Louis Doesn't Have To Know

Sophie Ayers never intended on meeting Louis, yet she was so thankful that she did. He showed her what it was to love, and how it was to BE loved. He healed her broken heart, and did it with that gorgeous smile on his face. But when Danielle and Liam break up and Sophie goes to comfort him, he tells Sophie it was because Danielle suspected him of having feelings for HER...and that his ex girlfriend wasn't wrong. Sophie soon finds herself caught in an addictive web of lies, schemes, and cheating. She falls in love with BOTH One Direction boys, and is unable to choose one over the other. Liam has an idea though: Louis doesn't have to know...right?

25. Shutting Out The World

Same day, Winter 2016, 11:26 a.m.:

Sophie was enveloped in darkness. Her eyelids felt like they weighed a million pounds, and she was too drained to even attempt to open them. At first she was numb all over, not knowing where she was. Her ears were buzzing and she couldn't hear anything. Was she dead?

Suddenly she began to regain her senses. She realized she was laying on her back, and it felt like the leather couch in her and Louis' living room. She was cold, having just a thin sheet thrown over her. She felt like a popsicle, except for her left hand, which was enveloped in a warm hand. She wanted to smile, knowing it was Louis holding her hand, but that usually simple task felt impossible.

Slowly, the buzzing began to leave her ears. At first she just heard low mumbling, and she didn't understand anything that was being said. As more time passed though, her hearing became clear again and she realized that there were several people in the room... and she recognized the voices.

Ding dong.

"Niall, will you grab the door?"

Ding dong.

"Why do I have to get it?"

"C'mon man, just get the door for him, he obviously doesn't wanna leave her."

Ding dong.

"Well I don't either, she's special to me t--"

Ding dong. Ding dong.

"Calm down mate, I got it."

"Thanks Harry."

"Lou, I'm sorry, I didn't mean t--"

"I know Niall. I know."

A few silent seconds passed, and heavy feet walked into the room.

"Hey Zayn, thanks for coming."

"Of course man, of course. So like...what happened?"

Sophie hears Louis sigh painfully and grip her hand a little tighter. "I don't know man, I just don't know. I went into the kitchen last night --well, this morning-- and she was just curled up crying. I'd heard her shouting when I was upstairs with Lilly, and I came down to check on her and she was just, she was just--"

Louis had began to cry again at this point, laying his head down over top of his hand, which was in turn still holding Sophie's hand. She could feel the hot tears dripping from his face, and she wanted to wake up and hold him, but she just...couldn't.

"Hey man, it's alright, she's gonna be okay." Sophie heard all the boys take a comforting step in towards Louis.

"Yeah Lou, the doc said she would wake up when she was ready, it'll be fine. Probably within a few hours now, don't worry."

"A doctor's been by?"

Louis sniffled and Sophie felt him raise his head up. He wiped away his tears and turned to answer Zayn. "Yeah, I called him right away. I described her...episode," Sophie felt him cringe at the memory, "to him and he said that she must've lost consciousness due to an overload of stress. He checked her vitals and she's technically fine, she's just...shutting out the world for a little while. He said that her mental state just needed a break and she would wake up whenever her mind fully 'recovers'."

"Well that's good! Well, I mean, not good, but it's not bad, you know? At least she's not like, hurt hurt, right?"

"Yeah...I s'pose it could've been worse. I just...I just wish I knew what was wrong, you know? I always give her space and let her handle her own personal issues, the ones that she doesn't want to share with me. And I pretend it doesn't bother me, but it kills me. I love her so much, and she's never really fully opened up to me. You know, she has this nightmare almost every night, and she's never told me what it is. ometimes she'll be looking through photos or something, and she'll just start crying to herself. When I ask her what's wrong, she just shrugs it off and tells me not to worry about it." A long pause passed and Louis sniffled again. "Why won't she open up to me, guys? Does she even really love me?"

Sophie wanted to wake up so bad, to really wake up. In her head, she was screaming, "YES! I DO LOVE YOU, I PROMISE!" but she couldn't move her body an inch.

Someone suddenly scoffed sarcastically from the corner of the room next to the door and Sophie could feel all the boys turn their heads.

"Louis, you're a fucking idiot."

That voice made Sophie stop breathing for a moment. She hadn't heard it in about a month, yet it haunted her dreams every night. That voice had the power to make her sob, scream, cry, and smile all at once. It was the voice of the man she loved against her own will. It was the voice of the only person she had lowered her walls for.

"Liam?" Niall asked.

Sophie heard him take a few steps into the room and stand behind the couch she had been placed on.

"I thought you were in France, what are you doing here?"

"I was, but I got the group text this morning, and hopped the first flight over."

Sophie felt Liam lean over the back of the couch and peer down at her face. She guessed he was only inches away. He brushed a hair back away from her face gently and she worried that the boys might actually hear her heart break.

"That means a lot mate. I know it'll mean a lot to her, too. Whenever she wakes up..." Louis whispered sadly.

"Yeah, of course..." Liam's hand lingered on Sophie's cheek for a moment, but then he moved it away and inhaled sharply, standing back up all the way. Then suddenly,

"But like I was saying Louis, you're a bloody idiot if you're actually questioning her love for you."

Louis let out a breath of disbelief at Liam's audacity. The other three boys got silent and the room became very tense.

"'Scuse me?" Louis asked, his voice so menacing, speaking in a way that none of his bandmates had ever heard before. "Who do you think you are acting like you know if she loves me or not? She's my wife, you don't know a damn thing." Those last two words were hissed through clenched teeth and Sophie felt Louis grip her hand so tight it began to hurt.

"Calm down Lou, I don't think he meant it like--"

Harry was cut off as Liam began to laugh. "Yes I did bloody mean it like that Harry! I know how Sophie feels about him better than she does, trust me."

Silence fell over the room again, and Louis' hand began to shake in anger. Very slowly, Louis let go of Sophie's hand (which she desperately tried to hold on to, but failed) and he stood up from the chair he'd been sitting in next to the couch. He made his way around to Liam, with all of the other boys too afraid to intervene, even though they knew they probably should. Liam firmly stood his ground with his chin held high, as Louis bowed up against him, their chests almsot touching. Louis' blue eyes were wide in anger and his whole body was trembling. Meanwhile, Liam was cool and collected, looking at his distraught friend in amusement.

"What the hell did you just say?" Louis asked slowly, keeping his voice low as possible, even though it was dripping in detest.

Liam gave Louis a crooked, smug grin and replied, "You heard me. I know Sophie better than she knows herself. Matter of fact, I bet I know her better than you do."

Harry took in a sharp breath before quickly covering his mouth with his hands, and Zayn and Niall just shook their heads in disbelief.

Suddenly, Lilly began to cry upstairs in her nursery.

"I got it, I got it!" Niall spat out as quickly as possible, dashing by the boys for the stairs and running up them two at a time in order to avoid the ensuing conflict.

Louis stepped even closer to Liam and basically spat his next words in his friend's face.

"And what would ever give you that idea, Payne?"

Liam hesitated, suddenly holding back. His breath hitched for a moment, but then his brain clicked and he exhaled. He was done being quiet. "Well if you must know, Louis, it's because at one point Sophie and I...well she and I were--"

"Louis?" The word was hardly audible, but the whole room reacted instantly.

Sophie was awake.
