34. Wedding Day

2 years ago, 10 minutes before Sophie and Louis' wedding ceremony is to begin...

"Damn it Ashton, let me through!"

"No, Liam! You're going to ruin this for her!"

"You have no right t--"

"I have every fucking right! I'm her sister, it's my job to protect her!"

Liam and Sophie's maid-of-honor, her sister Ashton, were having a screaming match outside of Sophie's dressing room in the chapel. Well, not really a screaming match since they were actually just whispering very harshly at each other so that no one would hear and come investigate. Ashton knew about Liam and Sophie having been together, as Sophie told her everything. Ashton was very good at keeping her mouth shut though, and Sophie and Liam trusted her not to say anything. She was actually the only outside person who knew.

Ashton was wearing a beautiful long dress that was a faded shade of pink and had a floral designed sash going over her shoulder. Her firey red hair was in a fancy updo and her makeup was subtle but nice. She was no longer the impulsive model who did whatever she fancied, rather the responsible older sister trying to protect the soon-to-be bride.

Liam was looking dazzlingly fit in his tuxedo, as he was one of Louis' groomsmen. His vest hugged his torso tightly and the overcoat filled out his broad shoulders nicely. His hair had been trimmed especially for this event and was gelled up in a quiff, just like the other four boys' hair. He looked amazing, even with the furious expression on his face.

Liam had to speak to Sophie before she walked down that blasted aisle. He had to plead her one last time, offer her one last chance to stop this madness of marrying Louis. If she said "I do" to him, they would never another chance to be together. It would be over...forever. He had to try and show her just one more time that he loved her more, that he could give her better than Louis ever could. He had to tell her that he would do whatever it took just to change her mind, to be with him. He had to at least try.

"Ashton, please, I'm begging you." Liam's voice softened a bit, and he tried to get some mercy from Sophie's stubborn older sister.

Ashton just crossed her arms and looked at him smugly. She spat out her next words.

"Fuck. You." she said.

Liam inhaled sharply and threw his hands up in the air. He would never in his life hit a woman, but he did briefly consider slapping this bitch.

"Damn it, I just want to talk to her!" he shouted, then quickly looked around to make sure nobody had heard. He lowered his voice and leaned in close to Ashton, "I swear, I just want to talk to her, it's not like I'm not going to kidnap her for Christ's sake!"

Ashton threw her head back and laughed harshly. She was about to come back with a sarcastic retort, but thought better of it when Liam stood up to his full height and stepped up closer, towering over Ashton with a violent expression on his face.

"Ashton. Let. Me. In."

"I-I--" Ashton tried to stutter out a response, but was cut off by the sweet, small voice on the other side of the door she was trying desperately to keep Liam entry from.

"Ashton?" the voice called, and Liam's harsh look instantly changed to a softer one, and he looked expectantly at the closed door. It suddenly opened and he stopped breathing for a moment.

Sophie had never looked better in her entire life. Her sandy blonde hair was down, and curled to perfection. Her natural highlights caught the light perfectly and made it seem as though she were glowing. She didn't have much makeup on at all (per Louis' request), just some powder, light eyeshadow, and mascara. She also had on shimmery lip gloss that he wanted to taste so badly it physically hurt. The dress was pure white and strapless, shaped like a heart at the top, with sequins decorating the torso. As his eyes continued to scan down, he saw that it hugged her waist just perfectly, showing off all of her curves in all of the right places. The entire bottom half of the dress was in light ruffles, almost looking like feathers. She looked like a swan.

Sophie chuckled, and he quickly popped his head back up to look at her face. He couldn't even think straight as he stared at her gorgeous eyes. "You can pick your jaw up off the floor now Liam" she said with a slight giggle.

Ashton scoffed and rolled her eyes. "You can go on back in Soph, I was just telling Liam here to bugger off." With that, Ashton poked a finger in Liam's chest hard and tried to push him back. He looked down at her incredulously and held his ground.

"Who the hell do you think you are Ashton? It's not up to you whether or not--"

"Shut it! Both of you!" Sophie suddenly interrupted, and Ashton and Liam both whipped their heads around to face her. She sighed in irritation and said, "Liam, come on in" and went back into the dressing room, leaving the door open for him.

"But Sophie, he's just trying t--"

Liam shut up Ashton's annoying voice by shoving past her and into the dressing room, slamming the door shut behind him.

It was quiet inside the room. He watched Sophie gracefully walk over to a vanity and sit down. She looked down at all the various makeup items in front of her and chuckled. "Gosh I would kill to be able to wear some eyeliner, but Louis absolutely insisted that I not. The little jerk." She giggled yet again and looked in the mirror at Liam's reflection. He looked right back, and Sophie's breath hitched as she saw his expression.

It can only be described as pure pain. His eyebrows were furrowed at the middle and his eyes were glazed over with a mixture of imminent tears and lack of sleep. Luckily the boys' makeup artist was able to cover up the majority of the purple bags under his eyes. He still looked sinfully fit though. Just...miserable.

Sophie's smile faded as she gazed at Liam in the mirror. She flinched involuntarily when a single tear streaked down his beautiful face.

"Sophie..." he said, the pain so evident in his voice.

Sophie couldn't stay away any longer, she stood up quickly from the chair and began striding over to him. He met her halfway, matching her pace with two long strides and wrapping his arms around her small, petite frame. They embraced tighter than ever before, and he didn't even attempt to hold back the tears. His face was pressed into her hair, and he inhaled deeply, trying to memorize her scent just in case he was never able to hold her like this again. She melted her body into his, letting him support her just one more time. Their bodies molded together perfectly.

"Sophie please, just please..." he choked out weakly.

Sophie nuzzled her face into Liam's neck even more, squeezing his strong arm with her hand as if that would keep them together somehow.

"You know I w-would if I c-could" she stuttered out in between sobs.

Suddenly Liam pulled away, putting his hands on her bare arms and bending his knees to look her in the eyes. His expression was so hopeful as he hastily said, "But we can, Sophie! We can leave right now, just me and you! We can be together forever, just leave the world behind, like we always dreamed about. I'll take you anywhere Sophie, anywhere you wanna go, anywhere in the world, I'll make it happen. Let's do it Sophie, let's run away together!"

Sophie just looked down and shook her head sadly. "Oh Liam, that sounds great, but--"

"No more buts Sophie! Don't think about every little detail, let's just do it! Follow your heart and not your head for once!"

Sophie looked up at him sadly and saw that his expression was still full of hope. She couldn't do this anymore. She loved Liam, she truly did...but this had to end. There was no other option. And there was only one way to end it right then and there.

Sophie lied with everything she had.

"No, Liam." she began bluntly, and Liam's whole face contorted with painful shock, as if she had slapped him. She fought to keep her voice steady and firm as she continued, "I'm not going anywhere except down that aisle. We're done Liam. I...I just don't love you anymore, okay?"

Liam took a step back from her and clutched his stomach as though she had punched him right in the gut. She stood her ground though, and held her chin up. Her heart was screaming at her brain so loudly she thought she might pass out. Liam put a hand up against the wall to keep his balance. His knees were trembling.

"Sophie don't say that, don't say that. I know it's not true, it can't be. You-you said you loved me, you told me y--"

"Well it wasn't true." Sophie interrupted, keeping her voice even by some miracle. "I was confused Liam, I was just...confused. But not anymore, that's why I'm telling you this. We're...we're d-done. Accept that okay?"

"Sophie, no, please don't say that, please Sophie..." Liam pleaded, tears seeping out of his beautiful brown eyes. It took every fiber of Sophie's being not to reach out to him and say "I'm lying, of course I love you! Yes, take me away with you, yes!" But she couldn't. She had to lie, it was the only viable option to keep from hurting so many other people. It was the lesser of two evils. Or so she believed.

"I'm sorry Liam. I truly am." Sophie said bluntly, and she had to look away from Liam as his puppy dog eyes fluttered open and closed in pain. He was now fully supporting himself against the wall. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have a wedding to attend to. It's...it's over Liam. Goodbye."

And with that, Sophie walked out the door without looking at Liam again.

She steps out of the dressing room...

She walks through the double French doors into the chapel with Ashton at her side...

Down the aisle...

Liam follows discretely behind, and steps up next to Niall at his designated groomsman spot...

Niall gives a questioning look; Liam dismisses it with a wave of his hand...

Louis removes the veil, they each say their vows...

"I do"...

Everyone in the chapel cheers, and stands up to clap for the newlywed couple...

Louis and Sophie both beam, eminating the epitome of happiness.

It was truly a joyous occasion, for everyone.

Everyone that is, except for one Liam James Payne.

And ever since that fateful day, the day that Sophie and Louis walked out of the chapel arm-in arm as husband and wife, she can still hear Liam's soft voice in the back of her head, just barely audible, singing,

"Oh how I wish, that was me"
