37. It's All Gonna Work Out

Sophie stared at the pregnancy test in her hand. Positive? No, it couldn't be. She didn't want to have a baby! Obviously one day in the future she hoped to have a child, but not right now! She and Louis had only been married for ten months, after all. Now she was pregnant? No, there had to be some mistake.

But there was no mistake. Sophie was two weeks late, and this was the third pregnancy test she had taken. Sophie braced herself against the bathroom sink, staring at the little blue plus sign. She was going to be a mother. She was carrying another human being inside her, right then. She was going to give birth, raise a child, have responsibilities.

"Oh God" Sophie mumbled as bile rose up in her throat. She made it to the toilet just in time, kneeling down on the hard marble tile and wretching her breakfast into the bowl. She vomited continually for about three minutes, her body convulsing. There couldn't be much left in her stomach at this point.

Suddenly there was a small knock at the door. "Sophie? Sophie love, are you alright?" It was Louis. He was supposed to be at vocal rehearsals with the band until after lunchtime, but now he was home at around ten thirty or eleven in the morning. She hadn't even had time to think over what she was going to tell him, the reality hadn't even really hit her yet. They hadn't even discussed the idea of having kids yet, they were just finally getting used to being married.

Sophie wiped her mouth and barely managed to call out, "Yeah Lou, I'm f-fine" before beginning to gag again. She heard Louis sigh from the other side of the door, and he mumbled "Oh yeah, you sure sound fine". He opened the bathroom door and walked in.

"Go away L-Louis, I don't want you to s-see this" Sophie choked out as she continued to wretch. Louis just set his bag down in the doorway and kneeled down next to his wife on the tile. With one hand he bundled up her hair gently and held it back away from her face, and with the other he rubbed her back soothingly. Sophie continued to vomit, but she could still hear Louis singing an old Eric Clapton song softly,

I feel wonderful because I see the love light in your eyes And the wonder of it all is that you just don't realize how much I love you"

After a minute or two, Sophie finally expelled everything that was in her stomach. She continued to lay over the toilet bowl for a few seconds though, afraid it would start up again at any moment. Louis stopped singing, and continued to rub her back softly. Sophie chuckled sadly, too embarassed to look at Louis. She mumbled, "I bet you're glad you came home early today, huh?"

Louis chuckled as well and reached up to the counter where he grabbed a still damp washcloth. He gently turned Sophie around to face him and wiped her face tenderly. "Well I'm glad I did" he said seriously, but kindly. Sophie looked up at him from under her eyelashes and his breath caught in his throat. Even after throwing up, with her hair up in a messy bun, and face glistening with sweat, Sophie's eyes still managed to tug at his heart strings. It was his weakness, looking into those beautiful hazel depths. They weren't just hazel though; in bright light they were almost the color of honey, and in harsh light they looked like beautiful round almonds. He could always tell exactly what she was thinking when he looked in her eyes, and at that moment, he didn't like what he saw.

Louis cocked his head to the side and furrowed his brow in confusion. "What is it babe?" Sophie closed her eyes shut tightly, but two stray tears still managed to escape. Louis dropped the washcloth on the floor and reached up with both of his hands, grabbing Sophie's cheeks and gently pulled her face closer to his. "Hey, hey, no crying. I'm sure it's just a stomach bug, don't feel bad, I'm glad I came home." Sophie let out a single harsh laugh and Louis leaned back in surprise.

"Yeah, I guess you could call it a stomach bug..." she mumbled almsot inaudibly.

"What?" Louis asked incredulously.

Sophie opened her eyes and peered back at Louis. She had to tell him, and there was no better time than the present after all. She took in a deep breath and let it out slowly.

"Louis...I'm pregnant." she said quietly but bluntly, maintaining eye contact the whole time. Louis' hands instantly dropped from her face and he scooted back away from her on the tile. His face was in complete shock, his gorgeous blue eyes wide in shock.

"You're...you're what?" he asked in disbelief.

"I'm pregnant, Lou." she reiterated. Louis suddenly and without warning stood up and braced himself against the wall with one hand. Sophie looked up at him from the floor, trying to understand his reaction. Was he angry? Was he happy? Was he in shock? She stood up as well, but much slower since her legs felt like jelly. She had to lean against the sink counter to hold herself up.

"P-pregnant." Louis said simply. He was looking at the ground now, and Sophie could almost hear the gears turning in his head as he tried to comprehend the situation.

Sophie sighed and reached her hand over to pick up the pregnancy test off the other side of the creme colored counter. She took two wobbly steps and stood directly in front of Louis, just a magazine width away from him. He peered down at her looking absolutely terrified. "Yes Louis. Pregnant." With that, she held up the test in front of his face to show him the little blue plus sign. He looked at it for a few seconds, his expression unchanging, before Sophie dropped it on the ground. He looked back down at her again, breathing heavily. She reached a hand up and put it against his cheek. "Louis...we're having a baby."

Louis' breathing was uneven and his complexion had paled. But he was still silent. Why wasn't he saying anything?

"Louis?" Sophie said gently.

Suddenly Louis' face relaxed and he cocked his head to the side a little bit. He looked at her with curiosity now, and the color began returning to his cheeks. "A...baby?" he asked, looking down into her eyes.

Sophie smiled meekly, still pressing her hand against his cheek. "Yes. A baby."

"We're...we're having a baby." he said again, with a ghost of a smile playing at his lips. "Me and you, we're having a baby." Sophie nodded and Louis' face burst into his signature grin. "We're having a baby Sophie, we're having a baby!" With that, he wrapped his arms around Sophie's small frame and picked her up and spun her around. He started laughing joyfully, and Sophie couldn't help but join in.

Suddenly he stopped and set Sophie back down, looking down into her eyes with excitement written all over his face. "Oh my gosh Sophie...we're going to be parents. We're going to have a family. Is this for real?" he asked, and Sophie suddenly had a flashback.

There was a look on Louis' face that she had only seen once before, the day they first met in New York City. It was an expression that eminated the pure joy of not knowing, of being terrified and excited all at the same time, of not knowing exactly what the future might hold, but heading straight into it fearlessly all the same.

"Yes Louis," she said as tears streamed down her face, "this is for real."

With that, Louis' grin grew even bigger and he leaned down and kissed her hard. She kissed him back, feeling the tears mix inbetween their lips. He broke away after a few seconds, his eyes wide with enthusiasm. "Oh my gosh, I've got to call my mum and sisters. And the boys!" Sophie chuckled and he ran out of the bathroom excitedly.

Just as he rounded the corner though, Louis stopped and leaned his head back in to look at Sophie, who was wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. "Hey Soph?" he asked gingerly, and Sophie turned her head to look at him. He still had the biggest grin on his face. "This is a good thing babe. I'm happy. It's all gonna work out." Sophie gave him a meek smile in reply and nodded. With that, Louis winked at her, then disappeared down the stairs shouting "Hell yeah, I'm gonna be a father!"

Sophie leaned back against the bathroom wall and slid down to sit on her rear. She pulled her knees into her chest and let the tears fall as she thought over what Louis had just said.

"It's all gonna work out."

But how could everything possibly work out when she didn't even know who the father of her unborn child was?
