“Do you think you could stay one more night?” He begged.
I sighed in frustration. The man I was in this stupid conversation with was at the ripe age of thirty-seven, was a portly gentleman to say the least, and had a uni-brow from hell.
“No, Gary. I have other clients.” I said and crossed my arms.
“I’ll pay you double the amount you’d bring in.” He was at his last resort.
“No, I can’t back out of my jobs. I’ll get a bad rep,” I sighed again and put my hands at my side.
“Look, go to a bar or something and get some socialization. You’re like a hermit. You’re never going to find someone to get married to or whatever if you keep paying me to sit around your house all day.” I tried to motivate him constantly, he’d been a regular costumer for years.
I know what you’re thinking you’ve had sex with him?
And the answer to that question is, no.
All of my jobs are strictly professional… Unless they’re hot. Then it can get no-so-professional but that only happens like once every million years. Usually all of my clients are like Gary; fat, alone, and have four cats as roommates. All of Gary’s cats have extremely weird cat names. Like Steven. That’s a person name, not an animal name. But anyway, I’m getting off subject. I don’t get involved with my costumers. All I am is a female escort. I go to places with men like Gary so they don’t look like losers when they go to their high school reunion or a wedding, etc. The problem is, I’m so damn likable. They usually get a little attached.
“But I did find someone, Cora,” He said with a cheesy grin on his face.
“You did?” I asked, shocked to the core.
Gary found someone? Ew. Ew, ew, ew, ew, ew! But good for him. The fat hermit-like bastard found someone!
“Yes, and she’s amazing.” He said and moved closer to me.
“Who is she?” I asked smiling.
“You, of course.” He said beaming with happiness.
“No, no, no,” I paused. “Gary, you’re a great friend. Really, you are. But,” I laughed. “I’m not the girl for you. I drink, I smoke, I cuss a little,” He gave me a disbelieving look. “Okay, a lot. I cuss a lot. But my point is, I’m not right for you… and you’re not right for me.” His face dropped.
“I’m sorry.” I said quietly.
He was silent, but after a few quick moments of silence he nodded.
“I’m going to go, okay?” He nodded.
I grabbed my purse and went outside of his house. I flagged down a taxi and looked out the window on the way home.
Living in New York City this time of year was great. It was February, two weeks away from Valentine's day. I had no date on Valentine's day this year. Usually I was fully booked. It kind of made me feel… well, like ass.
I told Gary about it because I have no friends (I really need to take my own advice and go to a bar) and he instructed me to get a cat; he told me they were good listeners. That very same day, I went to the shelter and brought home Pearl. She was a white long haired cat with a pale pink nose and paws to match. The next morning I woke up and apparently she decided my left tennis shoe was a great place to take a shit. I was furious. I spent hours the day before rubbing her paws in the kitty litter in her litter box and putting newspaper on every surface, trying to house train her but it wouldn’t work for the next two weeks. It was insanely difficult. I was on the phone with the shelter about to call and let them know I was bringing her back because my loft had a terrible odor and I was tired of having to buy new shoes. I leaned against the kitchen counter and watched her walk around. I didn’t want to give her back, but I needed to. She walked into the bathroom and put her paws into the litter just like I’d showed her before. A woman at the shelter answered the phone and I told her to hold on a second. Pearl, for the first time, took a shit in a place other than my shoes or on a piece of newspaper. I was ecstatic. I screamed in excitement and hung up the phone. Once we got past the whole shitting in my shoes thing, she was great. And to my surprise, Gary was right. She was a good listener. Okay, enough about my cat’s bowel habits.
Tonight I had a date with Derrick Willows. A successful business man that was not-so-successful in love. He was thirty, had dirty blonde hair, blue eyes, and a muscular, but lanky build. He was hot. Maybe if I was lucky enough, I’d get laid.
He had sent me an email, said he’d seen my ad in the paper. He had attached several photos of himself and explained that he needed a date for a party held in his father’s honor because his mother and father are always nagging him about being alone for the rest of his life and living in a small apartment with a cat for his only best friend.
I’m not going to lie, the cat-for-his-only-best-friend-thing hit a little too close to home.
But, back to the details, it was black tie so I was instructed to wear my best.
For the first time in a long time I was actually excited about my job.
I went into my large walk-in closet. It was actually supposed to be a bedroom, but I needed a variety of things to wear; you never know where I might have to go. I had everything organized in alphabetical order. I knew exactly which dress I was going to wear. It was black satin that clung to my body in just the right spots and a neckline that hung gracefully just below my breast bone.
After I got out of the shower, finished my hair and my makeup I got in a taxi and drove to Derrick’s loft in the heart of New York City. The doorman greeted me with a delicate ‘hello’.
“You look lovely.” He said with a smile.
“Thank you.” I said returning the smile.
I got on the elevator. Derrick told me he lived on the twentieth floor. There was no ‘20’ button. The highest number it went to was nineteen… Then the penthouse. I timidly pressed the penthouse button. I cupped my hand over my mouth and breathed into it checking my breath. It was okay. I grabbed a mint out of my clutch. I adjusted my dress one last time and walked out of the elevator. I knocked on Derrick’s door. I heard him struggling inside, I heard glass break and some unintelligible profanity. More glass breaking and even more profanity. I knocked on the door.
“Just a fucking minute!” He yelled.
I stood at the door quietly.
“Shit, it’s seven-thirty?! Fuck my life.” I heard him mumbling.
I heard him come closer to the door, stop in his tracks, clear his throat, take an exaggeratingly long breath, then opened the door.
“Oh, it’s you…um,” He stared at my face. He snapped his fingers then rubbed his temples.
“Forgive me, what’s your name again?” He asked.
“Cora.” I answered and gave him a slight smile.
“Right, sorry,” He said as he scratched the back of his head. He stepped aside. “Come in.” He said smiling.
I did as told and looked around the massive penthouse. It was beautiful. He had a huge wall of windows that overlooked Times Square. I heard Derrick in the background sweeping up glass but I was too mesmerized by the beautiful view to offer my assistance.
I heard him put away the broom and dust pan and sigh.
“I’ll be right back, I’ve got to put on my suit. Make yourself at home.” He said and I nodded.
I sat down on his contemporary style white sofa and crossed my legs. I sat like this for a few minutes before deciding that I needed a drink. I'd never felt so nervous before. I got up and walked quietly into the kitchen. I searched through the cabinets looking for liquor. I heard Derrick clear his throat. I quickly closed the cabinet.
“I was looking for liquor. Sorry.” I gave him a quick insincere smile.
“First cabinet on your left.” He said and pointed to it. “Don’t be sorry. I told you to make yourself at home.” He said with quite possibly the sexiest smile I had ever seen.
I grabbed the whiskey out of the cabinet along with a glass.
He put his hand on my hand. “Are you sure you want to drink whiskey?” He asked.
“Yeah, the other stuff is for pussies.” I said and he laughed.
I poured about half a glass and chugged it.
“Much better.” I said with a smile.
“You look gorgeous by the way.” He said.
“Thank you…” For the first time I realized he was wearing a suit, one that fit him perfectly and made him look even more attractive. “You look great too.” I said and smiled.
“Thank you.” He said and I nodded.
“We need to get going.” He said and sighed.
The elevator ride was painstakingly quiet. He shoved his hands in his pockets and looked at me. For a moment I thought he might actually say something but I guess he was just looking at me.
“So how long have you been doing this?” He asked.
“Long enough.” I said and brushed the question off with a giggle.
“I’m not trying to get personal or anything, but do you usually have sex with your clients?” He asked.
“Not generally. It’s not part of my fee and it’s not a requirement if that’s what you’re asking.” I said.
“I was hoping it was.” He mumbled so quietly I almost didn’t hear it.
I turned my head and looked at him. The elevator doors opened and he took my hand and led me outside to a huge limo. He opened the door for me and gestured for me to go first.
After about a twenty minute ride in silence, we arrived at a massive mansion. Derrick got out of the limo and helped me out. Derrick and I approached the doorman.
“I’m Derrick Willows and this is my beautiful Cora.” He said with a smile as he gestured to me.
I giggled and smiled.
We walked in the parlor one large staircase going down either side of the room. A DJ was beneath the landing by the French doors that lead outside. Guests danced with each other and laughed at jokes and talked over each other loudly. The music was pretty boring it was classical or something. I saw the bar in the corner of the room. I let go of Derrick’s hand and made a beeline for it. I ordered a scotch and pulled out my wallet to pay for it, the bartender stopped me.
“It’s on the house. Everything’s free tonight.”
A sinister grin appeared on my lips.
“Free alcohol?” I asked and he nodded.
“This night just got so much better.” I said as I took my drink.
I threw it back and ordered another. I walked around aimlessly looking for Derrick with my drink in hand. I felt Derrick put his arms around me from behind. I turned cautiously, careful not too look too surprised just in case Derrick’s parent’s were watching.
“They know we’re here and they’re watching us. Especially you.” He mumbled in my ear.
I smiled making it look like he’d just told me something wonderful, and nodded.
He let go of me and offered me his arm.
“Since you’ve had a couple of drinks, you should probably go meet my parents. It’ll be easier with alcohol.” He said and smiled.
We slowly walked closer and closer to a woman and man who were both in their sixties.
“Hi, sweetheart!” Derrick’s mother said as she greeted him with a hug.
“Hi, mom.” He said. “Mom and dad, this is Cora.” He introduced me.
I reached out my hand to shake both of theirs. They smiled at me and took my hand.
“Lovely to meet you.” I said.
“Lovely to meet you too. I thought Derrick was never going to get anyone.” His mother said and laughed.
“Shut up, Muriel.” Derrick’s father said. “You’ll scare her away.” He mumbled.
"Richard," She said through her teeth with a fake smile. "Don't be a dick."
“Nothing can really scare me away, I’ve seen it all.” I joked and laughed.
“Well, anyways. You’re very beautiful and I hope that you enjoy yourself at this drag of a party.” His father said with a smile.
“Would you like to dance?” Derrick asked as he took my hand and kissed it.
“I’d love to.” I said and smiled.
We went into the middle of the dance floor, surrounded by tons of people.
He put both of his hands on my sides and pulled me closer. I drapped my arms around his neck and smiled.
“Well, that went well.” He said.
“I hope so.” I said looking up at him.
For the next two hours I abused my free alcohol privileges. I was shit faced. I took my hair down and danced. Well, flailed my arms and body around like a fish out of water. But it was the best I could do. I lost track of Derrick about thirty minutes ago. I went over to the DJ and smiled.
“I need to make a request.” I giggled and he nodded. “Stop playing shitty music.” I said and laughed.
“I wish, I have a play list that the Willows’ picked out.” He said.
“Well, play something different.” I said simply.
He mulled it over for a few seconds and agreed.
“What do you want to hear?” He asked.
“Tik Tok by Kesha.” I said and he nodded.
I went over to the bar and drank one more shot. The familiar beginning started to play. I started to dance. But instead of flailing around like a fish, I was dancing. Like really dancing. Or so I thought I was. I climbed up on a table and started to dance in front of all of the guests. They gasped and watched me in horror. Until Derrick climbed up on the table and joined me. I laughed and he gave a terrified glance.
“What are you doing?” He whispered.
“I don’t know. I’m drunk.” I replied.
The crowd started to join in and dance too, along with cheering us on.
After the song ended, the DJ started to play more modern music.
Derrick jumped down from the table and helped me down. I was stumbling all over the place.
“We need to go.” He said urgently.
“I…I’m s-s-s-sorry.” I said slurring my speech.
“It’s okay. The party sucked until then.” He said and laughed.
His father emerged from the crowd and grabbed me by the arm.
“Young lady,” He started. “Thank you for making this not suck so damn much.” He said and laughed.
I laughed and nodded.
“I’m going to take her home.” Derrick said.
“Why not just spend the night here? Have breakfast with your mother and I in the morning?” He asked.
“No, I don’t think-”
“I have a cat.” I cut Derrick off.
“Stay anyway. I’m sure your cat will be just fine.” He smiled.
Derrick looked at me as if to say, “I’ll pay you extra. And buy you another cat if your other one dies from starvation.”
“Okay.” I said with a smile.
“Great!” Derrick’s father exclaimed.
“I’ll have the maid get a room ready for you two.” He said and walked away.
“I’m so sorry, Cora.” He said.
“No, it’s okay.” I said and smiled.
The party ended after midnight. We said goodnight to Derrick’s parents and went up to our bedroom.
He took off his jacket, shirt, and pants; the only thing left were his boxers. His muscles were sculpted beautifully. I took off my dress, my necklace, and took out my earrings and collapsed on the bed. I crawled underneath the blankets and cuddled up against a pillow. I felt him climb into bed and under the covers. I ditched the pillow immediately and cuddle up against him instead. He was a little taken aback by it at first, but then wrapped his arms around me. I drifted off to sleep within minutes after I got over the excitement of being in a bed with a guy like Derrick.
