I Know You're There

At every single school, there's always an emo that gets bullied. The one at Tori's school is different. He still gets bullied, and he never speaks, and no one ever sees him outside of school. There are rumours. Many of them. The main one, his parents have abandoned him. Tori starts suspecting that he lives in the abandoned house next to hers. As she starts getting close to him, and unveiling the horrific truth, she realised his pure beauty. If only everyone else could too...

15. 'I missed your cooking.'

It had been five days, December the fourteenth, when Cade finally came down. Reuben and I were continuing like when I was going out with Daniel. The up all nights at his place. It was always quite awkward. It was like we were drifting apart. All because he was an emo. Pathetic really. Well, not pathetic that he's an emo, pathetic that people bully him for it.

Cade pulled up in his car, driving slowly because our parents were there. I knew that otherwise, he'd drive like a maniac. His car wasn't very flashy or expensive, just a Peugeot 106. I could see his girlfriend, Bella, sitting in the passenger seat. I liked Bella. She was funny, polite, quite shy, just a generally good person. How she put up with Cade, I did not know. She was stunning as well. Like I said, why Cade?

He got out of the car, shoving the keys in his pocket. Before he could do anything, I leapt into his arms, wrapping my legs around his waist. He was tall, I was short. Seriously, he was about a foot and a half taller than me.

"Someone missed me," he laughed, rubbing my back.

"No, I missed your cooking," I replied, burying my face in the crook of his neck.

He chuckled, his deep raspy laugh, and put me down, gently. He made some rude comment on my outfit, so I just 'playfully' punched his arm. I saw him wince, and I smiled to myself.

Cade was greeted by Ollie and my parents, and we went inside. Well, Cade didn't. Bella came in, but we left Cade to get the bags and everything. It was bitterly cold outside, so I was avoiding it at all costs. Hopefully it would snow soon. Cold weather is horrible, but I'd make an exception if it snowed.

I showed Bella Cade's old room, even though she'd seen it before. I just needed to talk to her. She lay her bag on his bed, and sat next to it.

"So, what's new?" she asked, crossing her legs.

She was a year older than Cade, twenty seven, but she looked a whole lot younger than him.

"I've got a bit of a story for you," I smiled sheepishly, and sat with her.

"Go ahead," she swept her hands to the side, gesturing for me to begin my tale.

"Okay... There's this guy... and I really, really like him. He likes me too, but he doesn't want me to be his girlfriend, that's an even longer story. Oh, never mind, it's too complicated," I huffed, and folded my arms across my chest.

"Explain every thing from the day you met him, to now," she ordered me.

Bella's raven hair was pulled back into a ponytail, and her dark eyes were so innocent. I sighed, and thought for a minute. Should I, or shouldn't I? I took a few deep breaths.

"It started in school..." I told her every single thing that had happened with Reuben, and Daniel, up until that very moment. I even told her what Daniel had done to me. She stayed silent the whole time, waiting patiently for me to finish. It took me about twenty minutes to tell her all of it, yet she still stayed silent. I cried a couple times, but I just wiped the tears away. Once I had finished, it felt like a ton of weight had been removed from me. I could breathe properly again; at last.

She opened her mouth to speak, but Cade walked in, attempting to drag all of the suitcases in at the same time. Bella smiled wryly, and helped him. I just stayed sitting there, thinking. I really shouldn't have told her. She'd tell someone else. Bella gestured for me to follow her, and I obeyed.

We sat at the table, my entire family together once again, but someone was missing. Reuben. It actually physically hurt me, not being with him. Even when we were together, it was just awkward anyway. It's not fair. Why can't love be easy?

Bella hadn't said anything, and I didn't think she would. I talked myself into worry, when I knew there was nothing to worry about. I trusted Bella, and she'd keep it a secret, and talk to me about it once we had the chance. We ate, sat back, and chatted, together, as a family. I really wanted Reuben to be there, but that wouldn't happen. Nothing would ever happen between us. I needed to get that fact down. Reuben had his life, I had mine. But there was one thing left to do.

Why was he living there?
