6. Liam's Flat

That same night, on the street outside Louis' flat:

Chloe shivered, zipping up her North Face halfway. She shoved her hands in her pockets and began walking towards Liam's flat just down the street from Louis'. She tried to ignore the fact that her toes were surely turning blue already since she was wearing Louis' black crocs without any socks on her feet.  Instead, she thought about how she was wearing that same jacket when she met Louis, which made her smile in spite of the cold. She speedwalked, trying to warm herself up but her teeth were already chattering by the time she reached Liam's house. She jumped up the two steps to his door and knocked hurriedly. She didn't hear any answer so she leaned into the door and said, "Liam, it's Soph, come open the door!"

Still no answer. She pressed her ear against the window beside the door and then jumped back because it was so cold. She tried again, this time not actually making contact with the cold glass.

She heard sad, soppy music coming from inside, and she noticed that light was coming from underneath the door. "Liam I know you're in there, open up the door!"

"Go away Soph." she could just barely make out his voice through the thick door, but it crushed her all the same. He sounded devastated, absolutely broken.

"Come on Liam, it's me, please?" she begged, but to no avail.

Damn it all to hell... she thought to herself, thinking she was seriously going to freeze to death. Snow was even starting to fall down on her. She knew he wasn't going to let her in, but she wasn't giving up that easily.

Sophie turned around and bounded down the two steps, pulling the hood on her jacket up to protect her from the now heavy falling snow. She jogged over to the side of Liam's house, seeing the glass doors that led into his living room. She exhaled in relief when she saw that the curtains weren't closed. She ran over to the glass doors and looked through, hating what she saw.

Liam was sitting on the couch, his head leaned back and his eyes closed. His hair was everywhere, and his face was still puffy from crying. He had purple bags under his eyes. His dissheveled appearance wasn't what concerned Sophie though.

On the coffee table in front of him were six glass bottles of beer, four shot glasses, and a bottle of whiskey. There was also a blunt with a roach on it and a small plastic baggie about half full of marijuana.

Sophie pounded her fists on the glass three times, making Liam jump in fright. "Liam James Payne, open up this damn door right now!"

Liam's eyes widened when he saw Sophie, but then he just shook his head and leaned back again. "Go away Soph, you don't wanna be around me right now."

"Yeah you're right, I don't wanna be around you, but if you don't let me in I'm going to fucking die of hypothermia!"

Liam sighed loudly and looked back up at Sophie through the glass doors. "Fine." he said with a roll of his eyes and he pushed himself up off the couch. He took the few shaky steps to get to the doors and unlocked it, letting her in.

She pushed it open quickly and ran into the room, leaving Liam to close it for her. She started to run upstairs to his room without saying anything.

"Oi! What are you doing?" he shouted angrily. He didn't even want her there, especially not right then, and she just barged in and ran upstairs. He marched over to the bottom of the stairs and shouted up at her again.

"Calm down Payne, I'm just borrowing some socks, my toes are about to fall off!" she yelled back at him, rounding the corner and hopping down the steps, like she was the cheeriest person in the world, which was really annoying to him. "Thanks, by the way" she said with a giggle since she hadn't even asked.

"Why are you here Sophie?" Liam asked rudely, wanting her to get out of his house. Her face fell and he immediately felt bad.

"I read your text to Louis." When Liam heard this, he threw his hands up and said, "Bloody hell" but Sophie just kept on going, "he was asleep, I was just checking the time and I saw the message. I was going to wake him up, but he's been so tired lately and he was finally getting some decent sleep..."

Liam had plopped back down on the couch, leaving Sophie standing awkwardly in the middle of the room. He saw her glance at the table, then back away from it. He was grateful that she hadn't commented on that situation yet. "Yeah, you shouldn't have woken him up, he needs to sleep..." he trailed off, thinking intently about something.

Sophie exhaled in relief, and walked over to the couch, plopping down next to him and pulling her feet up beside her.

Liam took a breath and said, "I guess you want me to talk about it, right?"

Sophie just shrugged nonchalantly and said, "Nah, you don't have to" which surprised him.

"Really?" he asked disbelievingly as he turned to face her. She nodded at him with a slight smile.

"Huh." he said simply, turning back to face the wall in front of him.

They were quiet for a few seconds, then he thought to himself, Damn she's good.

"We were on Skype" he began, "I was chattering away like always, when out of nowhere she blows up on me, saying that I've forgotten all about our relationship, and I've got other things on my mind, and-and..." he trailed off, deciding not to say something at the last second.

"And what?" Sophie asked carefully.

He turned to look at her and took a sharp breath at her beauty. She wasn't wearing any makeup, and her sandy blonde hair was down in natural waves. She just had on some of Louis' favorite red sweats and a tanktop under her jacket, and he could tell she wasn't wearing a bra, which was really hot. She was gorgeous, in such a natural way, not made up. She ducked her head down at him, bringing his gaze back to her face. "And what?" she asked him again.

His face paled in realization. Danielle had been right. He was in love with his best mate's girlfriend and he hadn't even realized it.
