3. Beautiful Day for a Song

Sam’s POV

I woke up with the sunshine from the window shining on my face. It’s a beautiful feeling, waking up your first day of summer and knowing you don’t have to wake up early for the rest of three months. Except today I am on a mission. I am going out to find a job somewhere. Considering I’m in college on a full scholarship, I don’t need to worry about the pay too much. I only need money for food and leisure, and the rest is paid for. I decided I should get an early start, so I brushed through my ginger hair and threw on some makeup. I also put on a pink and silver sundress with sandals and a necklace, and after I brushed my teeth I was ready to go. I walked out of the flat to see that on my floor, there was some luggage that the dean’s assistants were loading into a room. It looks as though one of my roommates would be showing up within the next few days.

I walked outside, a smile spread across my face, and my portfolio in hands. It contained my qualifications, certificates, and letters of recommendation, health reports, and about 20 copies of each. I made sure I was prepared to look for a job when I left New Hampshire.

I started walking through downtown London when I came across a Starbucks. I decided to stop for a peppermint mocha frappe because it was already getting pretty hot out, so I decided to sit at a table outside by myself and catch up on gossip from home. As I opened my iPhone and started scrolling through Instagram, all I read about is about the band One Direction is taking a year break. Apparently it’s a pretty big deal. I didn’t really know anything about that though, I was more into Broadway than pop or rock or whatever they are.

Then I overheard a conversation behind me. “Linda! Did you hear about the boys?” screeched a teenage girl running up to another teen girl behind me. The girl was a mess. She was beautiful, but she had lots of mascara running down her face. I looked over at her friend, and she had mascara running too.

“I can’t believe it!” said the other girl. They then held each other and started crying menacingly. I sighed and turned around. I couldn’t believe how crazy girls can get over some super star.

It’s always the same. The fans all fangirl over the famous boys, and then one day you meet them, and they turn out to be complete jerks. I’m sure that’s all Harry, Zain, Lewis, Liam and that blonde one are. I thought to myself.

I continued to enjoy my peppermint mocha as the sun shone on my face. I decided now that it was 11am; most shops would be open so I could start looking. I brought my peppermint mocha into my hands and I started walking. I have to admit, London is really nice.

I was walking down Main Street when I spotted a Delia’s and Forever21 with signs on the doors saying “Now Hiring!” So I walked into Delia’s first to submit my resume. They seemed fairly interested, but I continued submitting my resume at Forever21 after. I then submitted my resume to a few more random shops and boutiques I found along the way.

As I walked along the long strip, I reached the last building downtown; it was a cute little café. I decided to take a look in. I saw a piano and a guitar on the stage. I read on the wall it’s a musical cafe. Hm, I’d have to come here more. I thought to myself. I submitted my resume to be a performer, or waitress or whatever they needed, and then started departing back to my flat at the college.

Harry’s POV

I felt in a daze. The band was everything I’ve known for the last two years. I know that Simon set me up with a full ride to a performing arts school, and that it was what I wanted before the band. But what was I going to do without my boys? I didn’t lose my friends when the band started, I never meant to trade one life for another, but when you’re on tour with the same four boys for two years, they tend to become your best friends. And that’s what they are.

It kind of sucks that because a few of us were fighting we have to take a year off of the band. I mean, obviously Simon and Paul are probably going to only make us take three months for just the summer, but still. That’s a long time for us. What am I going to do for summer without them? I mean, once the school year starts I’d have classes, but what if no one ever treats me the same again?

Suddenly I past what used to be my favorite café. It was the musical one on Main Street. I hadn’t come since One Direction. I’d missed it. I walked in. It still smelled the same, coffee and sugar. I saw a sign on the wall that said ‘Now Hiring!’ And I walked up to the desk where the owner Phil was.

“Harry Styles!” said the man; thank goodness the café was almost empty. I walked over to him and gave him a bro hug.

“Hey Phil! How have you been man?” I asked him.

“Good, business is going well. My daughters have become such a big fans of you and the boys, they don’t believe me that I know you!” Phil said.

“Well, the boys and I are taking some time off the band,” I told him.

“Oh no! The girls are going to be broken hearted!” he said.

“I am very sorry, but it’s managements choice, not ours. And I was wondering, I’m going to be going to college down the street now. Is there anyway…”

“You’ve got the job sir! I have one other to hire, but I think I’m hiring a girl who will be in school with you in the fall! Her name’s Sam Taylor, have you met her yet?” I shook my head. “She’s going to school with you in the fall on a full ride like you.”

“Huh, she’s going to be in my building then. I’m going to have to make a point to meet her,” I thought out loud. “Well, I am going to head home and start packing to move. I will see you Monday for my first day of work Phil!”

With that I departed, unable to get the name Sam Taylor out of my brain. It just swirled through my head like a catchy song lyric.
