.

"Lily!", I heard shouted from up the path. The Doctor was charging towards me with long strides, an excited grin on his face, his tweed jacket flapping behind him. "You did it!". I burst into tears of happiness and ran into his open arms, sobbing and laughing at the same time. "You brilliant, brilliant, brilliant Lily Potter".

I heard something odd and clung tighter to him, my head pressed against his chest.

"I didn't know you were such a cuddly person, more of a firey, I'll rip your head off if you touch me kind of person".

    "Shut up!", I hissed.

    "Ah, there's the fire".

I could now hear it clearly. The beat of not one heart...but two. I leapt back so I could see his face. "You have two hearts!", I spluttered. "Why didn't you tell me?!".

"Well Miss Potter, for me having two hearts is completely normal. You're the weird one with only one heart. Humans are weird. No offense", he added. Two hearts was in no way completely normal. The rythm of two hearts beating in his chest was disturbing. I had no time to think more of this as I was swamped in a sea of the Gryffindors who helped, Professor Longbottom and Professor McGonagall. I was smothered in hugs and people praising me for my idea. Professor McGonagall shed a tear or two and Daisy gave me an extra tight hug.

"Poor Susan", I suddenly cried, remembering that she wasn't there to celebrate with us.

"I'll hold a special assembly in the Great Hall today", Professor McGonagall said solemnly. "I'll explain to everyone what has happened. Will you join us, Doctor?". I looked at The Doctor eagerly, and thankfully he agreed to come.

Forlornly, the group of us walked back to to the castle in silence, in order to respect the courageous girl that was Susan.
