I Know You're There

At every single school, there's always an emo that gets bullied. The one at Tori's school is different. He still gets bullied, and he never speaks, and no one ever sees him outside of school. There are rumours. Many of them. The main one, his parents have abandoned him. Tori starts suspecting that he lives in the abandoned house next to hers. As she starts getting close to him, and unveiling the horrific truth, she realised his pure beauty. If only everyone else could too...

19. 'I need to apologise.'

The week passed really quickly, mainly because I was asleep most of the time. I'd been doped up on anaesthetic and other pain reliefs. The stitching on my chest formed a little cross, and it was sealing up quickly, but I'd be scarred for life. The whole time I was in the hospital, someone was always with me, and it was usually Ollie. He'd apologised numerous times over Daniel, even though it had nothing to do with him.

"Are you sure you're ready to go home?" Ollie double checked with me.

It was Christmas eve, and I wanted to be home on Christmas. It wouldn't be fair on the others if they were stuck in a hospital on Christmas day.

"Yep," I popped the 'p', and held onto Cade's thick arm.

I was slightly scared, and I didn't really know why. There was just something tugging at my new heart, telling me this wasn't right. Not that it wasn't right to finally go home, just like something was missing. I pushed that thought away, and got into Cade's car, behind Bella. She held my hand, squeezing it occasionally. The sky was darkening, and a little bit of excitement started crawling in me. After all, it was almost Christmas.

"I'm going to go see Reuben," I told them all as they walked inside.

"I'm going with you, I need to apologise," Ollie said, turning red.

I nodded in agreement, and watched Bella close the front door behind her. I was kind of scared of Ollie's reaction to Reuben's... home. He followed me silently.

I could see a little bit of shock in his green eyes, but he didn't make much of a reaction. Softly, I knocked on the door. He didn't answer, so I knocked again, a little harder. Still no reply. I pushed the door open, and walked in.

"Reuben?!" I called out.

Still, no reply. Sighing, I grabbed Ollie's phone from him, and dialled Reuben's number, knowing it off by heart. I heard his ring tone go off, and it was from upstairs. So, he was in, he just didn't want to answer to me. I got a little annoyed, expecting more sympathy than that.

I dragged Ollie up the stairs, almost laughing at him. He was genuinely scared of that place. If I didn't go there so often, I'd be scared of it too. After all, cobwebs do lurk in every corner, along with a battalion of spiders. I shivered at the thought of arachnids, and turned into Reuben's room. His phone lay on the bed, 'Unknown Number' displayed across the screen. He was not there.

I looked around the room, as if checking to see if he was hiding. Ollie stayed silent. Reuben's guitar was in it's case, propped against the wall. His clothes were dotted around, quite messed up. It looked like no one had been there for days. Something was telling me no one had been there for days.

Lying beside his phone, was an envelope. Slowly, I walked over to the bed, and picked the letter up. It had collected quite a lot of dust, as it came off on my fingertips when I touched it. I swallowed the lump in my throat and turned it over, so the front was facing me.

In Reuben's Calligraphic font, he'd scrawled 'Tori' across the front.
