11. Out in the Cold

Four Months Later

Harry’s POV

Finally it had ended. The tour was over and I was going back to college as me. I finally had another break of being “THE Harry Styles” and I could just be Sam’s Hazza again. I couldn’t wait to get back and see her beautiful face again. I needed to explain to her what happened, but she’s so understanding, I’m sure she’d just take me back and love me again, and I couldn’t wait for it!

Niall, Liam and I were chattering away the whole ride home, about how we’d finally be with the girls again. I was jealous of them though, they had been able to talk to their girls the whole four months. Paul and Simon had put a restriction on Sam and me talking. Why? I have no idea, but they did, and now finally that terrible streak was over.

Finally the limo arrived at the school, and I jumped out with my last bag of luggage that hadn’t been moved back in. I waltzed through the door, expecting Sam to be there, because we always seemed to run into each other like that. But when I walked in, she wasn’t there. I saw Justine and Bridget though, waiting for Liam and Niall, who walked in after me, and the boys dropped their things and ran to hold their girls again. Where was Sam? I know the girls weren’t allowed to tell Sam anything, but where could she be without her two best friends?

“Hey, sorry to ruin the love fest, but where is my girlfriend?” I asked the others, looking at the door, not receiving a response. I looked over to see Niall and Bridget were making out, probably making up for four months lost, and Justine and Liam were walking up to Justine’s room, talking about watching some movies together and snuggling. I decided to walk outside to clear my mind.

I looked at my phone, and saw it was 12:30pm. That’s it! She’s probably at work! I started running towards the café, hoping she’d still be working there. It took about three minutes, and I was back. I burst through the door, and I saw her.

She was wearing the black and white tiered dress I chose for her to wear on her first day, over six months ago. She had a jacket on the back of her chair, considering it’s now December and freezing here. She was singing a song she wrote, I recognized it immediately. It was about some boy she used to know, but she hadn’t seen him in a few years.

The way her voice flowed through me, going from my ears to my heart, killed me on the inside. How had I survived living without her for four months? How was I stopping myself from running to her now? Her beautiful face was killing my heart, and stifling my lungs. Her song soon ended, and she looked up into the packed room that was now crazily applauding. I was so proud of her; the café had never been this packed before. Phil must be ecstatic with his business. Sam was beaming from ear to ear, and then stood.

She grabbed the microphone. “Thank you so much everyone! So that was an original song by me. I wrote it a few years ago, before I moved to London!”

Then suddenly a voice shocked me from behind her on the stage that I hadn’t noticed before. Phil had given away my job? It was a man’s voice. “Who was that song about again?” he said with a flirty tone in his voice. I was immediately taken aback. Who does he think he is?

“Dan! I said you couldn’t tell anyone!” she squealed as she playfully hit the boy on the knee, turning the color I always made her turn. Wait the name she just spoke. His name is Dan. The song was about a boy named Dan. The man on the stage got up and hugged her, and I recognized him from a picture that had been on her wall. This was the Dan she wrote the song about.

She giggled when he hugged her and the audience ‘aww’d!’ “Daniel! I said we were going to try to be professional today! What song next?” she asked him. The audience started chanting a song name really quietly at first, starting to get louder so I could hear it. They were chanting for a song called ‘Forever’.

“You guys must be regulars, we don’t play that a lot!” said Dan. He’s wearing a pair of black jeans, a white T-shirt and a black blazer; he looks like I did my first day. “So for those of you who don’t know, ‘Forever’ is a song Sam and I recorded at our college down the street, and we’ve performed it here a few times. Sam and I wrote, recorded, and perform this music. So here it is, we hope you enjoy it!”

They each grabbed a microphone, and looked deeply in each other’s eyes.

Sam’s POV

I looked into his eyes and we song the words together, our words. I can’t describe what these words mean to me. They mean everything to both of us. We wrote it one night when we were laying under the stars with my guitar, and then we recorded it with over 20 instruments later that week with our voices. We also had the instruments record it so we could have a karaoke version.

The song is about how we fell in love, the summers we spent together when we were younger, and how now today how we spend every day with the person we love more than anyone in the world. It’s an upbeat song, very face paced, and perfect, if I do say so myself.

After we finished everyone started clapping, but then something went wrong, girls started screaming, but it wasn’t for Dan or I. I looked to the back of the room where girls started running. The boy who was trying to now run to the front had brown curly hair and eyes like emeralds. It was the one who had broken my heart, the one who had left me, who had departed and never felt the need to call or even look back. I never got a call or a message to tell me where he was, until Niall or Liam tweeted. I never knew where he was unless they were tweeting.

And now he was ruining the best show Dan and I have had since the first semester started, where I talked to Phil and got him to give Dan Harry’s job. He was so impressed with Dan’s voice, that it didn’t take nearly as much asking as I thought it would.

Soon the place was emptied, one hour before we were supposed to close. “I’m sorry kiddos; I guess One Direction is back in town. You can both go home early. See you tomorrow after school,” Phil told us. Dan grabbed my hand and smiled at me.

“I know it didn’t last as long as we would have liked, but it was the greatest show we’ve ever had. I’m proud of us!” he said as he kissed me on the cheek. I smiled and we departed, hand in hand. We walked down laughing about how Daniel’s voice cracked twice today, I always joke with him when that happens. We also laughed about how one time I fell off the stage. We stopped at Starbucks to get a quick latte before we headed home.

Dan’s POV

We arrived back at the building, everyone from school hanging around the building, considering our flats are in the middle of the big field in the middle of campus. There were people everywhere, playing Frisbee, and playing instruments, practicing dance routines, doing everything you could imagine. I love it at this school. And having Sam’s hand in mine, nothing in my world could have been better. But something seemed off in her world.

“Hey baby, are you okay?” I asked her. She looked up at me with those eyes that always looked into my soul.

                “I’m okay…”

“Don’t lie to me,” I said to her sternly, but not harshly.

“You know how Phil said One Direction is back in town? Well I’m not sure if you caught up on this, but Justine and Bridget are dating two members from that band. And I was dating one before you moved in. Do you remember when I was crying about him the first day?” I nodded. “Well, he’s back. And I saw him when he ran out of the café just now. He’s back, Dan. And I’m scared,” she started shuttering and crying, and I held her in my arms.

“I’ll keep him from you, I’ll keep you safe and protected. He won’t hurt you again Sam, I promise.”

I swear to God, when I see this man, I am going to hurt him. He killed Sam on the inside out, and now I was going to get him. Suddenly, Sam turned around while we sat together on the field.

Sam’s POV

Someone tapped me on the back, and without thinking, I turned and saw him standing before me. His green eyes pouring into mine, bringing me back to the last time I saw him.

“Promise me you’ll never leave me for that long again?” He had said to me. Who would have known that he would have been the one to desert me?

He looked a bit taken aback when I didn’t hug him immediately. “Hey Sam,” he said, putting his hands in his pockets. I just looked at him. “I’m back,” he said, trying to make me break my silence. What did he expect me to do? Jump into his arms? Thank him for coming back and saving me? Kiss his lips and leave Dan? No, not me. He’s known since he met me, I’m not that kind of girl.

“Hi, are you the new student that will be joining my building?” I asked, looking innocent. He laughed, very nervously.

“Oh come on, Sam. Don’t be like that,” he tried to wrap his arms around me and hug me, but I shrugged away.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t talk to strangers. And I have a boyfriend, sorry!” I said as I shrugged to him. I stood up, helped Daniel up, and we walked into the building, leaving Harry completely out in the cold.
