Rachel lives and breathes the world of magic. As an heir to the throne of a secret werewolf culture, she stands in the doorway to the spirit world, staring in the face of things her pack can only imagine. That is the way. Her parents understand, as does the next Alpha, Andrew, her predestined soulmate. But when the scale is tipped out of balance, they're both placed in a race against time to save their pack and everything they have ever known, plagued by a question of morality: What is right? Or, more importantly, what's wrong?

2. Andrew

I was the first to arrive at the Moon-grounds, my father arriving a few hours later. As Alphas, it was our job to check the forest for any other predators that could attack our children or elderly. Just one of an endless list of duties, and I was happy to perform them all.

“Andrew, son,” laughed Dad when he saw me, pulling me into a quick hug. “Well, now, how's college?”

“Definitely different from our teaching methods,” I told him, inhaling deeply. I could smell the turn of the season as we abandoned winter and fell deeper into spring. With it came budding flowers, young animals, a bear a few miles away as it stretched and yawned its way out of hibernation. Nothing unusual, nothing different. “Oh, it's good to be home.”

Dad nodded and motioned at the forest. “You'll be Alpha of this next year, no doubt.”

I turned to him in shock. “What are you saying? Do you mean...?”

“Yes. Your mother is going to be planning the wedding with Rachel after her Change. You'll be married by next spring.” He waited for the news to fully sink it, but it was taking me longer than he expected. “You know, when I was your age, I couldn't wait to marry your mother.”

“No, I—I can't wait. I've just been waiting so long, I hadn't thought—By next spring?” I asked, thrilled when he nodded. “Oh, yes! Yes! Thank you. I can't—Thank you!”

Too excited for this two-legged body, I stripped as I ran for the forest, leaping across the earth and landing on my front paws easily. I threw back my head and howled, sending flocks of birds to the sky around me. I bounded forward, earth in my paws, as the forest raced before my eyes.

I was going to be married. Soon, I would be the Alpha I had strengthened myself to be, with Rachel as my queen.
