Louis Doesn't Have To Know

Sophie Ayers never intended on meeting Louis, yet she was so thankful that she did. He showed her what it was to love, and how it was to BE loved. He healed her broken heart, and did it with that gorgeous smile on his face. But when Danielle and Liam break up and Sophie goes to comfort him, he tells Sophie it was because Danielle suspected him of having feelings for HER...and that his ex girlfriend wasn't wrong. Sophie soon finds herself caught in an addictive web of lies, schemes, and cheating. She falls in love with BOTH One Direction boys, and is unable to choose one over the other. Liam has an idea though: Louis doesn't have to know...right?

1. Nighttime Memories

Winter 2016:

Sophie shot awake like a bat out of hell. She took a huge gulp of air in her lungs, feeling as though she was suffocating. Sitting herself up quickly, she grabbed the sheets tightly in her fists and looked around, realizing she was in her familiar bedroom.

"Fucking nightmare" she muttered to herself, putting her head in her hands and shaking the terrible dream out of her head. It was the same thing every time. She was running after Louis with every ounce of her strength, shouting for him as loud as she could, and yet she wasn't getting any closer or making any noise. Louis was turning about, looking for her and calling her name, but it was like he couldn't see her. She finally stops running, exhausted, realizing that she's never going to reach him. Tears stream down her face as she hoarsely whispers, "Louis, please" and he finally turns to face her. At first he seems so relieved, breaking out into a grin, but the grin quickly disappears and is replaced with disgust. He looks past her at something, and like every other time, she turns to look. Liam is standing there, glaring at Louis with what can only be described as pure hatred. He doesn't say anything, and Sophie whips back around to Louis. He is now holding their daughter, Lilly, in his arms. She wants to smile at the sight, but can't because Louis is looking at her as if she is pure scum. "How could you?" he asks her, detest dripping from his voice. Then there is a bright flash of white, and she wakes up in a cold sweat and tears.

Louis knows it's the same nightmare every time, but she never tells him what it entails. And he respects that.

He always says to her, "Babe you don't have to tell me now. But one day, when you're finally ready, I'll be here. I'll always be here." which makes her feel even more terrible, which she didn't think was possible.

Thinking about her adoring husband, she turns to where he usually sleeps beside her, and only sees the pulled back comforter, luminated by the moonlight streaking through the half closed window curtains. She puts her hand on the sheets and she can still feel his warmth. She smiles at this, he's always so warm.

"You're so warm, like my own personal sunshine" she told him one day when they were cooking together, and he came up behind her, wrapping his strong arms around his waist. He kissed her neck, nipping at the spot which he knew drove her insane every time. She moaned and reached a hand up behind her to grab his silky brown hair. He pulled his lips away from her neck and whispered huskily into Sophie's ear, "If I'm the sun, I only shine because of you." Needless to say, they didn't finish cooking that night.

Sophie sighed and threw the warm blankets off of her, hopping off the tall king sized bed that she and Lou had picked out together. She was only wearing one of his tshirts and the black lace underwear her husband had given her as a "wedding present". She smiled, thinking about his signature cheekiness. She always smiled when she thought about Louis. She couldn't help it.

She stepped out of their bedroom, into the hallway towards Lilly's room. Louis was notorious for going in there in the middle of the night just to hold her. He adored the now five month old with every fiber of his being, which only made Sophie love him even more. She stepped in her spacious room, pleased to see that she was right in her suspicions. Louis was sitting in the rocking chair, fast asleep with Lilly in his strong arms. His hair was everywhere, and yet he still looked like a model. He had Lilly against his chest, and they were both snoring softly. He was smiling in his sleep, and she felt happy tears pricking her eyes, threatening to spill over. She had so much love for these two, she thought her heart would surely burst.

She had to turn away from the sight, suddenly feeling sick to her stomach. She had done nothing to deserve such happiness. Actually, she had done everything the opposite of deserving her amazing life. Fate was an ironic son of a bitch. She stepped out of the room and softly padded down the stairs into the living room. She could feel the self pity threatening to erupt, deep down in her stomach. She always did her best to forget all of her mistakes, and yet situations like this always brought the memories back.

She was wide awake now, and flopped onto the expensive leather couch that Louis had begged for. The lights were off, but they always kept the windows open, so moonlight streaked in. She looked around the spacious room, trying to forget the bad memories by thinking of all the good memories in that living area. When they brought Lilly back from the hospital the first day and the two of them just sat staring at her, wordlessly, in awe of the life they had created together. The first week after they moved in, when they had no furniture and just stayed in there by the fire, talking about everything and never getting bored with the conversation. And of course, all the amazing love making they'd had, in every area of the room. This was a happy room. Yet she was still miserable, reflecting on all of her regrets and mistakes.

Right at that moment, Fate decided to be even more of an ironic son of a bitch, directing her attention to the photo album on the side table beside her. Against her better judgement, she picked it up and began to leaf through it.

She looked through their wedding photos, picures of her in the hospital after having Lilly, moving into their house together; the happy times. Then as she progressed through the book, she got to the older pictures. Where the bad times lay therein. She knew she should stop, but she just couldn't make herself do it.

Finally, she reached the picture she knew was waiting to taunt her, but she didn't care. Sophie wanted to wallow in her pity, and she didn't give a damn anymore.

It was from almost four years ago, maybe three and a half, she couldn't remember. It was a candid shot, a reporter had taken it without any of them knowing. The boys had just performed at the Grammy Awards, and had received a huge standing ovation, the applause close to blowing the roof off. It had surely been their best performance up to that point. They ran backstage so excitedly, hollering, whooping, high fiving, their usual antics. Sophie was already a couple with Louis at this point, they had been for almost half a year. The picture showed Louis picking up Sophie and spinning her around, smiling like an idiot at her face. She was smiling back, so happy for him and all he had achieved. Harry and Zayn were jumping on each other, and Niall was fist pumping the air. Everyone loved the picture, and it even made Time Magazine's Top 50 Best Pictures of the Year in 2012. Yet she loathed it. She wanted to burn every copy of that stupid picture she could find, because when she saw it, she didn't see the joy that everyone else did, including Louis. She saw despair. Because in the top left corner of that godforsaken picture, there was a mirror with Liam's reflection in it. He was looking at Louis spinning her around, pure joy on their faces, still in the early stages of their blossoming love. To everyone else, his reflection was just that: his reflection, nothing special. But she saw past that. Sophie saw the hurt, the pain, the sadness. She saw the crack in his heart as if it were plain as day. What made it so horrible though, was that in that picture, she was so happy, yet she was the one causing the pain so apparent to her on Liam's face.

She couldn't take it anymore, so she threw the photo album across the room, ignoring the fact that hot tears were streaming down her face. It landed with a thud on the carpet, and she curled up into a ball on the couch, wrapping her arms around her knees and ducking her face into Louis' tshirt.

As she tried to hide away from her regrets, her mistakes, all the pain she had inflicted on others...her mind took her back. Back to four years ago. Back to the day she met Louis.
