13. Call Me Maybe?

ALLY

"Mum.... I just really miss him. Not a day goes by that I don't think about Michael. And I mean, Niall makes me so happy, but I just can't stop thinking about Michael. I feel like the reason he's gone is my fault." I said into the phone, pressing my palms into my eyes and pressing the speaker button. Mum sighed on the other end and I could feel empathy in her voice.

"If he makes you happy, then stay with him. I know Michael would be jealous and feel like Niall's stealing you away, but he's not a part of your life anymore and you need to accept that." She replied. It had been hardest on me losing my brother in the car wreck last year, and I'd almost avoided any real relationships because I was scared of losing someone again. But I knew I needed to move on, and Niall was just what I needed.

"Michael would be jealous. Do you worry that you'll lose me?" I asked. I thought of how after Marrietta had married her husband that she distanced herself from us. Some sister.

"I'm worried, but I know that you won't make that mistake. Just don't play with Niall's heart. If you love him, then stay with him. Michael can't take care of you anymore, and you need to learn to do that on your own. Listen, dinner's about to burn. Your father and I love you, and Joseph is signing the same. I'll give them all big hugs later. I love you and call me soon, alright?" She said in a rush.

"Love you, Mum." I sighed before hanging up and tossing my phone away. This was a hard decision to make, but I knew missing my brother shouldn't keep me from falling in love.

The worst part was that I've spent the past year and two months I've spent blaming myself for the car wreck. It was Christmas, five AM, and Michael and I were buying some last minute stocking stuffers. Joseph was buckled into the back seat and I was in the passenger seat, hugging my pillow to my stomach for warmth. Michael was making me watch for which street to turn on for the twenty-four hour Primark. I glanced up just in time to see it on the right. I yelled out for Michael to turn, and he spun the wheel. He was pressing the brake enough, though, and the car flipped. And here we are, a year later, with one brother dead, the other deaf, and me. Perfect me, with nothing left but a scar by my eye.

I heard a noise in the hall and ignored it, stuffing my head into my pillow. A good cry sounded good right about now.

NIALL

"Mum.... I just really miss him. Not a day goes by that I don't think about Michael. And I mean, Niall makes me so happy, but I just can't stop thinking about Michael. I feel like the reason he's gone is my fault." Ally said into the phone. I pressed my hands over my ears and sunk down to the ground. I pressed so hard that a ringing filled my ears, but I didn't care. Ally was still in love with some guy named Michael, she was just using me. She didn't care about me at all. I felt tears sting the back of my eyes, and I knew I shouldn't cry, but I did anyway. The tears made angry stains on my cheeks as I sat there in the hall.

"Niall?" Liam asked, walking up to me and giving a nervous expression. I swiped the tears off my cheeks and got to my feet, dusting off my jeans. Liam frowned. "You okay, ma-"

"I'm fine. I'm fine." I said, letting out a deep breath and looking around. I heard Ally say goodbye to her mum and decided that it would be best if she didn't find me evesdropping. Quickly, I patted Liam on the back in farewell and started jogging down the hall.

"Where you going, man?" Liam called. I glanced over my shoulder at him and thought for a second.

"No clue." I called in response. It didn't matter as long as it wasn't here.
