Rising Star

Abigail Smith is an ordinary teenager with big dreams. Her wish is to become the world's biggest popstar, and everybody knows that when Abigail wants something, she doesn't back down until she gets it. But there are a few distractions along the way . . .

5. Abby Gets A Gig

"Abby!" Her mum called. Abby knew what was coming. She skipped down the stairs.

"Yes Mum?" She asked, coming into the kitchen.

"Abby, you're off the hook," her mum smiled.

Abby smiled, and moved towards to fridge to get a cereal bar. "And?" She asked. She knew her mum well enough to know that something else was coming.

"I booked you a gig," She cried.

"What?!?" Abby laughed. "Really? Where?" She was bursting with happiness.

"At the cafe down the street. Some band that was playing there cancelled and they needed a new performer quickly," She explained.

"But didn't you need some of my songs to show them?" Abby frowned. Normally that's what happened when she got a gig.

Her mum held up a small disk, with a picture of her and the words 'Abigail Smith. Demo CD' written on them. "Mum!" She snatched the CD from her. "Where did you get this?"

"It was taped to the back of your songbook," She held up a small black and white book.

"Mum! You're not supposed to look in that!" She grabbed that off her, too. "When's the gig, anyway? And how many songs am I playing?"

"Friday. And you're playing your whole album."

"A whole album. By Friday. You're joking, right? I don't have a whole album! I can't write one by Friday! And I don't even have a band! I can't just stand on stage and play guitar unaccompanied!" Abby started to panic. She couldn't mess this up.

"Well, I asked Harry, in your year, and he said that he'd play electric guitar for you. And his friend, what was his name again?"

Abby's heart quickened. Harry would play for her? That was so sweet. "James."

"Ah, that's right. James'll play the drums for you, and Ellie can do back-up vocals, right? And lucky you, on your song, Rose, you'll be able to play piano!"

"But who'll play acoustic guitar then?" Abby asked. She had a bad feeling about this.

   "Charlotte," Her mother said simply.

    Abby groaned.
