40. Waiting Room

Back to 2016, Royal London Hospital...

"Welcome back to the BBC News Channel here on this gloomy day in London! We have just got received breaking news about the one and only Louis Tomlinson from One Direction, who has just been admitted to Royal London Hospital as of a mere ten minutes ago, and--"

Sophie and Liam both looked up to the TV up in the corner of the waiting room simultaneously. Sophie had her elbows propped up on her knees, resting her head in her hands and trying not to cry, while Liam was leaned back with his arm around her comfortingly, biting his nails. When they heard the BBC news anchor's voice in the background say Louis' name though, they both snapped their heads up in shock.

"How the fuck do they already know?!" Sophie shouted in disbelief.

"Apparently the 25 year old pop star was suffering a massive case of dehydration, depleting Oxygen levels, and even entered cardiac arrest for a full minute!"

Sophie stood up in anger, even though Liam tried to hold her back.

"Soph come on, they're just doing they're jobs."

Sophie turned around to face Liam with fury written all over her face, "But they're lying! He wasn't dead for a minute, it was just twenty seconds! Gosh, I just...damn the media!"

She plopped back down in the chair and sighed in frustration. She looked back up to the TV even though she knew she shouldn't.

"...and we have a BBC insider who has just informed us that Tomlinson's wife, Sophie Ayers-Tomlinson, and his bandmate Liam Payne are at the hospital. Bandmates Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Harry Styles are en route as well."

Sophie looked over at Liam questioningly. "I texted the boys and his mum when he left in the ambulance" he said simply.

She nodded in understanding and looked back up to the news.

"...just received some very scandalous pictures of Mrs. Tomlinson and Liam Payne, look here!"

Sophie squeaked and Liam held his breath, feeling as though he might pass out. They had pictures?!

Two pictures popped up on the screen side-by-side. The one on the left showed Sophie and Liam in a tight embrace, looking at each other intently, and the one on the right was Sophie holding onto Liam's hand like it was a lifering as they walked into the hospital.

Sophie exhaled in relief that there wasn't a photo of them kissing, and Liam muttered under his breath, "Damn paparazzi, everywhere we go..."

The news anchor came back on the screen and cheerfully said, "Well, Mr. Payne sure is being a good friend there isn't he? But is there more to this 'friendship' than meets the eye? Keep tuned in to BBC News Channel for any breaking news over Louis Tomlinson's critical condition, and check our website for more--"

The annoyingly chipper voice was silenced as Liam stood up and punched the power button on the TV, shutting it off. Sophie looked at him from underneath her long eyelashes and he just chuckled sadly as he walked back over and sat beside her again.

He plopped down with an exhalation of breath, and stretched his legs out in front of him, leaning back in the chair. Sophie put her head in her hands again.

A few minutes of tense silence passed. Sophie finally took a deep breath and leaned back in her chair, tears glistening in her eyes. Liam reached an arm around her and rubbed her arm comfortingly. Sophie leaned over on his shoulder and began to cry silent tears.

"Shh, shh" Liam said soothingly.

They sat like this for a couple minutes when Liam's phone vibrated, indicating he had a call.

"Don't you n-need to get that?" Sophie stuttered out, still laying on his shoulder.

"It can wait." Liam said.

Sophie chuckled and pulled herself back into an upright position, wiping her face with the back of her hand. "No, get it. It could be important."

Liam sighed and pulled his phone out of his pocket.

"Yeah?" he said brusquely, answering the call. "...Yeah, we're at Royal London...the first floor, outside the Emergency Room...he's in critical condition, not quite stable yet...I'm with Sophie, she--...you heard it on the radio?...Fuck..." Liam muttered the obscenity and raised a hand to his temple, closing his eyes and thinking hard. He paused for a few seconds then looked back up, "I'll make a statement to the media about it later, try to calm things down...No, don't put anything on Twitter yet...Alright mate, see you in five...Bye."

With that, Liam pressed the 'END' button and put his phone back in his pocket. "That was Harry," he said, "He's about four or five minutes away."

Sophie nodded and looked around the waiting room. There was such a depressing aura about the room, the white walls bare and the lights dim and gloomy. There were only four other people in the room: a young couple that were leaned close together, whispering intently. An older woman clutching her purse tightly to her chest and staring at the wall in front of her, her expression unreadable. Finally, there was a young boy who was sitting directly across the room from Sophie. He looked to be about six or seven years old. He had a magazine open in his lap, and he was looking at it intently, his short legs dangling above the floor and his hands under his rear. He had messy brown hair and he was biting his lip in an adorably cute way.

Sophie cocked her head to side and looked at him. Why was he all alone in the emergency waiting room? Shouldn't a parent or guardian be with him? Before she had time to think about what she was doing, Sophie stood up and began walking towards the little boy.

"Sophie? Soph, what are you doing?" Liam asked, but she paid him no mind. She was only about fifteen feet away from the boy and she sat down right next to him. He didn't look up and she didn't say anything for a moment.

"Hi," Sophie said finally, "my name's Sophie."

The little boy didn't look up from the magazine and simply replied, "My mom says I'm not supposed to talk to strangers" very seriously.

Sophie chuckled and said, "Oh yeah? My mom used to tell me the same thing. But I just told you my name, so maybe if you tell me your name we won't be strangers anymore?" Sophie tilted her head down towards him in anticipation and a few strands of her hair fell in front of her face.

The little boy looked up from the magazine and tilted his face up to Sophie's slowly. He studied her curiously and squinted his eyes and pursed his lips in deep thought.

"I guess that might work." He finally said, making Sophie smile. The little boy grinned too. "My name's Nathan."

Sophie laughed a bit and stuck out her hand towards Nathan. "Well Nathan, it is very nice to meet you."

Nathan looked down at her outstretched hand, concerned. He looked back up at her from under his long eyelashes for a few seconds before very cautiously putting his hand in her own and shaking it. Sophie smiled down at him again.

"See? Now we aren't strangers anymore."

While Sophie was talking to little Nathan, Liam was watching her carefully. She was talking to him so sweetly, and smiling down at him tenderly. He honestly hadn't even noticed the kid until Sophie had moved over to him, and he couldn't believe that he was all alone in this big hospital. Sophie obviously couldn't either, and she hadn't even had a second of hesitation before making her way over to the little boy.

As Liam watched Sophie's fluid movements, he couldn't help but stare, awestruck. She smiled at him so tenderly, and her eyes lit up. The tears were gone, and she was looking down at the little boy so sweetly. He seemed intimidated at first, but she said a few soft words and he finally looked up at her and smiled. After a few more words from Sophie and an outstretched hand, he finally grinned and shook it. Liam chuckled to himself and couldn't help but smile; only Sophie had the confidence to walk up to a random kid and turn his whole attitude around.

That was one of the things he loved about her. No matter how much Sophie may be hurting on the inside, she was always more concerned about someone else. Even if she was in pain, she would do everything in her power to try and make someone else happy if she could. That's just the kind of girl she was: compassionate, caring, sweet. He loved her for all of those qualities.

Sophie continued to talk to the little boy and soon they were laughing and smiling together. At one point, Sophie threw her head back and snorted a little bit, and Liam couldn't help but laugh at her too. The little boy pointed at her and chuckled, and Sophie quickly recovered and started tickling him, making him cackle.

She was so beautiful, not just on the outside, but on the inside too. She had the kindest heart he'd ever seen, and he desperately wished it belonged to him instead of Louis.

Suddenly someone chuckled deeply beside him, and Liam jumped in shock, the smile disappearing from his face as he looked up at Harry.

"Wipe the drool from your mouth, mate." Harry said cheekily, sitting down in the seat that Sophie had been previously occupying.

Liam chuckled and leaned back in his chair. His cheeks flushed red, he'd been caught staring.

"Sorry, guess I couldn't help it..." he replied, his sentence trailing off as he looked back at Sophie and the little boy, who were now looking at a magazine together. Her bangs fell down in front of her face, and he smiled to himself. She had no idea how beautiful she was.

Harry was staring at Liam, who was staring at Sophie. His friend had a look on his face that was the textbook expression of being in love. His mouth was parted, and his eyes twinkled as he gazed at Sophie, never taking his eyes off of her. He smiled when she smiled, and it was like he was oblivious to the rest of the world. He really loved her. For the past two weeks, Harry had thought the cheating had just been about sex, but no. This was serious, Liam had really fallen for her. Hard.

"Shit, Liam" Harry mumbled, making Liam start and look up at him.

"What?" Liam said incredulously, completely oblivious.

Harry laughed harshly and looked at Sophie, then back to Liam. "I don't understand how I didn't see it until now!" Harry shouted, and Liam just scoffed and turned his head towards Sophie again, propping his elbow up on his knee and resting his chin in his hand. "I'm serious Liam, it's so obvious that you're still in l--!"

"Shh!" Liam interrupted suddenly, sitting all the way up and turning his torso to face Harry, his eyes wide with worry.

Sophie heard Liam's interruption and turned her head away from Nathan to look up at the boys, her brow furrowed and her hair still in her face. She looked at Liam curiously and he just smiled and waved. She noticed Harry sitting there, and she smiled at him sadly and waved. Harry nodded in greeting and she turned back to Nathan.

Liam sighed and put his head down in his hands. A few silent seconds passed and it finally clicked inside Harry's head. He took in a breath as he made the realization, "She thinks you don't love her anymore...doesn't she?"

Liam was silent, and kept his head down. He finally sighed deeply and leaned back in the chair, looking up at the ceiling and exhaling slowly. He nodded.

Harry chuckled sarcastically and lifted his hand to rub his chin in deep thought.

"Well fuck Liam, care to make this any more complicated?"

As Sophie kept chatting with Nathan, she found out that his mother was in critical condition just like Louis. Nathan's father was apparently very abusive, and had come after Nathan with a baseball bat, but his mom had intervened, thus taking the tough blows. Luckily though, the neighbors had heard the commotion and had called the police before Nathan's mother was killed.

"The police took my dad away, and then they brought my mom here. They told me to sit here and be a good boy while they worked on Mom, then they handed me this magazine. But I can't read very good, so I've just been looking at the pictures."

Sophie took a deep breath and tried to keep from crying. This kid was just six years old, he didn't deserve to be in this position. He hadn't done anything wrong.

She managed to keep her composure though, and changed the subject, looking at the magazine with Nathan, laughing at the models in the advertisements with funny expressions on their faces.

After a minute or two, Sophie heard Liam say, "Shh!" loudly and she looked up. She'd almost forgotten about Liam. He looked back at her almost instantly and smiled in embarassment before giving a small wave. Sophie looked at him oddly, but then she saw Harry sitting beside him, propped up on his elbow, looking at her with almost...contempt. Sophie waved at him and he just nodded back without smiling. Sophie furrowed her brow and looked away, back to Nathan, who was saying something about one of his friends now. Sophie smiled down at him, messing with his silky brown hair as he chattered away. She couldn't explain why she felt a sudden connection with this boy, who she'd never met. He was so broken, and yet he didn't even see it.

He reminded her of Louis.

Fifteen minutes passed, and Niall and Zayn burst into the waiting room together, out of breath. They saw Harry and Liam, and immediately made their way over to their friends, who stood up as well.

"Hey, we got here as soon as we could," Niall said hurriedly. "Where's Soph?"

Liam nodded in Sophie's direction, "Over there."

All four boys looked to Sophie and Nathan, and Sophie looked up as well. She smiled meekly and leaned down to tell Nathan that she was going to be right back, she just had to talk to her friends.

"Who's the kid?" Zayn asked without looking away from Sophie, who was standing up now.

Liam shrugged. "I dunno, she just sorta started talking to him."

"Oh" was all Zayn said. They all knew how good natured Sophie was, so they weren't too terribly surprised.

Sophie made her way over to the boys and hugged Niall, Zayn, and Harry, saying, "I'm so glad you guys are here."

"Of course we're here love" Zayn said thoughtfully as he embraced her tightly.

"Yeah, he's our brother, we wouldn't be anywhere else" Niall said seriously, wrapping his arms around her shoulders and digging his face down into her neck in his signature 'Horan hug'.

Harry was quiet, but he still hugged Sophie hard.

Once Sophie had finished her round of hugging, she stepped back and looked at her four friends, sniffing to hold back the tears. Niall, Harry, Zayn, and of course, Liam were just as much her best friends as they were Louis'. For the past four years, she'd been to almost every concert, watched every interview, taken so many pictures there was no way she could possibly keep count, been a part of a million pranks, gone to several after-parties, award ceremonies, photoshoots. They were such a big part of her life. Sometimes she forgot that they were One Direction, because to her...they were her family.

"Hey who's the kid?" Zayn asked Sophie, lifting his head towards Nathan, who was drawing in a coloring book.

Sophie looked over her shoulder at Nathan and smiled meekly. "His name is Nathan," she said as she turned back around to face Zayn. "His mom is in ICU, and they just took his dad to jail for domestic abuse, so he's here all by himself."

"Oh my gosh" Niall mumbled, looking over at Nathan as well.

Sophie nodded. "Yeah, but I helped him get in touch with his mom's sister, and she should be here in a few minutes."

"Oh, well that's good I s'pose." Niall said, putting his hands in his pockets and looking around the room.

It was awkward for a couple seconds. The boys didn't know whether they should be mad at Sophie or not. But if they were mad at Sophie, shouldn't they be mad at Liam too...?

"FAMILY FOR TOMLINSON?" A nurse suddenly burst out of the door that led to the ICU and shouted, making Sophie and the boys jump.

"Uh, yes, that's us!" Sophie said hurriedly, speed walking over to the nurse with the clipboard who had spoken, the boys right at her heels.

"You're here for Louis Tomlinson?" the nurse asked.

Sophie gulped and nodded, crossing her arms over her chest in worry. Zayn reached a hand over and put it on her shoulder comfortingly, and she looked behind her and smiled at him, placing her hand over top of his.

"Alright Mr. Tomlinson is awake, but only one of you guys can come back to see him. Who's it gonna be?"

"That'll be her" Niall said immediately, indicating Sophie, before she even had a chance to say anything. She turned around and looked at him surprised. He just tilted his head down at her and said, "You need to talk to him right now Sophie. You need to clear the air before you chicken out, because we all know you will." Zayn and Harry nodded in agreement, and Liam looked down at his feet and rocked back and forth on his heels.

Sophie gulped and nodded. She turned back to the nurse, who was smiling kindly. "Alright then, come on back" the woman said, stepping back to hold open the door for Sophie.

Sophie stepped through the door and looked back over her shoulder at the boys, looking terrified.

"It'll be okay" Niall said, and Zayn and Harry gave her the thumbs up sign. Liam kept his head down.

Sophie just nodded and managed to squeak out, "Watch out for Nathan okay?" just as the door closed shut and she found herself in the middle of the ICU all by herself.
