Cared enough to ask if she was okay.

14. Chapter 14

Melanie’s POV:

“Miss me?” I said, with an evil smirk on my face.

I could tell that Jasmine was surprised, but she kept an emotionless expression on her face. I walked into her apartment, shoving past her and landing on her couch.

“What do you want?” She asked, turning around to face me and crossing her arms.

“Nothing. Just here to warn you” I said, with a genuinely fake smile.

“Warn me about what? I’m not leaving Harr-”

“Not that Harry” I said, chuckling.

“What are you talking about?” she asked, confused.

“Oh, come on, you know you have another Harry somewhere in your life” I said.

She gasped, realizing what I was talking about.

“So, you do remember Harold?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

She was worried now. She sat on the couch in front of me, crossing her legs. I could tell that, with the mention of his name, she was remembering everything that happened before she came to London. Her eyebrows were furrowed and her shoulders were now tense. I had pushed her buttons, and I can tell that they about to burst.

“How do you know about him?”

“You’ll find out soon enough. And, let me just say, he’s not too happy about you and Harry”.

I decided that I wouldn’t let her in on too much. I wanted to keep her on her toes. I was amused by the fact that I knew information that she didn’t. I could sense the tension in the air, and I saw the curiosity building in her. As an attempt to provoke her even more, I told her, “He’s coming soon”.

Jasmine’s POV:

Harold was coming.

Great, I thought.

“How do you know about that?”

“You don’t need to worry about how I know. I think you should start worrying about what will happen when he comes”.

“How do I know you’re not lying?” I asked.

“You don’t”.

Again, we sat in silence. I was trying to reads her facial expression. She was staring back, waiting to see how I would react. I stared at her, not believing what she was saying. I wanted to panic, but I wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction that she came for.

“Have fun in Paris?” she asked.

“How do you know we went to Paris?” I asked, demanding an answer.

“Who do you think put the pictures of you guys in Paris on the internet?” she asked.

She leaned back, amused with herself.

“You, you what?” I stammered.

“Why are you doing this to me?” I yelled.

“Because, I love Harry” she said.

I was never the type of girl to say what was on my mind. I try I try to keep everything to myself, but her saying that she “loved Harry”, angered me. She didn’t love him. I wanted to say something to her, but I was scared. Then, I remembered what my grandmother told me as a child.

All it takes is 20 seconds of courage.

20 seconds.

If my blood was boiling before, then I was now overflowing. I got off the sofa and walked towards her.

“What is the matter with you? Are you mental?!” I yelled, hovering over her.

15 seconds.

“If you think Harold coming here is going to hurt me and Harry, then you got another thing coming. This is one fight that you are not going to win” I scoffed, practically spitting out my words. Melanie was now wide-eyed, surprised at how I was reacting. She was silent and shocked.

10 seconds.

“Huh”, I scoffed. “Now you have nothing to say?”

I crossed my arms and rolled my eyes at her. I heard her gulp and I wanted to stop, but I couldn’t. I still had5 seconds left.

“Get out, now. I don’t know why you’re still here. You disgust me”.

Melanie got up and was heading for the door, a solemn expression on her face. She looked as if she felt bad, but I knew she probably didn’t. The damage had already been done; Harold was coming and I didn’t know when. She turned around once more before leaving, as if she wanted to say something, so I took this opportunity to talk at her once again. By now, I was heated and I was saying everything that came to mind.

1 second.

“And you want to know why I’m going to fight? Because I love him”. I had yelled it at the top of my throat and as soon as the words came out of my mouth, I gasped and covered my mouth.

I was standing in the living room, staring at Melanie. She smiled at me; however, the genuineness of the smile was questionable. “Good luck”, she said with a small voice, closing the door behind her.

I ran to the bathroom and let the tears fall.

Tahlia’s POV:

I walked into my apartment and heard a sobbing noise coming from the bathroom. I rushed to find Jasmine laying against the bathtub, crying.

“Jasmine, what’s wrong?” I asked, going over to move her hair away from her face.

“It’s horrible” she said, crying.

“What’s horrible? Why are you crying?”

“I love him” she blurted out. She was now full on bawling. She reached over to take a piece of toilet paper and wiped her mouth. She tied her hair back with a hair tie that she had on her wrist and she leaned back against the wall. I put my arm around her, protectively, and squeezed her.

“There’s nothing wrong with being in love” I said.

“You don’t understand” she said, sniffling. “It’s wrong if the other person doesn’t love you back”.

“And how would you know that Harry doesn’t love you back?”

“Because he hasn’t said anything yet” she said, whimpering and trying to hold back even more tears.

“But, neither have you”.

She stared at me and put her head down, realizing I was right. I let her sit in silence, knowing she was trying to understand what I had just pointed out to her.

“I hate it when you’re right”, she said, wiping her eye with her sleeve.

“I don’t” I said smiling.

She was still leaning on my shoulder, and we sat in silence.

“He’s coming” she said, turning her head up to look at me.

She chuckled and said, “Yes, but not that one. Harold”.

“What?! Why?!” I asked.

She told me everything, leaving out no detail.

“What is wrong with her?” I said, getting angry.

“Tahlia, don’t get so angry” she said quietly, indicating that she didn’t want to talk about Melanie anymore

“Besides, I already yelled at her” she said, winking.

“You did, and I am proud of you. Don’t let people push you around. Don’t let them think that they can step all over you just because you’re tiny” I said, putting emphasis on the word “tiny”.

“I’m not that short” she said, crossing her arms.

“Sure” I said, sarcastically.

“But, I feel bad” she said.

I groaned, saying, “Why?! You feel bad because you gave her what she deserved?”

“She looked sorry before she left…” she said, shrugging her shoulders.

“Yes, Jasmine, I’m sure she had a sudden change of heart in the 20 seconds you yelled at her”. I rolled my eyes at Jasmine’s naivety, but immediately regretted it when I saw her face drop.

“I’m just saying, it could all be an act. Look at all the things she’s done already” I said.

She was silent, and her eyes were now closed against my chest.

“You need to talk to Harry” I said.

“No, I don’t”.

“Fine”, I said. “You will, eventually”.

She was slowly falling asleep, so I let her lie in my lap. I felt her breathing become even, signaling that she was asleep. I reached into my back pocket, and took out my phone. I looked at the time and saw that it was midnight.

He’ll come, I thought.

*TEXT TO HARRY: Jasmine needs you.*

I didn’t get a reply back and assumed that he was sleeping. Five minutes later, Harry was calling my phone.

“Hello?” I asked.

“Open the door!” Harry said.

“I can’t, Jasmine’s sleeping on me”.

“Then, how am I supposed to get in?” he asked.

“There’s a key in the pot to your left, but it’s all the way at the bottom, so you have to dig”.

“Of course, I do” he mumbled.

Another five minutes later, Harry was in the bathroom doorway. As soon as he saw Jasmine, he took her and lifted her into his arms. He left to bring her to her room, so I went to the kitchen. Minutes later, I saw him sitting on a chair at my kitchen table and I sat across from him.

“So, what happened?” he asked.

“I can’t tell you, but Jasmine will tomorrow” I said.

“Do you want some tea?” I offered.

“No, I’m fine”. He yawned and asked, “Can I stay here tonight?”

“Course, you can sleep in the guest room, there are extra sheets there” I said.

“It’s fine, I’ll sleep with her”.

I rose my eyebrow at him and he blushed, saying, “No, not like that!”

“Uh huh, sure” I said, winking.

Harry’s POV:

I went to Jasmine’s room and lied down next to her.

I wonder what happened, I thought. I looked at Jasmine’s face. Her eyebrows were furrowed and her cheeks were red. She looked tired and worried. I began to think about what I had done wrong, when I saw Tahlia standing by the door.

“You didn’t do anything wrong” she assured.

I nodded my head, and she left. I felt Jasmine moving next to me. Her hand found mine and our fingers entwined.

If I lay here; if I just lay here, would you lie with me and just forget the world? I sang softly in her ear.
