32. Realizations

Back at Niall's flat, 2016...

"Sophie, wait. Come on Sophie will you just stop and think about what you're doing please? You're not thinking straight, you have to be rational about the situation. You heard what Harry said, just give him space, you have to think about this!"

Niall was saying all this to Sophie as he followed her around the guest room in his flat she had been occupying the past two weeks. She was looking for a clean shirt and frantically checking the time on her phone (which she had found confiscated in Niall's underwear drawer) every five seconds. Liam was supposed to be at Niall's flat any minute now, he only lived a few minutes away.

"Niall there's nothing to think about, something is wrong, I can feel it. I'm not just going to sit by and hope he's alright. And you're not going to stop me from leaving." Sophie said as she finally found a sweatshirt hanging over the door that led to the guest bathroom. She pulled her tshirt over her head, leaving her exposed in her bra (it was just Niall in the room after all) and was putting the sweatshirt on as Niall continued, "Sophie you don't know that anything's wrong, you're just using this as an excuse to go look for L--"

"Niall have you ever been in love?" Sophie suddenly spat out, turning abruptly and facing Niall. He lookd shocked at the random question, and barely managed to stutter out a "Been in w-what?"

"Been in love?" Sophie retorted smartly, placing her hands on her hips and cocking her head to the side. "Well? Have you?"

Niall just shook his head sadly and looked down at the floor.

"Then you don't know what it's like. You don't know what it's like to connect with another person on such a personal level that it mentally, emotionally, and physically pains you to know that they're hurting. Especially when they're hurting because of something you did. I know my actions were wrong Niall, I'll never try to make excuses for them, and I'll suffer the consequences without arguement. But I will never forgive myself if Louis is out there hurt and I don't go to him. Just because I made stupid choices doesn't mean that I don't love him with everything I have. Without him in my life, there's no telling where I would be right now. He's my heart, my soul, my life. I have to go to him and try to explain. Even if he tells me he never wants to see or speak to me again...he has to know. He has to know that it wasn't all a lie. Do you understand that Niall? Do you?"

Niall looked up at her finally and she saw that tears were pricking his eyes. He was so sensitive, and hearing about how much Sophie loved Louis broke his heart...he wanted that. Even if he'd never experienced love before, he was able to recognize it when it was right in front of him; and Sophie's love for Louis was plain as day.

"Alright Sophie." He managed to choke out. "Go get him, but please just...just be careful. Don't break him any more than he already is, okay?"

Now it was Sophie's turn to tear up and she rushed over to her sweet Irish friend and wrapped her arms around him in a hug, which he immediately returned. They were crying together now, and she nodded against his chest, mumbling, "Okay Niall. I promise."

Suddenly the two friends heard tires on the gravel driveway outside and they both looked up. Still holding each other, Niall looked down at Sophie and said, "Hey Soph..." She looked up at him. "Bring him back alright? Just...bring him back." Sophie nodded vigorously and embraced him once again, squeezing as tight as she could. When she heard two honks outside, she quickly broke it off and ran out of the room, not even looking back at her friend because she knew that seeing his tears would make it more difficult to stop her own.

As Sophie bounded down the steps whilst wiping her eyes, she made a mental note to focus on getting Louis back, and to not let any of her walls down with who she knew was waiting for her outside.

"Don't look in his eyes, don't touch him, do your best to not even talk to him, just don't Sophie..." she muttered to herself as she grabbed her coat and opened the front door.

Her breath hitched and she froze when she saw him. He was wearing dark jeans and a plain white tshirt with gray Supras on, and was leaning back against his flashy silver sports car. He had been kicking at the gravel on the ground but looked up as soon as she came out of the door. He looked so...sad. Yet there was also some anger behind that sadness.

"Hey Soph" Liam said shyly as he gave her a little wave from the car.

"Erm...hi" Sophie replied cautiously. She was still frozen on the front porch and Liam looked at her questioningly. "Oh, right" she suddenly said, waking up from her trance and jogging down the porch steps to his car.

Liam smiled big in spite of himself when she got close to him. She was in faded skinny jeans with paint stains on them, and had an oversized green sweater that said, "Oklahoma City". He chuckled when he realized it was Niall's, she'd been trying to steal it from him for years. Her hair was down in their natural blonde waves, and she didn't have any makeup on. She still looked flawless despite the purple bags under her eyes.

Sophie on the other hand was in serious pain. She flinched when she got closer to Liam and was able to see the damage to his face from two weeks ago. His left eye was completely black underneath the rim, his bottom lip was busted on the right side of his mouth, and there was a fading purple shadow on his right cheekbone. Louis had certainly done a number on him.

"Oh my God Liam!" she said in spite of herself as she stepped right up to him. Liam was confused at first, but then his face showed understanding.

"What? Oh, yeah, that. It's no big deal, really, the bruises are already going d-- ow, hey what are you doing?!"

Sophie closed the distance between them with a couple steps and grabbed his chin roughly, turning his head from side to side to survey the damage. His lip was healing and so was his cheek, but his eye looked the worst. Hopefully the media hadn't seen this yet.

"Shit, Liam" Sophie said under her breath as she finally let go of his chin and looked up at his eyes.

"Nah, 's not as bad as it looks" he mumbled, looking down at the ground and kicking the loose gravel with the toe of his expensive shoes. Sophie didn't look away from his face though.

"Why didn't you fight back?" her question was almost a whisper.

Liam looked back up at her in surprise.

"Soph, you know why." he said bluntly, and Sophie inhaled sharply. He was right, she did know why he let Louis beat the hell out of him. It was because if Liam had fought back, he would have really hurt Louis. And hurting Louis in any way would have in turn hurt Sophie, because she loved him. He would never do that, never. Even if it meant Louis pounding the crap out of him, dealing with a couple bruises, and avoiding the paparazzi for the next few weeks. It was worth it if he was protecting Sophie in some way. He loved her enough to sacrifice his own well being.

Liam noticed the tears threatening to spill over in Sophie's eyes and he quickly grabbed the sides of her face. "Hey, hey, none of that, none of that today alright?" he said soothingly, squishing Sophie's cheeks together. She looked down with her eyes and tried to shake her head, but Liam wouldn't let her.

"I can't help it Liam, what if he hates me, what if--"

"No what-ifs Sophie." he interrupted, his tone serious. She looked up at his big brown eyes again. "He doesn't hate you, the idiot loves you, more than I could ever dream of. I've accepted that. So we're going to go find him, explain this whole mess, and bring him back. Do you hear me?"

Sophie stared into the eyes of the man she loved. But she finally realized something...she didn't love Liam like she loved Louis; like she thought she had loved him all these years. She loved Liam in a completely different way, in a way she'd never known before, in a way she never knew existed. He meant the world to her, and she would always be there for him if he ever needed her, and she knew he felt the same way. She wanted him to be happy more than anything else in the world, but...she didn't want to be the one that made him happy, at least not in a romantic sense. That's what separated her love for Liam and her love for Louis. With Louis, she wanted to be the one to bring the smile to his face, she wanted to bet the reason for his laughter, his joy, his happiness. She loved them both, but in completely different ways. Sophie had finally won the battle over her own heart, and it belonged to Louis one hundred percent.

"Yeah Liam...I hear you." Sophie whispered quietly.

Liam stared down at her for a moment, also having his own epiphany. He loved Sophie, she was his world. But...sometimes you have to let go of what you love. Now if Sophie had said right then and there that she was done with Louis, and that she wanted Liam to take her far away so that they could be together forever without a worry in the world, he wouldn't have had a second thought whatsoever in doing just that. But he knew that wasn't going to happen, he was realistic about the situation. Sophie loved Louis, they had a kid together, they were a family. He wanted her happiness more than his own. And that was the only thing that made him capable of saying,

"Alright then. Let's go get your husband back."
