I Know You're There

At every single school, there's always an emo that gets bullied. The one at Tori's school is different. He still gets bullied, and he never speaks, and no one ever sees him outside of school. There are rumours. Many of them. The main one, his parents have abandoned him. Tori starts suspecting that he lives in the abandoned house next to hers. As she starts getting close to him, and unveiling the horrific truth, she realised his pure beauty. If only everyone else could too...

24. 'Everyone knows a fallen angel, but no one knows who it is.'

My heart stopped, and I flung my arms around him. I didn't care if I was imagining him, I just wanted to hold him one more time. My heart started beating again, but it was all fluttery and stuttering. He chuckled slightly, and hugged me back, rubbing my back. The rain seemed to disappear to the back of my mind, along with everything else. I could smell that cinnamon scent on him, and for the first time in nine months, I smiled.

"I'm back for five minutes, and I've already saved your life," he said, not letting go.

I didn't want him to go, I wanted to stay there, in the pouring rain, for the rest of my life. I heard Doctor Taylor yell my name from the other side of the road, and I quickly pulled away. He was coming towards us. Reuben could tell what was going on, and grabbed my hand. We began running down the street, chased by my Psychiatrist. This was weird.

Reuben suddenly stopped, and pushed me into a car. It was obviously new, as it was extremely clean, and had that new car smell. The seats were plush leather, but I didn't have chance to see the outside. Reuben got in the other side, and shoved some keys into the ignition. I gave him a questioning look.

"Retirement present," he answered my unspoken question.

"You're sixteen and you're retired," I laughed in disbelief.

I was still in shock, yet I acted like nothing new was happening. He pulled away from the kerb, and flicked the lights on. If he got pulled over, we were screwed. After all, in England, you have to seventeen to drive. I couldn't see Doctor Taylor any more, and I relaxed in my seat.

"You have a lot of explaining to do," I said into the silence.

"I know, sorry about that. How are you going to explain me to your parents?" he asked, picking the speed up.

I went silent, trying to think it through. There was actually no reasonable explanation as to why Reuben had come back to life. I couldn't tell them he was an Angel. Something popped into my mind, and I sat bolt upright.

"Let's run away!" I breathed.

He slammed his foot down, and the car screeched to a halt, "What?"

"I said-"

"I know what you said," he kept his eyes fixed on the road, and ignored the beeping horns behind us.

"So? Let's go!" I clapped my hands once, getting excited.

If we ran away, it would be so much easier. There wouldn't be anything to worry about. Well, maybe the police, but who cares!? If I got to be with Reuben, then I didn't care where I was. I didn't have much money, nor did he, but we would make it work. I knew where we could go.

"Reuben?" I whispered his name, trying to get an answer from him.

His eyes were as blue as ever, and shining with a new light.

"I have a few conditions, though," he said. So, that wasn't a definite yes or no.

When I didn't say anything, he continued, "First, you have to carry on going to school. I know a guy who can get us fake ID's. If we're caught, I take the entire blame. You will eat properly. Finally, you are not going to cut yourself ever again," he met my eyes.

I thought about it for a few moments. There wasn't anything particularly bad in there, except for him taking the blame. We wouldn't be caught anyway, so that didn't matter. Fake ID's would be good, and we had transport. I knew where we could go, and my life fell into place, like it was a puzzle waiting to be fixed.

"Deal," I said, putting my hand on top of his, on the hand brake.

He gave me that crooked smile, and turned his hand the other way around, locking our fingers together, "I love you."

"I love you, too," I smiled back.

Everyone knows a fallen angel, but no one knows who it is.

I knew mine, and I couldn't love him more.
