I Know You're There

At every single school, there's always an emo that gets bullied. The one at Tori's school is different. He still gets bullied, and he never speaks, and no one ever sees him outside of school. There are rumours. Many of them. The main one, his parents have abandoned him. Tori starts suspecting that he lives in the abandoned house next to hers. As she starts getting close to him, and unveiling the horrific truth, she realised his pure beauty. If only everyone else could too...

7. 'You're an amazing liar.'

We managed to get a table, it was the rush hour, so people weren't really ready for dinner at 5:45. It was still quite busy. There was only two of us, so we didn't really take up much of the left over space.

Reuben went up and ordered for us, before coming back and sitting down with me. He'd pushed his hair back under a grey slouch beanie. I felt embarrassed, looking around the room. I was just in some jeans and a massive hoody. Not a very good look for a first date. Underneath I was wearing a black and white chequered shirt, so I decided to take the hoody off. That improved my look.

My phone buzzed for quite a while, meaning that someone was calling me. I decided to answer it, in case it was something important. I quickly apologised to Reuben and pressed the answer button.

"Tori, where are you?" Emily-Rose giggled down the phone.

Loud music and cheering sounded in the background, almost deafening me.

"Uh... Sorry, I'm on a date," I answered, holding the phone a little further away from my ear.

"Who with?" she asked, turning a little serious.

Reuben shook his head, quite quickly. So quickly, that his beanie fell off, and he had to pick it up from his shoulders.

"Just a... guy," I wasn't very good at lying.

"And which guy would that be?" her tone changed a bit sarcastic and I got a little annoyed.

"Talk to you about it on Monday, I'm being rude," I finally came up with a good excuse and hung up before I heard any further protests.

I was in deep trouble when we went back to school. Ah well.

"You're an amazing liar," Reuben said sarcastically, but he laughed so it wasn't rude.

"Yep, I'm in major trouble with her," I laughed too. I actually didn't care what Emily had to say.

Reuben sighed, as if he was trying to think, "Don't tell anyone it's me. You'll just end up like me."

I scoffed, and shook my head, "I don't care!"

"Well, I do," he retorted.

He leant back in his chair, pleased that he'd won the argument. My popularity was something quite pathetic to argue over. It was hardly an argument anyway. It was more of a disagreement.

I was deep in thought, when our food arrived. I'd ordered mild, I wasn't one for spice. Reuben had ordered one below the hottest, which I was impressed with.

The 'disagreement' seemed to vanish, and we relaxed again, chatting, eating, just like an old couple. One of those couples where people look at you and say 'They're still together?'. All I wanted was for someone to love me in a boyfriend/girlfriend way. Maybe I'd put it on my Christmas list... What would I get Reuben for Christmas? When's his birthday? What food does he like? Well, obviously Nando's...

"When's your birthday?" I managed to weave it into our conversation, trying not to make it too obvious.

"The thirtieth of November, you?" he smiled, and it was clear that he knew why I was asking.

"February first," I replied.

Wait- his birthday was twenty five days away. That was not enough time for someone like me. Girls need quite a while to decide on presents. Plus, I didn't really know much about Reuben. What do guys even like? What would I buy Ollie? I seemed to have forgotten every present I'd ever bought or even considered. I couldn't ask a friend for advice either, because Reuben seriously wasn't letting me tell anyone. Maybe it could be one of those dramatic movie scenes, where someone's been dating for months, then they finally tell everyone in a cool way. That doesn't happen to people like me...

"Are you ready to leave?" he asked well after we'd finished dessert.

Like always, conversation flowed easily, laughs came quickly, and we were both completely different people around each other. Not different in a bad way, just the true us. Around my friends I had to be this bitch who only cares about herself. In reality, I was the complete opposite.

"Yeah, sure," we got up, once Reuben ever so kindly paid for me, and started walking back to mine.

We walked along the pavement, our fingers interlocked. Not a moment of silence passed, only when we laughed so much no noise came out. Some other people walking along gave us sidelong glances, but we didn't care.

It was about nine, and we were walking quite slowly. That was utterly fine by me. If I could, I'd stay out all night with Reuben, but my parents would not be impressed with that. Would I tell my parents I went out with him? Would I tell anyone? Too many flipping questions.

I sighed quietly as we reached my house. I wished I could live further away.

Reuben walked me to my front door, smiling a cute, crooked smile. I was stood on my doorstep, but Reuben was still three inches taller than me.

"I really like you," he looked at the floor, blushing.

"I really like you, too," I almost laughed at how cheesy we were being.

"Will you be my girlfriend?" he looked up, cocking his head on one side, making direct eye contact.

"Yes," I immediately answered, pulling him into a massive hug.

We both laughed, my voice muffled by his shoulder. His arms were around my waist, and mine were around his neck. He smelt like a soft cinnamon with a hint of musk. It mixed well, and I happily breathed it in. I buried my face into his shoulder, not wanting to let go.

Ever so slowly, he pulled back, a smile still on his face. His arms were still around me though.

Too quick for me to keep track of, he leant in and softly pressed his lips to mine. Before I could kiss him back, he pulled away. My lips tingled from his touch, and butterflies erupted in my stomach. I looked away, blushing.

"Tori! Get in here!" Ollie opened the front door, and dragged me in by my arm.

"Bye! I called out quickly.

"Bye, love," he answered, just as the door slammed shut.

Ollie must have been spying on us.

I didn't care. The butterflies were still dancing in my stomach, and I couldn't wipe the smile off of my face. I had a boyfriend. A sweet, gentleman, good looking boyfriend. That's something to tick off of my Christmas list.
