32. Duet

"Ello, love!" Dan said, giving me a peck on the cheek. I blushed and looked at the girls, waving as I pulled the door shut behind me. "Having a bit of a girls' night? Sorry to intrude." Dan apologized. I laughed.

"It's fine. They practically begged me to say yes." I said. Dan laughed and grinned at me.

"I swear I was going to get a punch in the face from Mickey if I didn't get you to go out with me by midnight." He said. "It took me long enough already." He said. I smiled up at him.

"How long is 'long enough?'" I asked, cocking and eyebrow. Dan went a little pink and shrugged.

"Probably a few months, but you were with Niall. I asked you as soon as you broke up before anyone else could get to you. I swear the entire male population was after you." He said. I blushed and shook my head.

"Not even! I'm surprised I could get two boys to like me, much less one!" I said. Dan snorted.

"Please. You don't need to be modest, I'm already wrapped around your little finger." I blushed and elbowed Dan.

"You know what I mean. I just don't get why boys like me, that's all." I said. Dan's hand slipped in mine and he pulled my hood up over my head as we walked outside and headed towards the cafeteria.

"Because you're beautiful, and funny, and sweet, and have an amazing voice." Dan said. I blushed and ducked my head. "Oh, come off it! You know it's true." He said. I blushed even harder.

"No I'm not." I said. Suddenly, I was hanging upside down over Dan's shoulder.

"If you won't admit that, then say I'm king of the world." He said. I felt the blood rushing to my head, but I shook my head anyway.

"Not gona say it!" I called.

"Say it!"

"Never!"

"I'll drop you."

"Dan Ferrari-Lane is the king of the world!" I screamed as loud as I could. Before Dan could flip me upright, I slapped his butt, hard.

"Ouch!" Suddenly, I was in a heap on the ground with Dan on top of me, red in the face with laughter. Something made me reach out and trace the curve of his eyebrow. He stopped laughing and gave me a grin.

"Stop it." He said.

"Stop what?" I asked, confused.

"Stop being so hard to resist." Dan replied, giving me a grin. I blushed and laughed.

"Sorry, it's natural. I don't know how you can stand it sometimes." I replied. Dan chuckled.

"I'm sitting." He said. I thought about it for a second and then laughed.

"Idiot." I snorted. Dan got to his feet and held out a hand to help me up, but instead I used all my might and pulled him down again. "Not so fast, mister." I said, wrapping my arms around his neck. Dan's breath was in a cloud in the cold air, hitting my face like steam.

"It's our first date, Ally. Are you sure?" He asked cautiously. I smiled at him and nodded.

"It would be our third or fourth date if I hadn't taken so long to get back to you." I said, then pressed my lips to his. Tingles shot up through my body, faster and sharper than I had ever gotten with Niall. My mind went foggy and my eyes wouldn't open, and it was like floating, my feet couldn't feel the ground.

"This is what I want." I said when I finally pulled away. Dan grinned at me.

"What?"

"This is so simple... and the way you make me feel... It's exactly what I want." I said, smiling at him. He grinned back and pulled me to my feet again. The way he knew when words were needed, they way he knew when to smile or when to reply, it was perfect. His thin face and curved brows and tousled brown hair and chocolate brown eyes... everything was perfect about him. And his obvious abs, which you could see through his shirt, were a plus.

"This is what I want too." He said, pulling me into the cafeteria. It was totally deserted, so we were all alone for our tea date. Dan smiled at me and hopped over the counter, preparing the tea while talking in a French accent. I laughed every time he spoke and nearly choked on my tea.

"Want to know what would be fun?" Dan asked. I looked at him and shrugged. "If we sang together."

"That's a brilliant idea! What do you wanna sing?" I asked, taking a sip of my tea. Dan shrugged.

"Have you seen Grease?" He asked. I laughed, raising my eyebrows.

"It's my favourite movie! Of course I've seen it!" I said. Dan grinned and grabbed my hand. He stood on his chair and helped me stand on mine, and then we climbed onto the table.

"Why not make a musical number of it?" He started tapping his foot on the table and whistling a tune and then I started to sing.

"I got chills
They're multiplying
And I'm losing control
'Cause the power you're supplying
It's electrifying!

You better shape up
'Cause I need a man
And my heart is set on you
You better shape up
You better understand
To my heart I must be true
Nothing left
Nothing left for me to do."

I belted, dancing around on the table. I unzipped my jumper and flung it across the room. Dan joined me for the chorus and we held hands, dirty dancing along the table.

"You're the one that I want
Oo-oo-oo, honey
The one that I want
Oo-oo-oo, honey
The one that I want
Oo-oo-oo, the one I need
Oh, yes indeed."

I started whistling the tune melody and clapping my hands to the beat that Dan had tapped out, while he sang the next verse. His voice was so smooth and strong that my heart rate picked up a little and I could feel my ears go pink.

"If you're filled
With affection
You're to shy to convey
Better take my direction
Feel your way

I better shape up
'Cause you need a man
I need a man
Who can keep me satisfied
I better shape up
If I'm gonna prove
You better prove
That my faith is justified
Are you sure
Yes I'm sure down deep inside."

I blushed as Dan took my hand and spun me around, holding me close and belting out his lines straight to me. His lips were inches from mine and it made my stomach flip over and over. He took a deep breath before we sang the chorus together again, saucily dancing back along the row of tables.

"You're the one that I want
Oo-oo-oo, honey
The one that I want
Oo-oo-oo, honey
The one that I want
Oo-oo-oo, the one I need
Oh, yes indeed."

Dan and I were standing inches apart when we finished singing, and he was staring straight in my eyes. His eyes were so dark and his stare so intense, and all I wanted in that moment was to kiss him. I grabbed a handful of his shirt in my hand and was about to pull him to me when we were interrupted by clapping and whistling.

"Amazing!" Louis and Eleanor shouted at the same time. Dan and I lept apart to see Louis, Eleanor, Harry, Liam, and Danielle all in the doorway in their pajamas. I blushed and threw my jumper at Louis.

"You always ruin the moment, you arse!" I said. Louis laughed and shrugged, and Eleanor swatted him.

"Hi Dan!" Eleanor said with a wave, and she and Danielle headed off to get some tea while ther whispered, shooting me excited looks. I blushed dark red and grinned at Dan as he helped me off the table. He jumped down to the floor and held my waist while I planted my hands on his shoulders, and he lifted me down slowly. I smiled at him and ran off to Danielle and Eleanor.

"That was adorable!" Dani said, squeezing me in a hug. I blushed and laughed.

"If I were you, I'd marry him now just for his last name. Ferrari-Lane, how does that even happen?" Eleanor said to herself. Dani and I laughed and prepared some tea.

"So are you two a couple?" Eleanor asked while I popped a few sugar cubes in my tea. I looked over at Dan, who was talking with Harry, Liam, and Louis, and shrugged at them.

"I think I want to be, and I think he does too, but this is our first time hanging out one on one." I said. Dani nodded and looked over at them. Liam grinned at her and blew her a kiss, which she pretended to catch and put in her pocket.

"AWWWW!" Eleanor and I cooed, poking her while she blushed.

"Shut it! I didn't just have an 80's musical number with my almost-boyfriend." She said, and Eleanor made a burning noise. I laughed and took a sip of my tea, which I spit out almost instantly.

"HOT MOTHER OF FUCKING GOD OUCH!" I shouted, dropping my mug onto the table and stepping away, my jaw hanging open and waving my hand over my tongue. Louis and Harry were laughing like crazy and Dan had a half-worried-half-amused look on his face, and Liam looked like he wanted to call the emergency services.

"Put your tongue back in your mouth!" Eleanor said, poking my jaw. I closed my mouth and made a sad face.

"Ouchie." I said. Danielle laughed and pointedly blew on her tea before taking a sip.

"Ally, want to head back?" Dan asked, giving me a look that said 'I want to be alone.' I nodded and grabbed my hoodie, then waved goodbye to everyone before I left.

"That was really fun." I said. Dan nodded, slipping his hand into mine again.

"You're got an amazing voice." He said, smiling at me. I blushed and shook my head.

"Not even! You're a brilliant singer! I don't know why you don't perform more often." I said, poking him in the ribs. Dan laughed and shrugged.

"I wish I did. I mean, it's fun being here with a group with Mickey and Greg, but I feel like they get to sing more solos than me." He said quietly. "But don't tell anyone I said that." I giggled and shook my head.

"My lips are sealed... and don't tell anyone I'm saying this, but you're a much better singer than both of them. Plus, you're way cuter." I said. Dan laughed and kissed my cheek.

"You knock all of the other girls here out of the park. Bromley was a boring school until you showed up, love." I nuzzled my head into his neck and laughed, wishing we could stay like this for a long time. But we started walking again in a comfortable silence, Dan humming a song he was working on with the boys, and me daydreaming about what it would be like to be his girlfriend. I know it was a lame thing to think about, but I liked the idea.

"What are you thinking about?" Dan asked. I looked up at his face, which was shadowed by his hair in the moonlight.

"How do you know I'm thinking about something?" I asked, challenging him. Dan smiled and pressed his thumb to my forehead, between my eyebrows.

"You get this cute little wrinkled right here," He said, and then traced his thumb over my nose, "And you wrinkle your nose."

"So I look like an angry pug when I think?" I asked. Dan laughed and shook his head.

"No, like your worried. But you look sweet when you think." He said, looking at me with the edge of his lip tilted up just a fraction of a centimeter. I stared back at  him and shrugged.

"I was just thinking about how much fun it was hanging out with you." I admitted. Dan smiled and squeezed my hand, and then he bit his lip. I wish he'd do that less, it makes it so hard for me not to just snog his face off.

"I was thinking the same thing." He said, grinning at me. I grinned back, and we were silent the rest of the way back to my room.

"I'll see you in classes tomorrow. But I'll probably be up all night thinking about you, so if you want you can come visit if you can't sleep." Dan chuckled, and then he leaned down and gave me a light kiss on the cheek. I wished he'd just kiss me again, but I think he was waiting for the exact right time. The way he looked at my face like he was reading a long, detailed book that was his very favourite of all time made me feel like he knew every detail of my life without even saying a word. It made me panic almost, but it also made me feel special, like he actually cared.

"I promise I will." I said, and then I grinned at him before I closed the door.
