Age is Just a Number

Caroline is a 15-year-old girl who likes One Direction, but isn't in love with them like the rest of her friends. When one of her friends takes the four of them to meet One Direction backstage, Caroline meets five boys who will change her life forever.

10. I'll Catch You

Caroline's POV

I wondered where Harry was taking me. I was still a little shocked that he said that he liked me, even after I said all that stupid stuff. If someone had acted like that while I was on a date with them, I would have simply labeled them as a weirdo and left it at that. But then, I'd never been on a date before...

"Okay, close your eyes," Harry said, grinning wildly. I was a little scared, but I did as I was told. I felt the car stop soon after, but Harry told me to keep them closed. I heard him get out and then my door opened. As he took my hand it tingled, as if he had shocked me. He pulled me out of the car and led me around until I could hear music and people talking and laughing. Harry told me to open my eyes, and then yelled, "Ta da!" as I did. I saw...a roller rink!

"Wow," I breathed. I had never been roller skating before. This place was huge. I looked around the rink. There were people laughing, children racing, and couples holding hands. Suddenly someone fell down. A knot formed in my stomach. What if I fall down? And in front of Harry? "Harry," I said worriedly, "I've, um, I've never,-" "Been roller skating before?" Harry laughed. "Don't worry, if you fall, I'll catch you."

It made me feel a little better that Harry was an experienced roller skater, so if I fell backwards, he would be able to catch me without taking both of us down. We went to the counter, rented a couple pairs of skates, and sat down to put them on. I couldn't seem to figure out how to put them on, so Harry helped me lace them up. We went out onto the floor and I almost fell immediately, but Harry kept his promise and caught me. He held my arm until I got the hang of it. Once I was good enough to stand on my own feet without clinging to him, he decided to show off some of his moves.

I watched wide-eyed as he swiveled and turned, making really cool figure on the floor, even making 360 turns. Unfortunately, as he was going backwards, he was unable to see where he was going, and ran into a wall, falling in a heap on the floor. I held my breathe, but he got up immediately, smiling like a madman. I started giggling uncontrollabely. "Well, I guess even the best make mistakes," he said, skating over to me. This made me giggle harder. I giggled too hard, and almost fell. I squealed, but as I went down Harry grabbed me and pulled me back up. He grabbed my hand, and it tingled again.

We talked for a long time, just skating in circles. But then he brought up a subject I dreaded talking about. "So, your fifteen?" he asked. I sighed and nodded my head. "Unfortunately," I replied, looking at the floor. "What do you mean?" he questioned. I took a deep breath. "It's unfortunate because I'm fiteen, and you're eighteen, and-" but he cut me off. With a kiss.

When he kissed me, it felt like my whole body tingled, just like when he grabbed my hand. But instead of my hand feeling like it had been shocked, my whole body felt like there was an electric rod in it and I'd just been struck by lightning. I was stone still at first, but then I let my body relax into his, kissing Harry back. It would have lasted much longer, but the skaters around us were yelling at us to get a room, and we had to pull away. "Age is just a number, Love," Harry whispered.

Harry's POV

Wow, it felt good to kiss her. It felt new again. I saw sparks. Whenever I kissed Evelyn it was just...empty. I didn't feel anything. When I kissed Caroline, I felt incredible. We pulled away after we'd heard enough of "Go on, lovebirds! Get a room!" from the skaters around us, and I whispered, "Age is just a number, Love."

Her cheeks turned pink again. I grinned at her, and we went to take off our skates. We turned them in and held hands as we walked back to the car. We drove back to the arena and parked the car. "Oh, shoot," she groaned. "I forgot to text my mom to pick me up." She pulled out her phone and started typing. "How long's the drive?" I asked. "About forty-five minutes," she sighed, putting her phone away.

"You could come in with me and meet the boys if you like," I suggested. She shook her head. "No, that's all right. I can wait here." I took her hand gently. "Come on. I won't let you wait out here alone. Not for forty-five minutes." I got out of the car and she followed. I took her into the arena lobby, where the lads had met to wait for me since we were going to rehearse once I got back. They saw Caroline and immediately stood up.

"Well well, we meet again," Louis said walking over to us. Caroline blushed and looked down. "Hello," she said quietly. The other boys stood up and greeted us as well. I explained the situation and the lads all said they would love it if she'd watch us rehearse. She simply nodded in agreement and went on blushing and looking at the floor. They lyrics from What Makes You Beautiful popped into my head when she smiled at the ground. I laughed inwardly and took her by the hand, leading her into the arena. We rehearsed until her mom picked her up and they drove away.

Niall walked up with a bag of chips. I tried to take some, but he pulled it away. "I like her," he said, still munching. "She's nice." With that he walked away. I shook my head and ran back to the boys to keep rehearsing.
